Rex
My focus was on business, but Laura was always on my mind. She had her reasons for wanting to talk with Cameron. I didn’t care for his attitude during the conversation and after the fact when he left her office.61Please respect copyright.PENANAUliaEl771l
Movement in the hall drew my eye. I tried not to smile when Laura marched past with the flowers. She was damn cute all worked up. My attention returned to the meeting until the desk phone rang. Mr. Giles answered. He said Lenny was on the phone asking for me. The name wasn’t familiar. Mr. Giles explained he was in charge of the front desk.
My heart thumped in my chest when I answered the call, “Rex Andrews.”
“Hi, Mr. Andrews. I have Miss Reynolds here in the lobby. There was a situation. She’s upset.”
“I’ll be down in a moment, thank you,” I ended the call. “Mr. Giles, please continue. I’ll follow up with you.”
He looked annoyed, but I didn’t give a damn.
Miss Barbara was given instructions in the hall. I took the elevator down to the lobby. Laura was seated in the waiting area. She tried to hide how upset she was. A guy hurried around the desk. I took in his uniform. “You must be Lenny.”
“Yes Sir, Miss Reynolds was leaving the building when she was stopped. The guy was in here earlier with flowers for her, so I didn’t think much of it,” Lenny glanced at Laura. “Miss Reynolds was in distress, so I went out there to check things out. The guy was kind of aggressive. I told him to back off. He left. Miss Reynolds didn’t want to file a police report. She told me to call you.”
My jaw tightened a little, but I nodded to thank him. Lenny returned to the desk. I went to where Laura was and bent down to meet her at eye level. She was trembling and close to tears. “Hey, what happened?”
“I was leaving to visit the rental properties,” her voice was barely above a whisper. “Cameron was outside. He kept saying we needed to talk. I wanted him to leave, but he wouldn’t.”
“Did Cameron hurt you?”
“No. I felt really uncomfortable because he blocked my path, so I couldn’t reach my car or come back in,” Laura shook her head. “I shouldn’t have accepted his flowers.”
“You’re not to blame. Do you want to file a report?”
“I don’t know, all of this is too much,” she was about to cry, and I didn’t want it to happen.
“Hey, you don’t have to decide right this second. Would you like to return to your office?”
“I can’t. I’m expected at the properties. I’ll be late.”
“I can go with you.”
“Oh no, you can’t,” Laura pulled it together. “You’re needed here. I’ll be fine. Lenny can walk me to my car and then I’ll go.”
“I won’t let you go alone,” my tone was intimate. “I’ll finish up here, and we’ll visit the properties together. I’d like a tour. Please call ahead and arrange things. Your schedule will continue, and I’ll have a firsthand look at how things are done onsite.”
“Thank you. I’ll call right away,” she whipped out her phone and was talking within seconds.
I told Lenny to notify the police if Cameron Wright came back for any reason. I returned to the conference room. Miss Barbara was waiting. She quickly relayed the meeting minutes. I walked back in and picked up without interrupting the conversation.
Mr. Giles was impressed or pissed off. I wasn’t sure which, but his feelings would surface at some point. We would address it when the time came. The meeting ended a short time later. I spoke to Miss Barbara and included my whereabouts for the afternoon. She ran down the updates on our way to my office. I grabbed my keys and phone and then returned to the lobby. Laura was ready.
