and then he cut his hair just for her.
"Hey, bud, what can I do for you?" A man said as he walked up to the ever exhausted Jean, who was in his sweat-soaked sleeping attire.
"I would like the white boy haircut," panted Jean as he gestured to his mop of hair. "The one that is short on the sides with a big ramp-looking thing on the front. I am hoping you understand me." Jean thought about his next words and took a deep breath. "And also maybe cut a few the beard? But not too short, I do not want to look so different."
The barber led him to a recliner chair with a sink on top. He started a conversation with Jean as he washed his hair. "You've got a full head of hair that people would kill for, why would you want to cut it?"
Jean chuckled at the man. "It is for a girl," he said as his eyes flitted towards the ceiling. He couldn't help but smile."Leigh is her name and I will be seeing her in the few hours." Jean paused. "But she does not know it."
"Oh?"
"I am hoping it will surprise," he said sheepishly. "She wants to go meet me in my country, Maravier...but the thing is, she hates the plane flights."
"Maravier?" The man echoed. "Explains your accent. But isn't that — uh..."
"Yes — across the world. That is why I am here. I came in the few days ago just so I can sit beside her in the plane."
Jean stood up and followed the man — whose name he later learned was Benny — to another seat for his haircut.
Jean talked about Leigh like a preacher about the Word of God. He told Benny about how they met — Jean buying some art supplies from Leigh through the internet — and the plans for their dates in Maravier.
Once Benny was done with Jean, they shook hands. "It was refreshing to listen to you talk about this girl... but I didn't catch your name."
"Jean." Jean played with his newly styled hair for a few moments as he looked into the mirror in front of him. In one of their conversations, Leigh had talked about how her dream guy looked like. And now, Jean was as close as he could get to fitting that mold. "Thank you for listening and for this. It is amazing. You are amazing."
Benny chuckled. "Good luck with Leigh, Jean."
