Chapter 1.
Kyra.
The world always felt like a game, something that I was simply a part of. It never felt real. Not to me. Everyone seemed distant no matter how close or far. Everyone’s faces became blurry when I thought of them. Names of friends became jumbled nonsense like lettered soup. Their voices that were once carved in stone faded into the background. But meeting her gaze, her eyes like the evergreen and mine like cocoa, everything around me became fleeting and I could only remember her.

I found out that she was a new student, a transferred student from Russia. We shared English and Science together so I found out that she was fluent in English with a hint of an accent. Her hair was shaggy and a deep color of brown that just barely reached her shoulders. Her facial expression was often hardened around people, and she didn't speak much unless it was required. I noticed she had a scar on her left cheekbone and it made me wonder what she got it from. If it was from something serious or something she didn’t remember. But it made me curious. She made me curious.

She was assigned to sit by me in science, and I felt a bit giddy on the inside. My heart ached tightly like it was being strangled by a rope, my hands moving my bag to my new seat next to her. My eyes met hers and she loomed over me, her gaze still hardened.

“Hello..” I managed to muster, my voice anticipating her next move. “I'm Kyra.”
