“I’m board” I said sitting on the couch switching channels on the TV
“Lets go barebacking ya?” Travis said all wide eyed and excited
“Sure” I responded, turning the TV off and headed out back with my best friend
Travis lived right across the street from me. His parents were rich and built a house on a field that once was my view from our front yard. He had an older brother that hung out with my brother after the house was built. We met 3 years ago from our brothers one day arguing over some chick. They were both popular in school at the time. My brother was football player and his was into BMX riding. Girls would flock to both of them constantly all the time. They had a good friendship up untill a girl got in the way and then they just stopped talking to eachother. Shortly after that they both moved out of the house and that left travis and I the only two kids are age on the block. So we started to hang out alot after school.
I lived in a big house that had a farm in the back. I had lots of animals I took care of, but the most precious animal was what I had gotten on my 16th birthday. Letty was a bloodstock mare that was supposed to be for racing but wasn’t good enough and sold for cheap. I loved that horse like it was my child. She was the first to be fed and the last to groom and talk to whenever I had stressful days. I usually had alot of stressful days. My parents were alcoholics and my school life was hell. I didn’t like hanging out with girls much cause I was raised more by my brother. I turned out hating dresses, makeup, and when it came to boys, they were just more fun to hang out with, then to lust over. So I never had any girls as friends because they were to intimidated by my tomboyish ways.
My parents were rarley around except a couple days a week. My mom was an RN that worked long hours and my dad was a roofer. He was home by the evening, but would start to drink soon as he got home, so me and my little sister would do are own thing. She and I didn’t get along much either. We were five years apart and she was more of a girly girl. Lets just say she was mommies girl and I was more of a daddys girl. So travis was the closest person I had in my life. He had friends at school that became my friends too, but after school it was just me and him all the time. He was good looking and would have girlfriends here and there, but hated that I was in his life most of the time, so they didn’t realy last that long. As for me I didn’t realy like the whole relationship scene, but would have my share of boy toys here and there.
“So where you want to go” I said as I was climbing the fence to get on Letty
“Lets go to the swing” Travis said while holding Letty in place for me while I jumped on
“Ok”
Travis climbed the fence and straddled himself behind me and we took off
Chapter 2
The swing was a nice place to hang out and have fun. It was a big rope that hung from an oak tree out in the middle of a field. We never knew who put the swing there in the first place or who owned the land. It was there since I moved here 8 years ago and it never changed, exept the bottom of it sometimes would have a piece of wood or plasitic tubbing so you could hold on to it. Those would break off sometimes and other kids around the nieghbor hood would fix it. The tree was real easy to climb and tall enough to get a rush from dropping down to swing back and forth. The rope had to be tied to the tree to reach it, but it mostly wasn’t, so going with someone was better so one could swing it back to another that was up in the tree.
We got to the tree with Letty and let her eat the grass while we hung out. When we got there the rope was dangling from the tree. Travis and I looked at eachother and rolled our eyes. It wasn’t tied to the tree for the hundreth time. There would be a couple times it would be, but mostly kids would come out alone and wouldn’t be able to fetch it to put it back. Travis grabbed a tree limb and waited for me to climb the tree to catch it as he swung it back and forth. I tied it up and waited for him to join me on the tree.
“You take for ever Travis”
“I’m not as fast as you monkey lady” He said finally sitting down next to me
We sat there for a while, watching Letty eat and the view of the mountians in front of us.
“I think my mom and dad might get a divorce” He said sadly
“Don’t get all sad about it Travis, it happens. It’s not like your not going to see one of them again. Shit, wish my parents would divorce. I can’t stand them together, I don’t get how they fight one minute and then their fucking like rabbits the next.” I chuckled and that made him laugh too. I loved cheering him up when he was down. His smile was to die for, with his sweet little dipples that would magicaly appear on the sides of his cheeks. We were the same hieght, but I knew he wasn’t fully grown yet cause he still had barley any hair on his body. I wondered sometimes what he would look like if he had a beard. He had dark blond hair that was trimmed nicley around his ears that he spiked every morning. He was definitely cute with his blazing blue eyes though. I really wished he could just get a cool girlfriend that wouldn’t be so wiedo jealous of me, we were just best friends.
“Ya I know, I just don’t want to move away, thats all”
“The only place your moving to, is with me in the Oak Tree Apartments remember?” I said standing up stepping on the rope to swing off
We made plans last year to move into an apartment together after we turned 18. We both had jobs to support ourselves, but rent would be a little tight with just one person. He agreed that we should share expences and go to the community college here in town after school. It was a nice apartment complex we both came to love. His friend Tristan live there with his family and we would go over to hang out, mostly in the summer cause it had a huge pool and jacuzzi. I worked at the local supermarket in town after school and he delivered pizza’s on the weekends. We talked to both our bosses about more hours once school was over and they both agreed. Travis and I even got an application from the complex and sat down to go over everything we would pay for and some rules we would follow as well.
First rule was about having company over, male or female we would have to inform eachother about the company before inviting anyone over. Second rule was no partys, which we both don’t really like the whole party scene anyway, but peer pressure could get in the way with that at times. Third rule was that if we were to lose our jobs and can’t find one within two weeks we would have to move out immediately. We couldn’t wait to get out and live together. We already talked it over with our parents and they didn’t really care much what we did once we moved out.
I swung back to him and handed him the rope and he looked at me
“If they split, they might move though, what then?” He said and jumped out to swing himself
“I don’t care, I’ll hunt you down and kidnap you”....I laughed, while watching him swing. He barley made it back to the tree and I grabbed his hand just in case... “Or you can live with us. My brothers room is empty. I’m sure my mom and dad wouldn’t mind. Stop thinking so negative about things”..... I started to whistle after swinging myself and then started to sing.... “here’s a little note I wrote, might want to sing it note for note don’t worry be happy”
Travis started to laugh agian and we continued singing the song together after that.
Chapter 3
We stayed at the swing till it started to get dark and finally took off. We used the tree to get back on Letty but, she didn’t like it much and it took a little longer to straddle her. It was totally dark when we got closer to the houses.
“Next time lets leave sooner, I hate riding her in the dark” I say after she bucked a little from some car coming down the road. I calm her by stroking her neck
“Good idea”.... “Hey I never asked you yet, you are going to the prom this year... right?”
“You know I don’t go to those Travis” I said to him, but I really did plan on going, cause I knew he wanted to go so bad this year, but decided to keep it a secret and suprise him later about it.
“Come on Kendall, this is our last year, we got to at least go once?”
“Look... getting dressed up just isn’t my thing Travis you know that. Just go, you’ll have fun without me” I said with a smirk that he couldn’t see
“No I won’t, please Kendall, one night is all I’m asking?” I could tell he was getting sad again, so I had to say something for him to stop asking about it
“Did you ask Lexy yet? ”
“Ya, she was expecting me to ask her. So you going or what?” He wouldn’t let up
“I don’t know for sure, stop bugging me about it Travis”
“You know I’ll cancle and not go if you don’t, I’m not going if you won’t be there”
“I would kick your ass if you cancled, Lexy would too, now just shut up about it, I’m just not making any promises..k?”
“Ok so it’s a yes” He said all confident
“Whatever”
We made it back to the stable safley, we said good night to eachother and Travis took off home. I went into the house to go to bed, but my dad was sitting on the couch and called for me when I came in.
“Hey Kendall, you can’t be riding that horse when its dark!” He yelled, making sure I heard him from the kitchen
“I know dad, sorry, we tried to rush when the sun was going down but Letty got all scared being close to the tree as we straddled her” I said walking to the entrance of the livingroom
“Why the hell you riding her without a saddle?”
“Its just more comfortable that way with two people riding dad”
“O... you with that Travis kid again” He said lighting a cigarette while watching TV
I walked to the couch next to him and sat down. I notice he was on his fourth beer, which was an ok time to talk to him, otherwise he easily snaps if he’s drunk. We had a coffee table next to the couch with an ash tray that was the size of wheel sitting on it. He was watching some crime show. I put my feet on the coffee table to get more comfortable and decided to talk to him before going to bed. He liked talking to us unlike my mom who would avoid us at all cost. It was like she spit three kids out and told my dad “Now you deal with them.” Thats how it felt at least with her.
“Yep”
“Why is it you spend so much time with that boy, don’t you have any girlfriends?”
“No dad I’m not gay” I said jokingly
We both laughed and he ashed his cigarette in the wheel next to my feet
“You know what I mean, when you going to actually get some normal friends like your sister has”
“First off girls suck dad, you know I don’t like what they like”...I shoved his arm with my elbow.... “Blame it on Clay, he molded me into what I am today, following everything he did you guys got him into”
“Ya I know we kind of left you girls out of a lot” He sadly said watching the TV
Dam now my dads sad...I got up and walked out but made a cute comment before going to bed for the night that would make him smile
“I still love you DADDY”
Chapter 4
I went to my room to go to bed. My room was the furthest one from all the other rooms. I still had to past my sisters room on my way to it. I caught a peak of her as I walked past it. She was sitting at her vanity brushing her hair. Listening to Taylor Swift’s Blank Page and singing along with the music all loud. I stuck my head in so she could hear me talk to her.
“Hey!!! ....turn down the music I’m going to bed!”
She didn’t hear of course, so I walked in to turn it down myself
“Kendall what are you doing?!” ..... “Dad!!!” She said after wipping her head in my direction. We were not aloud in eachothers rooms with out permission. I knew dad wouldn’t care though with how loud it was and the fact that I wanted to go to bed.
“O shut up, I’m going to bed, I don’t want to hear it ...or your bad singing either.” I laughed as I walked out
“Your just jealous” Is all I heard from her while walking away
My room was very simple. The only furniture I had in there was a full size bed, dresser, a bean bag in the corner, and a coffee table that held my small TV, DVD player and stereo. I didn’t hang anything up or paint it either, like my sister’s room, when mom asked. I liked it the way it was with plain white walls. I got dressed in some light sweats and laid down thinking on how I would surprise Travis tomorrow about going to the prom. I came up with a good plan and fell fast asleep.
I woke up the next morning and saw my mom in the kitchen eating breakfast with my sister. My dad was gone probably to work, cause he would go in real early every morning. I notice there wasn’t much left for me to eat, so I grabbed a bowl of cereal instead. They were finishing up eating. My mom started to talk when she got up to take the plates to the sink.
“So when we going shopping Kendall?” She said smiling. I told her I was going to the prom cause Travis wanted to go this year. She thought I was going to go with him at first, but had to give her the speech for the hundreth time that we are just friends, nothing more than that. She still doesn’t believe me though. She said once “Girls can’t be friends with boys without something happening in between.” I couldn’t stand hearing that. She sounded like every bitch at school that thinks the same thing. I know better though, Travis and I have always been nothing but the bestest of friends, with nothing that has ever happened between us for 3 years.
“I don’t know, can’t you just pick something up for me?” I said dreading the fact of going shopping for a dress. She would usaully pick clothes up for me when I out grew them. It was pretty simple picking up clothes for me, when they only constisted of jeans and dark colored shirts anyway. I wasn’t a picky person, as long as they fit I was cool with it.
“No you need to be there, dresses need to be tried on, in case they don’t fit right in some areas” She said looking at my breast. I had developed a nice rack my freshman year and the girls at school hated me for it. It’s not like I had a choice that I developed quicker then them. Things between bully’s at school died down a year ago when they developed too, but they still harassed me for hanging out with their boyfriends, crushes, friends of their boyfriends or friends of their crushes. I hung out with a lot of guys at school besides Travis. They just gravitated to me to talk, whether it was about their relationships, crushes, school work, or sports. I was always surrounded by guys every where I went.
“Whatever, when you get off anyway” I said all annoyed
“We can go this weekend if you like, I have Sunday off”
“Ok then” I said finishing my last bite of cereal.
After that I went to my room to get ready for another crappy day at school. I took my sister to school every morning since I got my license, cause my mom needed her sleep after coming home from work who knows what times in the morning. She took for ever in the bathroom doing who knows what and made me late almost every morning. I hated taking her to school, but mom would give me enough gas money to last untill the weekend to hang out with friends if I wanted to go somewhere. I also got to drive the little Toyota pick up that I loved, my parents used for emergencys. So it was a win lose kind of thing.
“Bri!!! Lets Go!!! I yelled from the livingroom after getting ready and grabbing the keys to the truck.
“Ya, ya, ya” She said behind me finally
“I swear, I don’t know what you do in that bathroom all morning”
“You wouldn’t know or care. Your a boy remember?” She said and laughed
I turned around real quick before opening the door. Her eyes opened wide and her mouth dropped. She knew she messed up bad and that I planned to hurt her for what she said. Instead I smiled at her and responded calmly. I was so used to being teased at school about the same thing and was used to this kind of comment.
“I do care, unlike you I take a shower every night, I’m sure your friends know that right? Maybe I should let’em know when we get there?” I said wickedly.
“You wouldn’t”
“Try me”
