I ducked my head down and made my way to class.
The only real reason I went to school was to keep my brain sharp, and so I didn't get distracted and bored too easily. Yeah, after 203 years I had pretty much learned as much as I needed to know in elementary school and middle school, so I went to high school--which, of course, gained me unwanted attention. But being a vampire, I was able to loose the attention as quick as it came.
My strangely red eyes, like what every vampire has, usually had humans asking to take pictures of me--which, when they went to look at their phones, I hadn't appeared in them--and by that time, they had completely forgotten about me.
The werewolves usually glared at me and let out a growl or two. They forget about me right after that, because werewolves are part dog--or wolf, same thing--and they live in the moment.
The beating of hearts drummed in my ears, and I tried and failed to block the annoying noise out. A vampire has heightened senses, and in the modern world, it kind of sucks.
I pushed my locker shut and closed my eyes, taking a deep breath and inhaling the air around me.
Armpit smell--jeez, people really needed to use deodorant--old textbooks, perfume, and then--a musty, deep, dark smelling scent.
There were only two things that smelled like that. Rotting cotton carpets....and vampires.
Now don't get the idea that vampires smell especially bad; it's just that they have a certain distinctive scent. Only werewolves and vampires can actually smell it, so if you're a normal human, don't worry.
Actually, I take that back. Do worry. If a vampire is about to suck your blood, you won't know beforehand and manage to save yourself. You'll probably die.
So there was either a carpet rotting somewhere in the school--or a vampire.
I decided to follow the smell. It wasn't like missing class would be bad--no one would notice me not being there.
I lifted up my head and began to follow the whiff. It brought me around a corner, through a hallway, and finally back to the classroom where I was supposed to be at. I peeked through the door and spotted...nothing. It was probably just the carpet. I was turning around to leave, and take the day off of school, when all of the sudden a desk crashed to the floor. I turned back towards the door, only to see a bright pair of red eyes staring back at me. It was a boy, old enough for high school (unlike me), and he was glaring at me. For what? I don't know. But what I did know was that it meant a challenge. So I did the only reasonable thing to do.
