How many different walks of life

Has this communal kitchen seen?

It's blue tiled floor and yellow walls

Have borne the many hopes and dreams

Of countless weary travellers

Taking rest on their journey.

So many different, unique people,

So many different faces.

With lives and tales of their own

From so many times and places.

And none of us would ever have met

If it weren't for this communal kitchen.

A pink haired girl just passing through,

With a dog as good as gold.

A lawyer, always tired and smoking,

Eyes of emerald, deep and cold.

A group of student doctors

Chatting death across the hall.

A family home from Israel

After twenty years there painting.

A graduate archaeologist

Working part time here in waiting.

And a dozen other passing faces

Flashing past too fast to recall.

A neat and narrow slice of life,

A spectrum of possibility.

Spread out through one communal kitchen,

All linked in amiability.

A checkpoint in our journeys,

All cameos in another's story.
