I used to love to dance.
Of course I was never any good, but I loved it anyway.
I loved the beat of the music and my body just.....reacting.
It was always a nice escape.
I sighed rubbing my hands over my goosebump filled arms.
I can't do that anymore.
Not ever since it happened.
Two years.
It's been two years.
I'm only fourteen.
Fourteen.
That's to young.
Way to young to be dealing with all of this.
I've gotten used to it though.
Adapted.
That's what you have to do to survive here.
If not your dead.
I closed my eyes listening to the wind howl softly.
The days like these I cherish.
Yes they may bring back some memories.
Good and bad.
But like dancing it's a nice escape.

" Hey Kayla! Did you find anything?"
I narrowed my eyes at the boy in front of me. " Michael your on thin ice. I said call me Kay not Kayla."
He just rolled his hazel eyes at me blowing me a raspberry. " Yeah yeah whatever. Anyways did you find anything?"
I sighed and threw my worn and faded purple back pack on the floor and sat on one of the cloth covered furniture that lay scattered in the abandoned house we had been staying in for the past few months.
Note to self we may need to pack up and move soon. We've been here to long.
" No. I couldn't find a damn thing in that wasteland."
I saw Michael's face fall a little, but he quickly gained his smile. " It's cool. We'll just eat some of that leftover jerky and couple of slices of bread."
I frowned. " How can you be so happy? Were pretty much starving and living in a dust-filled crappy piece of shit house, and you still manage to smile. How is that?"
He gave me a coy smirk. " It's just because your a pessimist."
I kicked his leg. " Shut up you jerk."
He whimpered and rubbed his leg. " Pessimist."
I raised my boot clad foot threteningly. " Don't cross me or this foot will end up your ass."
" Kay! Are you threatening Michael again?! I thought we talked about this?"
I swiveled to look at my best friend April. She had a frown on her plump pink lips and had her hip jerked a little to the side her hand resting on it.
I raised an eyebrow. " Now you know I would never threaten poor little Mikey. I was just teaching him a very valuable lesson on not calling me Kayla. Or a pessimist."
She rolled her eyes. " One I know you only call everyone by a nickname when your lying, two I heard Michael scream in pain, and three I heard you literally just threaten him and let me quote "Don't cross me or this foot will end up your ass." am I correct?"
Michael stuck his tongue out at me as I rolled my eyes and silently pouted.
" So what if I threatened him? He deserved it!" I said.
" Oh boy." April mumbled.
" Guys what's all the commotion? I'm trying to sleep!"
Zoey came down next clad in a pair of sweatpants and a shirt rubbing her eyes tiredly.
I smiled. " Nothing. Just go back to sleep Zoe."
She quickly stopped rubbing her eyes and glared at me. " Your lying."
I cursed silently under my breath as April and Michael laughed quietly.
I heard Zoey chuckle too. " Whatever you can tell me later. I'm heading back to bed. See you later jerks."
Zoey ran back up the creaky wooden steps, her curly brown hair swaying. We knew she had went back to sleep the moment she slammed the door shut and her footsteps had ceased to be heard.
Silence accommodated the small living room.
I sighed again and leaned back onto the couch. " We should probably leave here soon."
Michael looked at me. " Why? We've been fine for a couple of months now and in that time span only a few of the infected ever made it in here. Even then we fought them off."
" That's not the point! We've been here for too long. There intelligent. Eventually there going to put together that we live here and are going to come after us. I don't know why they haven't figured it out yet, but there going to. I can just feel it." I said my eyes letting them know that they probably shouldn't say no.
April sighed and flopped onto the arm of the couch Michael was sitting on and that I was across from.
" Look Kay your probably right. But they haven't figured it out yet so I think we can wait awhile. Stop being so paranoid for a second and just enjoy that were together and still alive."
I shook my head and was about to speak until Michael interrupted me.
" April's right. They haven't figured it out yet so why not enjoy the small time of relaxation we have?"
I shook my head again my short crop of hair smacking me in the face. " There to smart. And anyways we've been wasting time. We could have found the cure already, but were just sitting here. Just sitting here. We could be figuring out a way to stop this!"
Michael ran a hand through his curly brown locks and April played with the hem of her faded white "Cute" crop top. Then April looked at me with broken eyes.666Please respect copyright.PENANAV20WImi9Qy
" Kay look I didn't want to say this because I knew you would get mad, but there is no cure. We've been following nothing but a lie. If there was a cure don't you think we would have found it by now?! There is no fucking cure! There never was!"
I threw my bag down on the floor and glared at her. " I'm going out for a walk."
"Kay-"
I cut Michael off. " Just leave me alone. Don't expect me back for a while."
Then I left.
