Mateo and Maya don't really know each other. All that they know about one another is that both of their best friends, Koa and Sienna had a badsituationship. So when Sienna was screaming at Koa of course their best friends were there— Mateo for Koa, Maya for Sienna— So with Sienna hating Koa after that, it was only girl code for Maya to hate Mateo. But when Maya went to a party and played an 'innocent' game of SMIH (seven minutes in heaven) and saw Mateo, of course she still initially hated him, but in the closet all crammed and heated, it was hard to withstand those eyes.
