I fear, that when I close my eyes, dark hands reach for me;

Footsteps unseen, unheard,

as a mystery slips into my bedroom at night.

I fear the dark.

I fear the shadows that, late at night, twist themselves beyond recognition

monsters new, everchanging, ever haunting.

I fear the dark, and the silence that comes with night,

but most of all,

I fear that when I open your bedroom door, just to check,

when I step over littered children's toys

when I reach to touch your sleeping body, in faded pink pyjamas,

I fear that you wake, and you turn to look at me,

and you're gone - darkness wears your clothes,

playing dress up - no-one but me knows

that you're missing and I cry for you but they don't listen,

they don't believe me when I say my child is gone

and darkness lives in her place.

"I'm afraid of the dark." I respond.

They laugh, "That's silly. There's nothing there."

I laugh too.

If only they knew

how wrong they are...

If only they knew

that behind my eyes
