Scatters in the dark, curtains mysteriously shifting by themselves. Jennifer, sitting up in bed, squeezed the her blankets, holding them by her waist as her senses interpreted many kinds of movements from all sides of her room. She recalls clearly: She shut the windows and locked the door. A noise of a mouse crawling on the floor! Natural instinct jerked Jennifer's head in a spin, moonlight from the window laying silently on the dusty wooden floor is all it is.
A sigh of relief. Thank goodness. If her imagination was a person, she would feel like giving them one hot slap right now. Was it her imagination? No! It couldn't be! She reminded herself she is the top achiever at school! 'I'm not crazy!' The words exploded in big red in her head. 'Or am I?' She wonderded to herself.
Then something struck her nerves, a breath gushed out of her and shivers rushed through her body like insects on a rampage. Her heart almost skipped a beat as she stared blankly into the blackness, on the other side of her room. The sensations suddenly vanished. She turns her head in all directions and realizes there is nothing.
A sudden heaviness hit her. The moonlight had suddenly lost its beauty. Where is her appetite for good food? What is this grey feeling inside! The excitement for tomorrow's event is gone. All that is left is a swirl of depression floating calmly within - slowly eating away at anything positive. Why? How come? It was happiness one minute! Then a sudden collapse in the world of emotions. What snatched the happiness?
Jennifer's mind raced, as she slowly tucked herself back into bed. Her eyelids dropped and she fell into a slumber.
The wind shifted. Sounds of quiet giggles breezed through the room and interrupt the stillness of the silence. Jennifer snored, remaining completely unaware. There was a sudden shift! A wind swooped dust from the floor. The door leading out the room into the passage creaked calmly, as a strange force passed through it. The only response to that… a toss and a turn from Jennifer as she settled deeper into sleep.
The sun rays landed on Jennifer, extinguishing the darkness behind her eyelids. She awakened, washed up, got dressed for school and headed downstairs for breakfast. The aroma of fresh pancakes welcomed her warmly with the intoxicating scent of freshly brewed coffee. Jennifer greeted her parents and took her usual seat - opposite Dad. Dad let down the newspapers, greeted her and hid behind them again - he got caught up in meaningless news often.
Jennifer glanced at Mom, who was standing by the counter - her back facing them - as she diced the fruits with a knife. She noticed something strange. 'What is that strange black thing?!' The question rings in alert in Jennifer's head. She had read books about paranormal stuff and never believed a word. People do all kinds of things for money, right? Or perhaps boredom?! By the looks of it, that's not always the case! Jennifer gasped for air as she tried to hide shivers. She wonders if she's hallucinating.
The black shadow of a dwarf-goblin-like-creature, burning red eyes, ugly claws and big feet. Sitting on mom's shoulders, glanced left and right, then vanished! The sound of Mom dicing fruit snaps Jennifer back into reality. The aroma of pancakes found its way back to her senses again - just as the coffee. Jennifer shook her head. 'I should stopping smoking that garbage.' She yells in her mind. I almost made a fool of myself! What would have Mom and Dad thought!
Blurting out such crazy things! 'Paranormal stuff doesn't exist! Period!' The statement solidifies itself in her her head as she reached for the pancakes and butter.
Mom's attitude had changed now. She was happy a minute ago but now… a pure cold aura came from her. No! Drugs cause hallucinations! They should be avoided at all costs. Jennifer helped herself to a couple of pancakes and spread butter on them - the usual whenever mom makes pancakes.
She stood up, took a mug from the cupboard, sat back down and poured coffee from the steel jug. She stirred the the couple of teaspoons of sugar inside her coffee as she watched the milk inside change the coffee's colour.
She lifted the mug by the handle, for a sip. A natural glance at the newspapers dad's hiding behind… WHAT?! Jennifer pulled in a breath of air through her mouth that pulled a shriek out of her.
