Despite this, it has been with us at every important time in our life. Through the highs and lows, the best times and worst times, the happiest moments of our lives to date, and the heart crushing memories best forgotten.
"Of course its been with us, you need to breathe to stay alive!" you say. Well yes, but it holds so much more meaning than simply getting oxygen in our blood.
Remember that time you held air at the bottom of your lungs, while waiting for your crush on the other line to respond to your painfully awkward confession. Then when you found out they felt the same way, you let out that sigh of relief, and with it, all the angst of having to spend months beating out all your hopes and one-sided emotions.
Remember walking out the door that winter morning, while the world was still in shades of grey as the sun hadn't even risen yet. Then you take that first breath in of suprisingly fresh winter air, and breathe out a warm mist, noticing how peaceful it actually is, but also thinking at the back of your head that it's way too cold.
Remember making eye contact with your friend across the room, and they had this ridiculously stupid face on, but you must have had that same ridiculously stupid face on as well, because you couldn't stop yourself from bursting out laughing till you couldn't breath. You thought you would suffocate and this would be how your story ends as tears started forming, but even that made it funnier.
After stopping to reflect on my own "breaths" these are some of the times where they were more than "keeping me alive". Hopefully this has stirred some memories for you and got you thinking about how our "breath" is so much more than just that.
It helps us express ourselves in ways that dull words can't.
It helps us notice things that would have otherwise been missed.
It shares moments with us, and helps us share moments with others.
So again, we take 30,000 breaths a day. How many of these breaths meant something to you?
