Deep within the earth, even deeper than the volcano and its lava, deeper than the caverns and caves that intertwined and snuggled up against one another, down into the core of the earth where the secrets of creation were stored, lived mysterious things and mysterious creatures, and occasionally even evil things born of myth and legend that should never have seen the light of day.
One such creature was Lilith. Born in Heaven an angel of sexuality and life, she had been seduced by Lucifer’s deceit, and fallen to earth. There, she incarnated as a creature of darkness, expressed as a forked tongue and multiple tentacles, and spent her days dining on the depraved thoughts of her adherents who, in their search for love, often used her as a substitute.
Lava oozed, and fire crackled down in the depths of her pit. Ten million years she had lived down in this hole, spending her days curled up in a bed of her own membranes. The stench of ever-present decay was music to her nostrils.
Today, she writhed in the luxury of worship. Her newest adherent, Molech, had come to see her again.
He told her all of his hopes and dreams. All he’d ever wanted, and all he needed to accomplish it. He’d ravished her, and she’d ravished him, and in return for his veneration, she’d given him his answer.
“You wish your dreams to come true, do you not?” She’d asked him, her voice rough as gargled gravel.
“I do,” he’d responded. “I need my bill to pass the senate.”
“There is a price,” she’d told him, edges of her tentacles reaching up to stroke his face.
“I am ready to do anything,” he said. “What is the secret to harnessing such power?”
“Innocent blood,” she’d rasped, her two-toned voice resonating from the rafters. “Innocent blood carries the power you will need.” The putrid stench of days’ old blood tickled his nostrils, and he turned his head to avoid retching.
Molech had considered her advice unhappily. He had hoped there might be a more convenient way.
“…it helps if it’s someone close to you as well,” she’d slithered, wrapping her myriad limbs around him. “Great sacrifice…great innocence…great gain….”
He hadn’t wanted to accept it at first—no one ever did. He’d told her there was no one innocent in his life…not to mention no one he loved.
…or was there?
Shecould sense the moment the idea formed in his mind.
“You already know who,” she had whispered, forked tongue to his ear. “Bring me this sacrifice…your bill will pass.”
Molech had shuddered, but he had understood.
Lilith had laughed. A deep, satisfying, shrill, awful, laugh.
She knew Molech would carry out the dreadful deed. Drawing her tentacles down from the ceiling strategically, she secreted more goo, shuddering with renewed energy as she fed off his disgust.
They were going to need it for the night she had planned for them.
