Prompt: Write a piece on emotions.
Have you ever stood at the edge of a precipice looking down into the inky black below? Everyone experiences it differently, they say.
Perhaps, your toes are already curling into the dirt, body aching to claw your way back to safety and solid ground. Anything to step away from that damned plummet into the unknown. Doesn’t this familiar and flat earth feel better? Ah, look at you pressing your cheek into that dusty clay. Vertigo isn’t a good look.
Or maybe you’re the type that freezes. Eyes fixating on the dizzying drop, unable to move a muscle for fear of taking a wrong step. You can’t look away though. What if you miss something? What if there really is something down there? Should you flee? Should you gather your courage and clamber down the slope? Keep on musing. You don’t seem to be a taking a step in either direction.
Oh, but wait! Perchance, you are one of those. The daring ones who hear that siren‘s song ringing in their heads. L’Appel du Vide, it’s named, The Call of the Void. You simply can’t wait, can you? So sick of this boring landscape, you’re trembling to take flight like an agitated bird. No, you were never meant for solid ground. Desperate for the uncharted and new, you just might burst out of your skin. The risk of being caught by a jagged boulder is a small price to pay for the potential of a glittering lake below.
