A deep blue blanket, sprinkled with glitter

Covers us from above.

The ground below, an itchy green litter,

Crawls with the ants we pretend do not exist.

A large, fluffy patch hides the moon,

Wind dances through the trees to our left, like large leafy maracas.

Your hand tightens on my chest, mine rests in your hair

I can feel ants tiptoeing along my leg

But to move, I do not dare.

A burning bite is a risk worth taking,

In reward for lying with you.

I’d risk a hundred more.

Even if I had wanted to go,

I can’t.

You stole something dear to me and so,

Tethered with chains in your blue winter eyes,

Barricaded with an electric fence,

It sits far from my reach.

A tiny pinch, a grimace more,

Up we sit and brush them off.

We have so much to answer for.

I may have stolen your father’s car,

But you, my dear, have stolen bolder.

You commandeered my heart.

Sirens sing us to sleep at night,

The dogs hunt us by day,

But with you by my side in this moonlight,

I know we should not despair.

Just keep my heart locked tight in your eyes,

And you’ll have nothing to fear.
