After Seth left, Nyx took her new cloak and hid it so it would not be ruined. She would never admit it out loud but she already loved it. After all, this was the first time she ever got a gift since she was taken. Her day felt calmer and almost surreal until night rolled by and it was back to the dark she went. But even tonight something was different, she had a new thought to drift to when she tried to escape her reality. A certain strange commoner, with kind eyes that was bringing all these ideas to her head.
The next day, he returned to rent the Green room again. This time he bought her a pastry. Nyx almost forgot how good baked goods tasted. They didn't talk outside of greetings. The silence was nice though, comfortable.
“How do you afford this?” Nyx asked, looking at the book in his hand.
She sat next to him on the floor, “A book?” He asked, confused.
“Not just that, you know, renting me for a few days back to back and bringing me gifts. No commoner could afford that.”
He didn't meet her gaze and chuckled nervously, “I saved up a lot.”
He’s lying and she knows it, but she’ll go along with it just for the moment.
“You must have worked very hard,” That can't be true, his hands are soft and smooth, not one sign of ever labouring a day in his life, “I’m sorry you are spending your savings on me.”
“Don't apologize, I want to. Nyx,” He called her.
“Yes Seth?” He loves the way she calls his name.
“If you don't mind me asking, how did you become a prostitute?” There it was, an opening and Nyx saw it.
Her smile dropped, “Let's see, have you ever heard of the kingdom, Kingsley?”
He nodded, “If I remember right it fell a few years ago.”
“It did, at the time I was working at the castle. When the castle fell, soldiers were taking castle workers and killing them. I ran, only to be captured and sold into this. And that's it.” She voiced a teary soft voice. A bit of a lie, a bit of the truth.
“I’m sorry.”
It wasn't his fault but Nyx could feel his guilt, it was something she knew she could use
“It’s ok, not like it's your fault. The world is simply cruel, some of us aren't as lucky as others.”
He stayed silent, “How about you? Tell me about yourself.”
“What do you want to know?” He smiled, probably at the found interest in him.
She thought, her eyes raked over the thin gold chain that was on his neck with a form of crest hanging from it. It looked pretty expensive, once again too much for a commoner to afford.
“Where did you get that chain? It's beautiful.”
He looked down at it, “It's my mom's, she gave it to be as an apology for missing my birthday.”
“Why did she miss it?”
“She had to go,” He paused as if he was thinking about what to say,” Help, my older brother.”
“Oh you have a brother?” Nyx asked. She is trying to confirm something.
“Yeah, two older brothers. And a few younger step siblings."
"Interesting."
"How about you? Do you have any siblings?" He asked her.
She smiled, "Nope, I was an only child." That was a lie.
'Hey big sis, can you read this to me tonight? I rather your voice than the maids.' That cute little voice whispered.
Nyx smiled to herself at the small memory, it was precious. A memory she hasn't visited in a very long time. Nyx found that something as innocent and sweet as those memories didn't deserve the seeing the grim reality of her life now. She was unworthy of that warmth.
"What's it like having siblings?" She questioned.
"Annoying honestly, especially older ones, who are better at you in everything." Sounds like he could relate.
"Is that so? I'm guessing parents focus more on them than the rest?"
"Yep." He tone dropped as if he was getting distant.
Nyx faked a sigh, "That's the cruel world we live in. A world where you have to fight for a parent's love and attention, a thing that should be the most priceless. If I was a mother, I would make all my children feel equally loved, no matter what."
"Have you ever thought of having kids?" He asked mindlessly looking at the ceiling.
"Ha, bringing a child into this life, that would be awful of me." She replied with humor in her voice.
"Before all this. When you were free."
She shook her head, "No, my mind was always focused on more distant things, like how many different colours are there to an apple."
Seth laughed, "That's an interesting thought."
Nyx giggled as well, she glanced at him. She softly stroked her finger along his chin and slowly pushed his face to look at her.
"But one thing I do know is, if I were a mother to a son as kind and amazing as you, I would never miss an opportunity to celebrate your birth into my life. I could all the love and hard-working in your eyes." She tenderly told him and lightly kissed his forehead.
"You deserve all the love a mother has to offer." She whispered the last part to him.
"You are something." Seth said lightly touching her hand still cradling his face.
"A good something I hope."
"Yeah."
She pulled her hand back onto her lap.
"But you want to know something?" She said almost daze like.
"What?"
"I've always dreamed of meeting someone, a guy, a really nice guy. He doesn't have to be rich or handsome. A guy who would take me from this awful place and carry me somewhere we both can call home. I know it's silly but I can't help but imagine it. Stupid aren't I? What chance does a whore like me have of someone accepting me?" She frowned and looked as if she wanted to cry.
"Don't say those things about yourself. You deserve so much, you don't deserve this type of life and I'm sorry you have to live like but I promise you, it's going to get better soon. Just give me time."
That last line caught Nyx by surprise, is her plan moving faster than she anticipated. Only one way to know.
"How do you know that?"
"Just trust me ok?" He offered her a smile but she could see the conflict in his eyes.
He wants to do it but he just needs a little persuasion. And Nyx is the right person for the job.10Please respect copyright.PENANA7dvaSnBSXT
