(Mira Oka)
He was taking longer than I thought he would. What is he doing? Did he get himself lost? I shook my head. No, I don’t think he’s the type to do that. At least, that’s what I think. If I’m being honest with myself, I kind of pulled us into that worm battle thing.
Anita shivered. “What is he doing?”
Just then, we saw Ace sprinting at full speed toward us. “Run!”
I stood up, alarmed. “What happened?”
That’s when I saw about three guards coming in our direction.
One pointed at us and called out. “It’s Mira and the two trackers!”
Vera and Anita’s eyes widened while the other guard called out, “They betrayed the council. Capture them!”
We fled and I shot a gust of wind to blow them off and to buy us some time. It didn’t matter which direction we were going, we just ran.
Ace was way ahead of us, as I could hardly see him anymore. Anita and Vera on the other hand, were following me. What on earth happened? After a couple of minutes, I could finally see an exit with caution tape. I jumped over it as the others followed. That was a mistake. Several people turned.
“It’s Mira!”
“Criminal!”
“Call them!”
Several people were talking over another while others dialled the guards. In a flash, four more showed up and we ran. I pushed through people, jumped over prohibited signs and fences. Anita was breathing heavily, so we stopped at a bike rack. “Just take these!” I told them. We got on each bicycle and rode off. “If it was one of them,” Anita said between breaths. “I could easily knock them out.”
“It’s fine,” I quickly replied, peddling the bike harder. “Let’s just hurry.”
Vera gasped. “Taxi!”
I looked ahead. There was a taxi driving.
I turned back. Guards were still following us.
“Just keep pedalling!” I shouted. We peddled across the road while the taxi continued to drive. At that moment, the taxi didn’t stop. It crashed into the seven guards following us. Several people were distracted by this. They snapped photos, called the police, and posted them on social media. It was a great diversion, as the attention wasn’t on us anymore. We got off the bikes and stole food from outdoor shops before leaving the busy streets.
“Where are we going now?” Anita breathed.
“There’s this train station nearby,” I answered. “No one really uses it because the train doesn’t function as well as it used to.”
“You think Ace is there?” Vera asked.
“I saw him running in that direction.”

Once we made it there, we locked the doors. My heart was pounding, but at least we were safe for the time being.
“I can’t believe that taxi ran over them,” Anita said, wide eyed. “Was that our fault?”
“Mostly the taxi,” I replied. “But, at least it was a great diversion.”
“We’re screwed if they find us.” Vera said, looking out the window.
“It’s fine,” I said, trying to reassure them. “We’re okay. We just need to somehow calm ourselves.”
“My heart is pounding all erratically.” Anita commented.
“I’m sure there’s some water at the end of the hall,” I told her. “I broke the vending machine.”
“Sweet.” She walked away.
“Now what?” Vera asked with crossed arms.
“Let’s just rest,” I replied, running my fingers through my hair. “A lot of things happened. I just need a minute to process all of this.”
He nodded. “Yeah. I wonder what happened.”
I sat on the couch nearby, reflecting back to those moments. Several guards chased us. They got run over partly because of us and the taxi. Our plan has failed because Ace found something. I thought about when he ran to us. Telling us to run. There was an extreme panic expression written on his face. What did he see?
