The nighttime air was crisp and resolved as it hung over the Kalosian metropolis, Lumiose City. Folding chairs were lined up in near rows and columns in front of a stage. The gleaming beacon that was Prism Tower loomed over the graduating class of the Central Kalosian Academy. The ceremony began as Chancellor McAdams stepped up to the podium positioned perfectly atop the wooden stage.copyright protection4PENANAEJxfDnd7jj

“Good evening Class of 2018; it has truly been a pleasure…,” Chancellor McAdams spoke.copyright protection4PENANAR3Qxtp00fa

In the audience of soon-to-be former students, Autumn Locke feigned falling asleep, leaning onto the shoulder of her classmate beside her.copyright protection4PENANA2jqyjx4exo

“Enough patting yourself on the back, dude” she grumbled.copyright protection4PENANAhb8OrLcFTw

Autumn was a pretty young woman who stood about five feet, six inches tall and had a curvaceous figure. Her hair was bobbed, shoulder-length, and black as a Murkrow feather with red highlights dashed throughout. Her Meowth-like eyes were a gorgeous deep green that she accentuated with a bit too much dark makeup. Her crimson red lips remained in a straight line as she stared at the classmate sitting next to her.copyright protection4PENANAYKzPi3ei3u

Jackson “Jax” Key simply kept his attention forward, his milky blue eyes staring unseeingly at the stage ahead of him and the rest of his fellow classmates. His head was shaved and he was on the skinny side, but his physical appearance did not bother him one bit. He could not see it even if he wished to.copyright protection4PENANAt5OUE7rJmY

“Let the man congratulate himself. He has done an acceptable job as our chancellor,” Jackson responded, clicking the end of his cane against the ground three times.copyright protection4PENANA8DagsC2EhV

His eyes moved slightly toward Autumn as she rolled her eyes. Jackson smirked and gently tapped his cane against Autumn’s knee.copyright protection4PENANAafGK4ZNjiR

“Now, now,” he told her with a mildly scolding tone, “Rolling your eyes is such an ugly thing to do.”copyright protection4PENANAOMWCGBK7k6

“Bite me, Zubat-Man,” Autumn growled, punching Jackson on his forearm.copyright protection4PENANA6sKgJcSMRa

Jackson developed a rare disorder when he was a young child and it eventually deteriorated his vision completely by the time he was five-years old. For the next thirteen years, he had gone through therapy session after therapy session until he could manage his way through life with little to no assistance. The greatest of these therapies was the Riolu he had assigned to his person when he was fifteen. The past three years had him developing a new technique to help him “see” in a way that made life a little easier. He could view outlines of a person’s aura by tapping his cane against the ground. This allowed him to “see” Autumn rolling her eyes at him.copyright protection4PENANAH2poMunAOF

Riolu was wearing his guide Pokémon vest and sat up in the bleachers surrounding the students in between Jackson’s mother and father. He eyed his human with determined intent as well as keeping an eye on his surroundings. Even as a Pokémon, Riolu knew large crowds were dangerous nowadays. He was a bit perturbed at being kept away from Jackson, but the latter wished to be on his own for his graduation.copyright protection4PENANArCroe7ZZfk

“Now we can begin by announcing the names of our graduating students!” Chancellor McAdams announced.copyright protection4PENANA5lNPCw2viT

“Finally,” Autumn groaned, throwing her head back in impatience.copyright protection4PENANAF0V5oIALio

Chancellor McAdams went through the list of graduating students row-by-row before finally reaching Autumn and Jackson’s in the center of the group of students. As their row approached the stage, Autumn kept an eye on Jackson as he gently swished his cane from left to right in front of his path.copyright protection4PENANArK1T8f07eg

“Jackson Key!” Chancellor McAdams announced.copyright protection4PENANArkCeaeLcK4

Applause erupted from the surrounding audience. An assistant to the chancellor offered to help Jackson up the steps, but he clicked his cane against the handrail to give himself a quick glance at the layout.copyright protection4PENANA5q41wtJ6f2

“I can do it myself, but thank you,” Jackson told the aid, hoisting his cane onto his shoulder, and easily traversing the steps to the stage.copyright protection4PENANAvGMwzUMA21

He lowered his cane once more as soon as he finished climbing the steps onto the stage. He tapped it twice against the stage and received an aura outline of it as well as Chancellor McAdams ahead of him. Jackson approached and took his diploma while shaking the chancellor’s hand.copyright protection4PENANARultJvIuHs

“Thank you,” Jackson told Chancellor McAdams before making his leave toward the ramp leading down from the stage.copyright protection4PENANAzNTEOp7yvn

“Autumn Locke!” Chancellor McAdams announced.copyright protection4PENANAB04oxEjjfl

Jackson stopped immediately, turned toward the stage, and cupped his hands around his mouth.copyright protection4PENANAk6PGzzbi4T

“Woo! Go Autumn!” he shouted as loudly as he could.copyright protection4PENANAKDHEiw3q5y

Autumn stared at Jackson as he saluted her and she took her diploma while begrudgingly shaking Chancellor McAdams’s hand. She left the stage and the chancellor continued with the rest of their row.copyright protection4PENANANGzR46wnpL

Jackson and Autumn returned to their seats where the latter immediately swiveled on her seat and draped her legs onto Jackson’s lap.copyright protection4PENANAJKRzqr8CJc

“Well… we did it,” she muttered under her breath as if she was unsure what it all meant.copyright protection4PENANAvuQc98JcyO

Jackson noted her uncertainty and offered a calm smile in response. While Jackson was always enamored with the idea of becoming a Pokémon Trainer; Autumn had no clue what she wanted to do with her life after the academy. To her, Jackson was an anchor that kept her from drifting away toward a variety of directions that could mean success or failure. Now he was leaving her to realize his dream and Autumn was about to be more alone than she’s ever felt before.copyright protection4PENANALlukdzrJXQ

After the ceremony finally ended, Jackson found a spot beneath the statue of CKA’s mascot; Paul the Pyroar, and was joined by Autumn as the duo waited for their respective families to join them from the cascading surge of families leaving the bleachers. Autumn immediately unzipped her black graduation gown. Underneath the gown, Autumn was wearing a black off-shoulder, short-sleeved shirt with a dark gray cloud-like print on it that revealed a bit of cleavage, black faux-leather leggings, and black platform ankle boots covered in silver spikes.copyright protection4PENANAvGBnf1OoDy

Riolu, on the other hand, was not keen to wait for the humans to move out of his way and took to running across the tops of their heads much to the confusion and/or irritation of each man, woman, and child he did this to. The Fighting-type Pokémon reached the Pyroar statue.copyright protection4PENANAA93rmcz5p7

“Hello Riolu,” Jackson greeted the Pokémon before he could announce his presence.copyright protection4PENANATatouGXWqU

Autumn was shocked that Jackson had noticed Riolu’s approach before the Pokémon could even speak.copyright protection4PENANAMVBojRp8f2

“H-How…?” she questioned.copyright protection4PENANAHQbKhxXQDn

“I heard him coming. He’s gotten sloppy,” Jackson taunted with a cocky grin.copyright protection4PENANAYwxrU28SYz

Riolu narrowed his eyes and quickly dashed forward to knee Jackson in the stomach. The latter groaned in pain and doubled over while the Fighting-type landed gracefully with satisfaction etched on his face.copyright protection4PENANANLvo9OfyWv

“You two are so weird,” Autumn commented.copyright protection4PENANABDlNoDlmuY

Her green eyes then locked onto a pair descending from the bleachers. She tensed up when the equally green eyes of her mother, Cassandra locked onto her as well. As Jackson rubbed his stomach, he tapped his cane against the ground to see where Riolu was so he could retaliate, but he was distracted by the advancing outline of Cassandra Locke.copyright protection4PENANAJsvgUqi3ih

Autumn and her mother had a strained relationship at best and a downright spiteful one at worst. Cassandra held her daughter high standards, but Autumn would rather set those standards on fire and do the exact opposite of what her mother wanted her to do.copyright protection4PENANAC527tcVJKS

“I cannot believe you did not offer to help Jackson up those steps, Brittany,” Cassandra scolded her daughter.copyright protection4PENANAemvAaTdvfH

Jackson stepped a couple paces to the side as Autumn narrowed her blazing green eyes toward her mother.copyright protection4PENANAuY9Zf4py7I

“One, my name is Autumn. Two, Jackson is perfectly capable of walking up three steps,” Autumn responded.copyright protection4PENANAPJNSRh4M1P

“According to your birth certificate…,” Cassandra argued.copyright protection4PENANAEfbaPl32Rj

“A piece of paper I had no consent to does not dictate how I wanna live my life,” Autumn countered.copyright protection4PENANAJlhTlxXK54

Jackson tapped his cane against the ground to give himself a better look at his surroundings. He could feel the growing tension between mother and daughter.copyright protection4PENANAtVOgNFyRsz

“Does not change the fact you refused to assist your helpless, blind…,” Cassandra continued.copyright protection4PENANAG7PShFekI5

Riolu suddenly lunged at Cassandra, but Jackson quickly hooked the Fighting-type with the top of his cane, pulling him back.copyright protection4PENANAErrWlMtjxy

“My apologies Mrs. Locke, but Riolu does not enjoy hearing anyone call me helpless,” Jackson explained the Pokémon’s actions as he firmly tapped his cane against the ground, “I do agree with Riolu; however, I am not helpless.”copyright protection4PENANAo0tchhSP8k

“Of course you are not helpless, Jackson,” Cassandra started to backpedal her statement, “But…”copyright protection4PENANApPrfIJUW4C

Autumn is a wonderful friend and helps me when I request her for help. Every time,” Jackson added.copyright protection4PENANA2I4tEpf7JM

Riolu’s ears perked up and he turned his attention to Jackson’s parents descending from the bleachers. The sudden scent of hard liquor filled Jackson’s nose and he tapped his cane on the ground to get an outline of Autumn’s father, Richard discreetly gulping some alcohol from a flask kept in the inner pocket of his coat.copyright protection4PENANAG7Mak3rdTA

“Evening Cassandra,” Jackson’s mother greeted Autumn’s as she and her husband joined the group.copyright protection4PENANAxjqZy8Is5M

“E-Evening… Elizabeth,” Cassandra responded.copyright protection4PENANA57v9A9zPhi

“Our children sure are wonderful,” Elizabeth continued, “I want you to know how appreciative I am of your daughter and everything she has done to help my son over all these years.”copyright protection4PENANACXqo8KsAXm

Cassandra nodded and chose to ignore the prideful grin on Autumn’s face.copyright protection4PENANAbvFBveKeHP

“Autumn, let’s go,” Cassandra ordered.copyright protection4PENANA1MWwVwFvmX

“Actually, I was thinking of hanging out a bit with Jackson and his parents. If that is okay with Mr. and Mrs. Key, of course,” Autumn responded.copyright protection4PENANANYUen3ZQDX

“I would gladly have you with us, Autumn. If your mother is okay with you being with your best friend, of course,” Elizabeth responded, eying Cassandra for her response.copyright protection4PENANAcPsSqY6acN

Cassandra simply nodded and stormed off in a huff with Richard close behind.copyright protection4PENANA0dAWKvtq0Q

“Mr. Locke. Drinking alcohol in public on Centrico Plaza is strictly prohibited,” Jackson suddenly proclaimed before Richard could get too far.copyright protection4PENANAnOOi3cl22Z

Richard paused and stared at Jackson in confusion over how he knew he had a flask on him as the latter simply smiled and tapped his cane against the ground. Jackson took great pride in “seeing” the confused look on Richard’s face before he scurried away.copyright protection4PENANAZfOs8fqfpD

“Mother, you can be so spiteful,” Jackson pointed out, turning toward his parents and Autumn.copyright protection4PENANA3pRDmB9P2a

“I’m only spiteful toward spiteful people, sweetie. No offense, Autumn,” Elizabeth responded.copyright protection4PENANAFpZuH2H24K

“Why’d I be offended? My mom’s a bitch,” Autumn questioned, “So where’re we eating at, Curtis?”copyright protection4PENANA24ZQw86Xnv

She stared at Jackson’s father for an answer and the latter thought about it for a moment.copyright protection4PENANABrVs4i4e86

“Why don’t we head back to Vaniville so we aren’t charged three times as much for half the food?” he suggested.copyright protection4PENANAoOvnicp0fu

“I like that idea,” Jackson commented.copyright protection4PENANAKiyK95Sf2g

“Me too,” Autumn agreed.copyright protection4PENANALDIH6MZb07

Elizabeth and Curtis led Jackson and Autumn to where they parked and left Lumiose City for a more affordable area to eat at.copyright protection4PENANAhpVNMe0cef
