Upon hearing the low blast from Caesar’s horn, Gretel rushed forwards from the inner trenches leading a team of men and women bearing heavy crossbows. The dark-blue haze of the forest was only lightly disturbed by the harrowing sounds of battle in the distance. Making all haste, the team sped between the trees.
The horn sounded again, about halfway between the inner and the outer trench, and emerging from the shadow came those who retreated from the bounding army of Goblyns. Rocks and splintery poisoned Goblyn arrows sailed overhead. Caesar spotted Gretel and his entire company dashed behind the trees. Gretel crouched and formed a firing squad and slew all enemies that were in direct pursuit.
“Perfect timing for a dramatic save,” said Caesar, as he stepped out from behind a tree. “Quickly, that was not the last of them!”
Gretel and her squadron ran backwards to the inner trench, firing a constant stream of bolts at the enemy, while Caesar’s men went on ahead. Eventually the enemy once again became too great and Gretel was forced to turn and flee with all her speed. She could feel the great armoured Goblyns right on her tail. The city wall loomed suddenly above and another blanket of arrows rained down, slaughtering the last of the pursuers. They were safe now at the inner trench, but the night was still young.
