‘Oh, my god!’ She thought to herself when she saw the space inside the wardrobe. She could actually walk inside it like another apartment within her apartment!
From that day on, Jenny went shopping almost daily after work. When she was in a good mood, she would buy more than usual to celebrate. But when she was upset, she would buy even more to vent.
One day during lunch, Betty asked her, “what is going on with you recently?” Jenny responded with another question, “what do you mean?”
“You are shopping like there is no tomorrow, or there is no way to fill up your wardrobe. Did you get a new boyfriend or a promotion that I don’t know about?” Betty asked in a naughty tone.
And Jenny just responded with a wink, “well, something like that.”
Several months passed. There was more and more stuff put inside the wardrobe. Although its size is unlimited, it was getting hard to actually find anything inside.
On the night of the company's annual ball, Betty called Jenny on the phone.
“Where are you right now? The ball is going to start in a few minutes.” Betty asked.
“I am still at home. I can’t find the cocktail dress I bought a few days ago. I am turning my wardrobe upside down to find it,” Jenny answered with frustration.
While rolling her eyes, Betty asked, “it is just a wardrobe, how hard can it be?”
“You have no idea,” Jenny answered.
She ended up buying another cocktail dress to attend the ball that night. And starting from that, whenever she got frustrated finding something from the wardrobe, she would simply buy a new one.
And so the wardrobe ended up with even more stuff inside.
Jenny’s mother had been diagnosed with Leukemia (or blood cancer) a couple of years ago. And she had been admitted to the hospital ever since. One late night, Jenny got a call from her dad.
“Honey… it is me.” said her dad.
Jenny knew something was not right just by the tone of his voice. She asked, “hey dad, what’s up? Are you all right?”
“I am… at the hospital,” answered her dad. And before hearing another word, Jenny knew her mother had passed away. In fact, both she and her dad had already prepared for this day. But nobody could ever prepare for when it actually happened.
After Jenny finished the call, she couldn’t sleep. Because her mind was flooded with all the memories she had of her mother. And she suddenly remembered her mother had given her a gorgeous silver ring last year for her birthday.
But she couldn’t remember exactly where she put it. It was somewhere in the wardrobe. She knew it wouldn’t be easy to find it, because there was just too much stuff there. But she was determined.
After spending hours searching in the wardrobe, she still had no idea of where the ring would be. And she was exhausted. Tears started dropping from her eyes. Not because of sadness, but a sense of guilt. She wiped her face with her hand, and she continued the search.
It was already dawn. Daylight started coming into her apartment. Then she saw something shining in a deep corner of the wardrobe. And there it was, she found the ring.
After that night, she never used that wardrobe again.
A couple of months later. Jenny was having lunch with Betty at the mall as usual.
“I am getting the new iPhone for the bigger storage, when are you going to upgrade yours?” Betty asked.
“No, I’ll pass this time,” Jenny instantly responded. “Why not? You always complain your phone doesn’t have enough space for all your photos.” Betty asked doubtfully.
“Not anymore, I’ve removed most of the photos,” said Jenny.
“What happened? You broke up with your new boyfriend?” Betty looked at her with eyebrows raised.
“There is no new boyfriend.” Jenny continued calmly with a smile, “it is just I’ve learned to only keep the truly important stuff.”
