It all starts in a tavern...
While en route to the town of Byrnview to help rid them of a gloomstalker, a fiend who slips through shadows to hunt its prey, Anya Petrova stops at a travelers' inn, the Prancing Peacock. While she dines in silence, she overhears locals from the nearby village of Falspire lamenting "those who come in the night" and steal their children.
The next morning, Anya awakes to find the inn deserted, the doors locked from the inside, and trails of blood leading from the rooms to the kitchen and then down to the cellar. In the cellar, she finds no root vegetables, kegs of beer, or casks of wine. Instead, she finds a cell where several children and travelers are imprisoned. There, she learns of a cult worshiping a dark god who believe ritual sacrifice, eating human flesh, and drinking human blood together will allow them to transcend the limitations of the frailty of mortal bodies.
It seems Byrnview will have to wait...
