Chapter One.366Please respect copyright.PENANAgOfBMkbHTc
I had the dream again.366Please respect copyright.PENANA5EQWro8TuM
Silently, I stood under the hooded awning of my overly crowed high school, my head leant up against one of the hard steel poles that held it up. Other students had stopped to stare outside as well, their lively voices drifting over to me in bits and pieces, but I could hardly hear anyone over the hard dribbling patter of rain.
The brutal, and near merciless storm had been raging on for hours on ends, raising true hell and high water. Though is was thearputic to the thoughts that constantly ran through my head, it soon became a nuisance when I realized that I couldn't make it out into the parking lot without being drenched. Little pricks of irritation flowed through me then.
I was already exhausted from not getting any sleep last night, wishing that I could just go home and fall asleep, death dream or not. The dreams had become entirely more frequent, going from once every month to twice each week, leaving me in heap on the hardwood floors breathing heavily, the feeling of adrenaline still trickling through my veins as confusion mixed with the feeling of urgency, putting me in utter turmoil. The dreams first started when I was around ten, the scene of dead people in a burning forest taking the meaning of horror to a whole new level.
Still, nearly eight years later, I had entirely no idea what it meant.
When I first told Marci, my adoptive mother about it, she simply told me it was just a silly nightmare, and that all kids got them, sometime adults too. She took me into her arms and sung me to sleep that night, I could still almost feel the warmth that emitted from her, giving me peace and a sound mind.
That was before she started drinking. I never actually got a chance to ask her again.
Biting my lips, I shook myself out of my reverie and blinked back into reality, as gloomy and as sad as it was.
"It's raining cats and dogs out there!" I heard someone yell.
Twisting my head slightly, I saw an old woman wearing a red sports jacket, her gray eyes squinting as she fought to the front of the crowd, car keys in hand. I assume she's someone grandmother picking them up from school, because I didn't remember her working here.
Though, I smiled a little because she really wasn't exaggerating.
In the city of New York we had seen some pretty intense thunderstorms, but honestly, this was just bordering on ridiculous.366Please respect copyright.PENANAdmjYPHlPq6
Outside into what could only be known as New York City traffic, you could just barely make out the outlines of other cars, the rain was coming down so heavy and thick as the wind whipped hard and fast making it difficult to drive. Dark clouds in the sky blocked out the sun, causing dark shadows to block what was supposed to be midday. Thunder boomed outside and the lights in the school flickered, causing a few moments of panic and a few shouts around the school.
However it wasn't only us who suffered through the monstrous storms, countries all over the world had been receiving far more worse and deadly. Just two days ago some city in New Mexico got wiped out by this huge tsunami, killing over one thousand, and injuring two hundred. Cleary they got they raw end of the stick compared to our little rain showers that at worse, got someone's hair wet. It was becoming more than obvious that something was happening, something big. Some believed the storms meant the end of days, and apocalypse preppies roamed the streets handing out preparation kits and warning signs. Others thought it to be Global Warming and they held simple protests, some peaceful, others not.
Me? I just thought Mother Nature was on her period, I tended to be a realist in these type of situations.
Suddenly car horns began blare, and the sound of a train's horn tooting resounded over the hard pitter-patter of the rain.
Groans rang throughout the room as it became obvious that the storm wasn't letting up anytime soon, mine being one of the loudest.
"Well I ain't waiting any longer for this rain to stop, if mother earth wants to make it rain, she can make it rain. I ain't afraid to get a little wet."
My head snaps to the side and I saw the old woman, from earlier now at the front standing beside me, determination set in her frail body.
Then, before anyone could react, the woman dashes outside into the parking lot, her jacket over her head as she got further and further away until the fog and sheets of rain swallowed her up whole.
There was a few beats as I waited for something to happen, when I realized she was right. Honestly, what was a little rain going to hurt?
Decision made, I fished my keys out of my pocket and dashed out into the parking lot myself, away from the safety that the high school roof. Rain and hail pelted down on me from above, wasting no time in drenching me from head to toe. Cursing the liquid wastes of Mother Earth, I ignored the suspicious squishing sounds my shoes were making and trudged on.
I was probably only a few feet away from the car when it happened, just a few spaces away from safety. Then everything ceased.
The rain. The wind. The hail. Everything.
It just stopped.
And all at once the world was silent. The world so quiet and peaceful it was almost scary.
Then I looked up at the sky, when something bright flashed and a lustrous blue arc of brilliant light zagged down from the sky and slammed into my chest.
I stumbled backwards, tripping on my own two feet until I fell completely, disoriented by the excruciating and unbearable pain. A swell of pure energy surged inside of me and I felt my back bow off the ground as I let out an ear piercing scream. Pain radiated from my chest and back, as my heaving breaths grew slower and heavier.
Slowly, I slipped into an unconscious state, just barely aware of the crowd forming around me, their animated voices getting farther and farther away until, blessed silence.
