'Lilly Cage'
She could hear her name echoing in her ear. The soft sun rays making their way through the window and on her face, she opened her eyes the whispers still in her ears. She stared at the ceiling for a while, the kettle in the kitchen could be heard, then the mixing and aroma of coffee. She sat up and thought for a moment, got out of bed her bare foot tiptoeing on the cold floor she went down the staircase frightened and peeked through the door of the kitchen 'no one' she heard the television in the main room with the news on. Terrified, she went in the kitchen and examined, the kettle was out just the steam remaining, she took a butcher knife as a weapon and headed for the living room still tiptoeing. The tv was still on, she looked around, no sign of forceful entry she turned back to check the hall way.
"Hi!" he said
"Jesus Christ Mike! what are you doing here?" Lilly exclaimed.
"Well...just checking in on my baby sister" he said with a smirk on his face.
"I'm not a baby, you don't need to check in on me. I am fine on my own!" Lilly forced out a smile.
"I can see that" Mike said while looking at the knife in her hand, "trying to kill me" he sipped the coffee from the mug.
It was not a question just a statement. She looked at the knife in her hand and said,
"Precautions Mike I live alone, anyone who lives alone would take precautions against an intruder" she said with a straight face while putting the knife on the table.
"Intruder?" he shrugged "I'm your brother".
"Mike, why don't you just have a cup of coffee and leave" she waved her hand at the front door through the hallway.
"I am already having one." he said bringing the mug up to his forehead in order to show her," But now that you're up let's have another cup, what do you say?" he attempted to initiate a conversation.
Lilly looked at Mike for a minute. He raised his eyebrows for an answer.
"I'll go wash my face" she said and went up stairs.
She went in her room and picked up her phone 'two unread messages'. She went through the messages they were from her mom, Mrs Cage, messaged her saying Mike would be there and that not to quarrel with him. 'What am i a baby' she said to herself. Lilly responded to the message with a thumbs up and the went to the bathroom. She came down, Mike was still in the kitchen.
"When did you come?" she asked him from the living room, picking up the empty cups from last nights party
"About 10 or 11." he came out the kitchen, " By the way, are you going bankrupt or something because there is literally nothing in your kitchen."
"Well...I have coffee" she said with a smile.
Mike laughed and shook his head. He grabbed his car keys,
"let's go get you some food." He took his jacket and went out the front door.
They were on the road to Walmart. Lilly looked out the cars window the green belt was going along the road, trees, plants were neatly trimmed. There were colossal buildings on the opposite sides of the dual road. She saw people rushing into their work buildings tensed, the sky was pleasant, sunny but not hot, cold but not freezing a perfect winter afternoon.
They picked up groceries and then stopped at a nearby café for the coffee they agreed to. Lilly brought the paper cup to her mouth and took a sip. She took a glanced at Mike.
“So why did you come here?” she asked while looking out the window.
“I told you, I came to see if you’re fine” he answered staring at her.
“I know that’s not the reason why you came here.” she said taking another sip.
“I need your help” he said in a serious voice.
Lilly looked at him. There was silence, she could hear her heart beating the wailing sounds of the ambulance echoed in her ears. She saw her father with a knife in his chest lying in the pool of his own blood. Lilly gasped for air as if someone was strangling her then looked at her hands, there was blood all over them. She recalled the murder witnessed by her ,when a man brutally pierced a knife through his chest multiple times to finish him. And she just stood in a corner watching her father struggling to breath.
“Lilly!” Mike shook her arms in order to bring her back, “you okay?”
“Yes, I’m fine.” she ran her fingers through her hair.
Mike slightly frowned, “I need your help.” he repeated.
Lilly eyeballed Mike for a while and asked, ”Who did you piss off this time?”
