On the third day of Borës, the twelfth month of the year four hundred and ninety-one31Please respect copyright.PENANApFKlGV7WFD
I have not returned to my motherland since war broke out. That was three years ago. I had lived in this country for eleven years and I should be feeling something that tells me that I am home. But it does not happen. I feel as foreign as my friends are. I may be able to speak their language. I may look like them. However, their values and mine are too different. Just the other day, when we landed at Roevonns, I saw both a boy and a girl being trained in the martial arts. They were much younger than Siegfried and had cuts and bruises all over their bodies. The moment they complained, they were struck with the cane that their father trained them with. When I asked the mayor why it was that no one had stepped in to help them, not even their mother, he gave two answers, but one was enough for me.31Please respect copyright.PENANASa0aw89OUC
The first was that it is considered disrespectful to meddle in another’s affairs, even more so if I meddled in familial affairs. If so, then why did my body ever move to save anyone other than myself in Bristel that night. Would I have helped Armin? The second was that every Danner child would be strictly disciplined and trained in the martial arts from the age of seven to the age of twelve. The boys would then go into the army for formal training. Boys who could not and most girls would study in a state school or take up the crafts of their parents. That would explain, in the villages we have passed by, why it was that the people seemed to be at peace even knowing that the Confederates would appear at their doorsteps any day. The mayor seemed surprised that I remember nearly nothing about my childhood except for where I lived, who I was, and why I was here. If it was not for my name, for my blood, nothing about me would be Danner.31Please respect copyright.PENANAeHSahHHndx
Although it does not trouble me as much as it did before, I still wish to know. I wish for someone to tell me who I was and not the things that I already know.31Please respect copyright.PENANAg2gQAUOU5e
