I forgot my wallet at work.
It shouldn't matter because I left it in the crew room, but I can't say that I trust most of my co-workers, so I better go get it.
I walked out to start my car, but when I looked at my parking spot I saw a truck parked behind mine. It looked like it was black or maybe blue. I couldn't tell because of how dark it was. I fumbled around in my bag to find my phone. I turned the flashlight app on my phone and shined it onto the truck. It was a black truck, I walked over to it with caution and shined the light onto the divers side window.
"Kolt?"
He didn't respond.
Why didn't he let me know that he was coming over?
"Do you want me to get in?"
He nodded with one firm nod, not turning his head to acknowledge that I was there.
So, I got in.
My heart was beating faster than normal and my whole body ached whenever i felt my heart beat.
He's still mad.
"Kolt?"
No response.
The roads were slick, I could not only see that from the dim reflection of the dim yellow streetlights but I could feel his car drifting. It was dark out and it didn't look like we were close to town anymore. If we were the buildings and signs would make the roads easier to see. The windows were covered in melted snow flakes and hard to see out of because of the lack of light.
"Kolt, where are we going?"
No response.
I looked over at him and saw that he was staring straight ahead. His jaw was clenched and his knuckles were white from holding onto the steering wheel so tightly. He had very dull eyes right now. His eyes didn't even look brown. They were a extremely pale green almost grey.
I let out a sigh and rolled down the window to clear off the water droplets on the window. The window slowly went down making a light screeching noise, which caused me to grit my teeth together. Once the window was down I felt a cold wave of air charge against my face. The snow flakes that were tapping against my cheeks and forehead were moving in so quickly that it hurt. It felt like little thumb tacks were poking around my face. My hair was wiping around behind my head and around my neck. Once the window was rolled back up the only part that cleared off enough for me to see through was the bottom portion of the glass.
Good enough.
I watched out the window hunching myself over a bit to make it more comfortable for my eyes to look out of the clear spot that I just made. We weren't on the country side because I could still see some buildings. The buildings were too dark for me to make out what they were. I squinted my eyes to get a better range of view.
Kolt turned left.
I felt my body jolt to the side that he was turning and I grabbed onto my seat belt. He must have hit some black ice because the truck started to drift onto the other side of the road. Luckily, it was too late for many people to be out driving. The car moved back to the correct side of the road.
"Kolt, you need to be more careful."
I looked out the window which was filled with water droplets again. I did the same rutine as before. The needle pins started to hit against my cheeks and my forehead just like last time. The wind wasn't bad enough to wisp my hair around this time . I guess, he listened to me. I rolled the window back up which cleared off the whole window so I was able to see out of it clearly.
The truck started to slow down. I looked through the front window long enough to see a speed limit sign
30 MPH
I looked at his speedometer
35 MPH
Well, at least he isn't driving like a lunatic anymore.
I looked back out the window. It seemed to have stopped snowing because the droplets never reappeared on the glass. We passed a long brown brick building. The building had a huge parking lot and it looked like it was only one story, but it had a lot of width. I narrowed my eyes again. The building had a large field next to it and a tennis court on the side that we just drove by.
That's my old high school.
"Kolt."
No response.
"Kolt where are we going?"
No response.
I looked over at him. His expression didn't change from earlier. I watched the front window for a while but it seemed like I wasn't able to look out of it. My vision felt blurred whenever I tried to look out the front window. It felt like my eyes were strained to even look out that way.
I must be getting motion sick.
I looked back out the passenger side window. The truck started to bounce around as if we were driving on unfinished road.
Yeah, I'm getting motion sick.
I rolled down the window to try and control the hot flashes that I was starting to experience. The window was nonexistent and the snow had stopped. Now it was just dark. The air felt thick and humid from the recent snow fall. I stretched my neck forward to stick my face out of the window and took a deep breath to capture some of the cold air in my lungs. I closed my eyes to help lock it in. After a few moments of holding it in I slowly let it out, opening my eyes the same speed as the air that was escaping my lungs. My eyes widened.
That's the church I used to go to as a child.
I felt the look of confusion for on my face. My eye brows felt forced together, I could feel my lips push together and against the fronts of my teeth.
"Kolt, tell me where we are going." I wasn't asking anymore I was demanding an answer. I was now locking eyes with the side of his face.
Kolt's lips that were pressed together opened up, showing how clenched together his teeth were. I saw his arms turn in one swift movement. I felt the truck spin out into an area that was off of the main road. The whole truck felt like it was spinning even though I knew it stopped. I always got bad motion sickness.
I felt my breathing get heavier and quicker. I waited for myself to calm down enough before I turned to face him again. My face was fuming and I could feel my eyes wide with annoyance. "Kolt Bashton you tell me what is going on right now!" I could hear how shrill my voice sounded.
Kolt turned to look at me than got out of the car. His body movements felt forced and sporadic. I could tell from outside of the truck that he was stomping his feet as he walked over to my side to open the door for me. He yanked my door open and side stepped out of the way for me to get out.
I didn't move. I just looked out of my open door with an irritated expression on my face. "Kolt, you-" before I finished my sentence I noticed where I was. I could never forget the completely wooden house. The color of red/brown that it was painted. The higher up I looked the more unfinished the house presented itself. Some of the window frames were broken and some of them were unpainted. We were in the drive way at my old house. My heart sunk down to my stomach and my stomach did flips up to my throat.
I felt like I was having a panic attack. I have no idea what's going on. "Why are we were?" I said demanding an answer yet again.
Kolt stood on the opposite side of my open door, holding it open for me. "What your dad did was unforgivable. Annaya needs you." His voice had no expression with it.
Was he still mad at me?
"If she needs me why are we here?" I asked.
As I was finishing my question Kolt was already walking towards the house. I could see his shoulders moving in determination.
Oh god, what is he doing?
I unbuckled my seat belt as quickly as I possibly could and got out of the truck, almost stumbling because of the speed I was doing everything. I started to run over and catch him.
"Kolt! Wait!"
He opened the door open with so much force that I saw the door pound against the side of the house and bounce back, shutting with a loud slam.
"Stop!" I tried to shout before the door shut completely.
I ran up the three steps on the front porch and lunged myself to the door knob. It wouldn't open. I shook it a few times. This door always got stuck if you shut it too hard or too quickly.
Goddamnit, Kolt, this isn't like you.
I shook the door knob a bit more, using more of my body weight.
He must be really mad at my father.
ching-clack
The door opened and when I walked in I couldn't see any one. The lights were on in all of the rooms, but there was no one in them.
"Kolt?" my voice echoed through out the house.
I heard some rustling from the back rooms.
What is he doing?
I shut the door behind me and started to out of the entrance to the hallway that led to the back rooms. My heart was beating so fast that I could actually feel the pulsing in my throat.
The rustling noise got louder and then it stopped.
"Kol-" I don't know why I stopped myself from saying his name. I was freaking out and I had no understand as of why I was doing it. I slowed my pace down and poked my head into the room that I heard the rustling. This room seemed brighter than all of the other rooms. I could see my shadow growing from the corner of my eye as I stepped into the room.
I heard sniffling and light sobs.
I turned my head towards the noise and saw that it was Annaya. She was sitting on her knees in the corner of the room. Her hands were covering her face and her shoulder were bouncing in rhythm with each sob that she let out. Her hair was parted down the middle of her neck making it that so each side of her face was unnoticeable by her hair.
"Annaya what are you doing here? I thought you were back at the apartment," I said as I started to walk normal again towards her.
She didn't respond to me. All she did was start to sob louder.
"Annaya, why are you here?" I asked louder so she would be able to hear me.
Her sobs instantly stopped. I could see her body start to straighten up. She was no longer hunched over in a crying position and her hair fell to the sides of her shoulders instead of the sides of her face. But she didn't respond to me again.
I was starting to get irritated that she wasn't replying to me. I just saw her body react to my voice. She does this a lot. She thinks that because she has trouble hearing people will bend over backwards for her. The worst part is that some people do. When they first meet my sister they get her whatever she wants and they take it out on themselves when she can't hear them the first time. She tells me all the time that she doesn't want to be treated any differently than everyone else, but I know that she secretly enjoys part of it.
I waited for a few seconds to see if she would acknowledge my presence, but she didn't. She just stayed there, sitting on her knees, staring at the corner, so I walked over to her side and hunched over. "Annaya."
She started to look the other way, away from me, then without any warning she wiped her head to look right at me. She locked eyes with me and just stared into mine.
When Annaya turned to look at me, I didn't see Annaya anymore. Her dark black hair wasn't black it was now a chestnut brown. Her sky blue eyes were slowly changing into a speckled green color. Her natural pale pink skin darkened into a light tan.
I gasped loud enough to be heard down the hallway, then quickly clasped my hands to my mouth to seal off any other startled noises I might make.
The eyes I am looking into are my own.
