They pulled up and parked by Nane’s apartment building shortly after Friday night’s show.
“Wow, it’s a pretty big building,” Tesla said.
“Yup, six floors,” said Nane, putting the car in park in her assigned parking spot. “We’re on the first.”
“Do the people next to you and above you get noisy?”
“Nope. No one’s directly attached to me on the sides, and there’s just an older lady upstairs, and she’s as quiet as a mouse.”
“You’re lucky. Every apartment or duplex I’ve ever lived in was pretty noisy—some being worse than others, of course.”
They exited the vehicle and headed for the entrance. Nane looked terrific in her form-fitting dark silk blouse and jeans. She wore no necklaces or bracelets, but gold rings and dangling gold earrings instead. Tesla liked the way her long, soft layered curls bounced as she walked.
They pushed through a set of double glass doors and into a space that was between another set of double glass doors. Nane retrieved her mail from a row of mailboxes, then she unlocked the inner door and held it open for Tesla.
A long corridor stretched before them. Directly at the end of it was another set of doors.
“There are two apartments on each side, as you can see, with the elevator between the two on the side we’re on, and a laundry room between the two on the other side,” Nane said.
“The apartments must be rather long,” Tesla observed.
“They are. Hang on a second, Tesla dear,” Nane said, knocking on the door opposite hers. Nane’s was apartment number one—this was apartment number two.
A second later, Tesla heard the deadbolt being turned, and then the door was pulled open, allowing the stench of cigarette smoke to waft into the hall. An elderly gentleman in his sixties stood before them, and Tesla recognized him instantly.
“Dieter!” she exclaimed.
Dieter was also a friend of Nane’s on Facebook, and in time, he had friended her as well.
He cracked a wide smile and said, “Well, hallo there, mein friend. Nice to finally meet you.”
“I didn’t know you two were neighbors,” Tesla said, eyeing both Nane and Dieter.
“We weren’t until recently,” Nane explained. “He and his wife Anke had been wanting to leave the area they used to live in for some time, and so when this apartment opened up, I said they ought to think about taking it—and they did.”
A young couple made their way into the building from the same side they’d entered and passed by them with a quick glance before heading up in the elevator. Neither Nane nor Dieter appeared to know them.
“Sure beats London and central Germany. So how’s your German these days?” Dieter asked.
“It still sucks, but I haven’t really had time to work on it much.”
“How about the theater? Do you like theater work?”
“Yes and no. I like the pay and the fact that we get a lot of time off because it’s so demanding, but the traveling, the hotels, and the long hours do get old. I may soon look for something else.”
“I see. So you may be between jobs soon.”
“Actually, I’m sort of in-between lives right now.”
Nane and Dieter laughed.
“I’m recently divorced and not sure where I want to go or what I want to do, but I’ll figure it out.”
“I’m sure you will,” said Dieter. “I’m sorry I was unable to attend your show, but dear Nane here tells me you’re quite a performer.”
Tesla smiled and said, “I try.”
“Shhh,” Nane said with a chuckle. “Keep that big voice down.”
Dieter chuckled as well.
“Really, I cannot believe such a little thing can have such a big, loud, strong voice.”
“Sorry,” said Tesla.
“You’re alright, sweetie. Oh, Dieter, I just remembered the magazine I promised you! Hang on. Be back in a second.”
Nane unlocked the door to her apartment. Tesla wasn’t sure whether to follow her or to remain where she stood, but decided to remain put until she was officially invited inside.
“So what brings you here, little one?” Dieter asked.
Not sure what Dieter meant by the question, Tesla simply said, “Well, Nane invited me here.”
A note of concern crossed the older man’s features, and then he said, “Bad one to get with, honey.”
Tesla frowned with confusion, but before she could question Dieter, Nane appeared with a magazine in hand.
“Here you go, Dieter.” Nane handed him the magazine. “Let me get Tesla settled first, and then I’ll join you for a quick smoke, since I promised Tesla I wouldn’t smoke inside.”
“Oh, shame on you for running her out like that.”
Tesla’s jaw dropped. She wasn’t sure if she should laugh or defend herself.
“Oh, it’s alright,” Nane said with a laugh. “I’m the one who offered not to smoke in the apartment.”
Then Dieter smiled and told Tesla he was just kidding.
“Come on, sweetie,” Nane said, guiding her to her open apartment door.
“Nice meeting you, Dieter.”
“Same here.”
They entered the apartment, and Tesla found its bright yet simple décor cheery. The place was neat and stylishly furnished.
“What a lovely place you have.”
“Danke,” said Nane.
They entered the living room. The rooms basically formed a line, and the apartment was much longer than it was wide. The living room and kitchen were one big open area. Tesla glanced left toward the kitchen. To the right of the living room was the bathroom, which was sandwiched between the living room and bedroom.
“Just make yourself comfortable, put your stuff anywhere you want, help yourself to anything in the kitchen… whatever you want,” said Nane, stepping over to kiss Tesla on the cheek.
Tesla smiled and hoped she wasn’t blushing. “Ok,” she said.
“Back in a flash,” Nane said, closing the apartment door behind her as she headed back to Dieter’s place.
Tesla hesitated a moment, surveying the room and unsure what to do next. She decided to simply place her bag down on a plush chair and take a seat on the couch. She studied more of her surroundings as she waited, bored and tired.
Ten minutes later, Nane pushed through the door and closed and locked it behind her.
“Sorry about that,” she said with a smile.
“That’s ok,” Tesla assured her, wondering what would come next.
Nane pulled a bottle of wine from her refrigerator. “Would you care for some wine, my dear lady?”
“No thanks. I never was much of a drinker,” Tesla said, wondering if she should bring up what Dieter said. But she soon thought better of it, not wanting to create any kind of a rift between him and Nane. Besides, she wasn’t even going to be in the country much longer.
They sat on the couch with Nane sipping wine and her sipping fruit juice, making small talk until midnight. Tesla was mesmerized by Nane’s dark eyes and the intoxicating smell of her perfume.
Tesla sniffed the air and said, “You smell really good.”
“Why thank you, ma’am.” Then she yawned. “I’m sorry to be getting sleepy on you.”
“It’s quite alright. I’m pretty drained myself, and we’ve both been up since early this morning.”
Nane smiled.
Had it been suggestively?
“If I promise not to bite, do you think you might want to accompany me in my nice cozy bed, or shall I fetch you a blanket so you can crash on the couch?”
“I think I would like cuddling up with you,” Tesla said, hoping Nane would bite—at least a little.
Smiling brightly, Nane rose from the couch and said, “So be it. Do feel free to use the bathroom if you need to and make yourself comfy.”
Tesla also rose from the couch and said, “Ah, one thing, though.”
“What’s that?”
“Well, I don’t usually sleep in much. But I brought a nightie with me if you’d feel more comfortable with me in more than just my undies.”
Smiling again as if she were amused, Nane said, “You can sleep in whatever it is you normally sleep in.”
And so Tesla brushed her teeth and slid into Nane’s soft queen-size bed clad in nothing but her pink silky G-string. After brushing her own teeth, Nane slid into bed next to her, and then turned off the bedside lamp.
“You’re in great shape for your age,” Tesla said.
“And you have a great little body yourself,” said Nane.
They started off simply lying side by side and listening to the silence around them, aware of the heat of each other’s bodies as they lay against one another. Nane eventually gathered Tesla in her arms and gently rubbed her back as she held her to her. Nipples pressed together, they didn’t need any words to know their desire was mounting.
“I lived in New York for three years when I was twenty-three,” Nane said.
“Oh, yeah?”
“Ja, but I was never with a woman during that time. Back then I was more into guys. I was even married for a while—but that was a lifetime ago.”
“Was it?”
“Mmm…” Nane said. “But right now I would really like to get a taste of American pussy.”
Tesla giggled. “Would you? Because I would love to have you between my legs right about now.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“Good, because once I start, I’m not stopping,” Nane said in a serious tone.
Tesla laughed in the darkness as she felt her flimsy panties being removed.
