“Hello, Professor. I am Lucky.” The old man had a big smile and tears running down his face unashamed.
“You are indeed your parents’ child.” For the first time in years, I felt a flutter of heartache at the mention of my parents: it has been eight years since they died. “The strength and stubborn of your father, yet a perfect mix of your mother’s calculating and perceptive mind.” The only response I made to express my pleasant stupefy is a raised eyebrow. He chuckled in response before turning to the young woman who walked to him handing him his a package.
“The papers are approved. Congratulations sir, you are now Lucky’s legal guardian.” He wiped his face with the sleeve of his old ratty patched suit smiling as he takes the finished paperwork from the young female worker.187Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡxBvawd3BQK
“Thank you, Ma’am. How much longer will it be to get her passport? We have to leave within the hour to catch the boat to Germany.” The lady nods and walked away as if someone else was controlling her. The woman only stayed under my interested eyes for a moment before my eyes turned cold as I bore into Professor.
“You actually have the ability to abuse your gift.” Professor smiles and tells me to shush as the lady walks back with a blank passport. Professor smirks at the woman as he takes the passport and pulls out the picture of me the agency took just hours earlier. He with swift precision places the picture in the passport book where the picture should be. With a swipe of his hand over the page and quick scribbles in the book a bit, he handed it to me as he marches to the front doors. I open the small book to see the necessary information filled out and my picture inside as if printed on the paper. My usual lined mouth, pinch upward a bit as if to smile: it was a weird sensation because I haven’t even remotely had an urge to smile since my parents died.
“Hurry along Lucky, you will have plenty of free time to admire my work when we’re at sea,” Professor hollered holding the front door open for me. My mouth moved upwards, even more, transforming into a real smile as I took long strides to walk out the door to join Professor outside. He is a very interesting character and if I play my cards right with him, then he can be very useful in avenging my parents. As my mother use to say “Any hand can hide a joker in the euchre game of life”.ns22.214.171.124da2
