I can feel my wife's gaze on me, and instinctively turn my eyes away, scanning the room for a safer place to land my eyes. But I can't find any. And when I finally muster the courage to lift my eyes back to her, the earlier smile is gone. In its place there's a pensive look, as she meticulously turns her red-framed glasses between her fingers.
I remember buying them, when the doctors diagnosed her with early myopia due to working too many hours in front of a computer. How many years has it been now? I can't even remember.
"We'll find a way through this mess," she says. "And if the guys were right, it's just a matter of time, anyway."
