6 MONTHS LATER
“Mmmm. Yup! You should be good now, Saw!”
“Yes! Finally, I can go back to playing basketball! One more month and I was going to be depressed!”
Over this short time, I’ve grown to like and respect Dr.Pete. Even after what happened that night, Dr.Pete is nice to us, buys us things, and is slowly starting to eat dinners here and there with us. It feels like… Dad. Damn… Is mom… trying to replace Dad with Dr.Pete?
CHATPER 62: A Look In The Past - 11
“How about this, I will make you all dinner tonight!”
“Really!?” We all said shocked..
“Yes… I’m actually a really good cook.”
“Really? You never mention that.” Mom said
“I don’t think I’m supposed to. I mean, I didn’t think it was relevant.”
“Well, sure! I think we can all go for dinner!” Mom said, smiling at him and he smiled back.
“Anything you would want in specific?”
“How good are you at spaghetti?”
“Super good! I’ll make the best pasta, you will ever taste!”
“Well depending on how good it is…” My mom then walked up to Dr.Pete and whispered something and Dr.Pete’s whole face went completely red and a huge grin went on his face as he dashed towards his phone to call in sick day.
“I’m off right now! As a matter of fact!” Dr.Pete said smiling as he picked up Eddie on his shoulders. ”Now, who is ready for some pasta!”
“I am!” Eddie said laughing as Pete held Eddie higher and laughed with them as they walked out of the room, leaving the room joking and laughing.
“Those two get along really well,” I said to Mom who just smiled at me and then hugged me before asking.
“What about you and Dr.Pete? I know he’s been visiting to check on your leg and to see what Eddie is doing with his life, and…”
I cut her off and said “And to check on you as well.” I’ve never really been one for cutting people off and finishing sentences for them; however, she would have taken a year if I didn’t do otherwise.’
“Yeah…” She finishes with a smile.
“Dr.Pete… is he staying with us after today? My leg is all fixed up now.” The excuse of him coming to check on my leg can’t be used anymore, so what excuse could it be now?
“To be honest with you… I don’t know. However, there’s one thing… I like the vibe and energy Dr.Pete brings to our family again. Reminds me of…”
“Of Dad… Huh? I thought the same thing.”
“Yeah. A change though.”
“I… don’t mind change.”
“Hey you two, you coming!?” We heard Dr.Pete peeking his head through the door.
“Something important? Should I leave?”
“Nope, you’re fine Pete. We’re coming!”
“Oh, nice!”
“Hurry up slowpokes! I want to eat!” Eddie whined still on Dr.Pete’s shoulder.
“We’re coming, we’re coming!” I yelled opening the door.
…
“After you l- Ms!”
“Thank you!” My mom said as Dr.Pete opened the door to our house with the spare key my mother handed him when she couldn’t get back home in time from work herself, and needed someone to watch Eddie when I was still limping on my feet and wasn’t good at crutches anymore.
The moment, we got into the house Dr.Pete spun Eddie on his arms until he got dizzy and had to put Eddie down and stumbled around the room laughing.
“You look drunk right now!” My mom said, laughing as Dr.Pete, grabbed her arm and spun her around with him.
“We don’t need alcohol to enjoy life! Enjoy life with me!” That’s when they both stumbled onto each other.
“Is this grownup business I keep hearing at night?” Eddie said, covering his eyes and smirking because he knew what he was doing.
“What!? No, me and your mom are just… really good friends!” Dr.Pete said, picking himself up and lifting Mom as well, blushing heavily and my mom grabbed a glass of water to calm herself down.
“Now! How about pasta!?”
“Yeah, spaghetti!” Eddie smiled when he took his hands off his eyes.
“Pasta, Vasta, El pasta, el vasta, el pasta.” Dr.Pete sang as he started to make the pasta.
“That’s kind of catchy!” Mom said dancing to it and singing it with him.
“I want to sing it too!” Eddie said, laughing and joining them.
“Come on Saw! Sing and dance!”
“Oh, what the heck!?” I sang along with them, as we danced, sang, and laughed all night and of course, ate pasta.
“Well, this was fun! However, I do have work tomorrow, this will also be the last time I see you guys. Since… I’m being transferred to another city.”
“No! Dr.Pete don’t leave! We’re not… going to be able to see you again, since Saw’s leg is healed. Please, don’t go.”
“I’m sorry Eddie. However, there’s not much that can be done there. Unless your brother breaks a limb again. Which he shouldn’t do! My case here is finished.” Dr.Pete said, grabbing his coat off the coat hanger.
“I’ll visit sometime in the future, how about that?” Dr.Pete said, smiling at Eddie.
“Yeah!” Eddie smiled and went to hug Dr.Pete.
“I’m going to miss you though…” Eddie, trying to not cry, said in a low tone.
“Me too…” Dr.Pete hugged back and this time even Dr.Pete sounded like he was about to cry.
It’s not like Dr.Pete was going to be gone forever. Still, this feels too much like a goodbye. Like if we stay bye now, it will be more permanent than what we think.
Still, Dr.Pete then rubbed Eddie’s hair, and stood up and smiled as he started to walk towards the door.
“Wait! Pete! I- Can we talk really quickly outside?”
“Oh, of course.” That’s when Mom and Pete walked outside and closed the door behind them.
“Well, I’m listening in,” I said, pressing my ear against the door and Eddie doing the same.
“You hear anything?”
“If I did, I can’t due to someone talking over them,” I said to Eddie to trying to hear.
“Well, your talking is distracting too…” Eddie said, also focusing as hard as he can.
“The kids, they love you. I don’t think they want you to go…”
“Hell, what about you?”
“I… I love you… I love you, Pete.”
“I love you too.”
“So now what?”
“Well, do you… want to be my girlfriend?”
“No.”
“What!?”
“I want… to be your wife.”
“Really?”
“Really.”
“Seriously?”
“I’m so serious. We could date, if you want. However… I think I know my decision.”
“Wow… I’m shocked. Part of me is saying we’re moving too fast, but the other part of me is saying, Does speed really matter?”
“So, what do you want to do Pete?”
“Well… Rose Mary Brooklyn, If you would… I would love to spend the rest of my life with you and with your fabulous sons. If you so allowed me to do so. To one day not just become a husband, but a father.”
“Yes!”
“They’re getting married!?” Me and Eddie both yelled at each other as the door opened and we both fell out on the ground.
“Eddie! Saw! Did you guys… hear all that?”
“We did.”
“Well, if you didn’t know… I’m marrying your mother.”
That’s when Eddie stood up and hugged Dr.Pete.
“So you can stay?”
“I can stay.”
“Yes! Does that mean… I can call you Dad?”
That’s when Dr.Pete looked down and tears started to go down his right eye as he picked up Eddie and put him on his shoulder and smiled at him.
“Of course! Anytime! Whenever you want to! From now on, you are my boy and I’ll move hell and back to make sure you’re life is amazing.”
“Okay... Dad!”
“Glad you’re staying Dr.Pete.”
“Please, just call me Pete!”
“Right. Pete!”
“Welcome to the family!” My mom said kissing him on the cheek making Pete’s face turn completely red.
“I love you guys! Now I know we had this moment together but... I have to use the bathroom!”
“Pete!” My mom laughed and jokingly punched him in the arm.
“What!? A man’s gotta go! Must be that pasta...”
“Eww!” Eddie laughed, as he pretended to fake barf.
“Way too much information Pete!” I said in a disgusted tone, joining in the laughter.
“Well fine, I’ll take my stomach problems with me then!” Pete smiled as he started to walk towards the bathroom but as he placed his hand on the knob his hand quaked.
“Pete?”
That’s when, in an instant, he scooped me up and it looked like he might have gotten to my brother but I’ll never be too sure since... The walls were sent flying in as the once humble home of a new family, was now completely collapsed.
