Jason ran down the sidewalk. His feet slapped against the concrete, sending shock waves through his legs. Sirens filled the air as he got closer and closer to the hotel. He had dropped his groceries on the ground and ran after he heard on the news at the restaurant that a hotel was on fire, and that it was theirs. He couldn’t drive, the traffic was unbearable because everyone was freaking out and running through Denver.
He turned around a corner to find that the entire hotel was on fire. Many voices filled his head, panicked voices. There was a huge crowd in front of the hotel. Golden flames had consumed the entire building, turning it a coal black.
Jason ran through the entire crowd, screaming Lily’s name. There was no response.
Help… me… A voice said in Jason’s head. Jason turned his head to the entrance of the hotel. It was Lily’s voice.
Lily? Jason yelled in his mind. Where are you?
Jason… I can’t breathe… I can’t breathe… I can’t breathe… Lily thought to him.
Where are you? He thought back sternly. When she didn’t respond, Jason threw off his jacket.
“Umm… sir?” A firefighter tapped Jason on the shoulder. Jason didn’t respond, he continued staring off into the entryway. “Are you looking for someone?”
Jason didn’t respond. He launched to the entrance of the hotel, the firefighter yelling at him to stop. Adrenaline pumped through Jason’s veins, making his feet race faster than a cheetah. He passed through the pitch black doors. He stood in the middle of the lobby. “Lily!” Jason yelled, “LILY!” The whole place fell apart, the walls were drooping and the ceiling was crashing onto the ground. The smoke suffocated him, he pulled his arm to his mouth and nose. The room waved as the heat pulsed from the fire.
Jason knew there was only one place Lily would be, because she was sleeping. He ran to the staircase that was separated from the rest of the hotel. It wasn’t on fire yet, but the heat was burning through the walls. Sweat rolled down Jason’s arms as he darted up the stairs. He couldn’t breathe with all of the smoke and the lack of oxygen, but he had to get to Lily. He was sure that the firefighters didn’t even know she was there.
When he finally got to the tenth floor, he threw open the door that led to the halls. Heat pulsed through the entire passage. There were patches of fire that created holes in the floors and walls.
Jason lightly stepped on the floors, realizing that they would collapse at any moment. He darted through the halls, not taking in the fact that he needed a way out. The floor gave after each of his steps, collapsing from behind him. He finally made it to their room. He kicked the door and it burst in with no problem.
The entire room was on fire. Smoke filled the entire area, causing Jason to gag. He pulled his arm over his mouth. He looked to the right of the room where the fire extinguisher was supposed to be, but it was gone. Oh god… Jason thought, This was planned.
“Lily!” He yelled. He saw a leg spread out across the floor. His stomach dropped and he ran over to the corner of the bed where the wall ended. He kneeled down in front of her. Panic rose in his throat.
Lily sat on the ground, red and black burns formed on her face, legs, arms, neck, throat. God… There were burns everywhere. Blisters surrounded her burns, causing her skin to flake. A huge chunk of a burning ceiling had fallen on her waist, that’s why she couldn’t get up. Her eyes were closed. She breathed shallowly.
Jason looked up to her scalp where ice was forming on her hair. Was her body trying to protect itself? He touched her arms and found out that they were cold and damp. It seemed as if the fire burned through her ice powers. Past her shoulders, her hair was burnt and crisp. It stuck to the wall, leaving her clung in place. Wasn't hair supposed to melt?
He shook his head. They needed to get out of there, Jason didn’t care if she got upset with him if he did what he was about to. In fact, he hated himself for doing it as well. He shoved his hand into his pocket and pulled out her father’s pocket knife. He flipped the blade open and bit his lip as he sliced her hair from her shoulders. He cut her dress that was snagged on the wall as well. He placed his hands under the chunk of ceiling that kept her in place, and pushed with all of his might, throwing it across the room. Her dress was covered in scorching black burns that formed holes in the fabric. He could see bits of her stomach where her skin bled and blazed. He winced at the pain she must have felt.
He placed his arms under her knees and back and lifted her, coughing from all of the smoke that choked him. When he walked past the broken door, his stomach dropped and his eyes grew. All of the floors were sunken in and broken, leaving a huge gap in between him and the staircase. “Jesus…” Jason muttered, his eyes narrowing into a glare, “Where’s Celeste when you need her?”
He looked down at Lily. Her head fell back off his arm. She was completely unconscious. If he were to jump, the weight of both of them when he landed would definitely crash them both through the floor. But he decided to do it anyway. He walked into the hall and jumped as high as he could. His stomach surged with panic as they passed over a huge hole in the middle of the floor. They landed on the ground and he jumped again onto the top of the staircase as the floor collapsed. He panted heavily and still choked on the suffocating smoke that started filling the staircase. He needed to get Lily medical help. He ran down the staircase two steps at a time, passing corner after corner. He tried to run as fast as he could, his hands blistered from the burning ceiling chunk that landed on Lily.
He made it to the lobby and he darted to the front doors that started giving in. He passed them just before they collapsed to the ground, leaving clouds of dust.
They made it outside. Relief washed over Jason as he coughed and gagged. His throat ached as his lungs cleared all of the dust and smoke that filled them.
After his coughing fit, Jason dropped to the ground, lightly placing Lily on the cold concrete. He placed two of his fingers on her neck as firefighters and paramedics surrounded both of them. He felt a very faint pulse, he sighed in relief. She was alive, barely breathing, but still alive.
“Are you insane?” A firefighter asked harshly.
“You could’ve died from that!” Another yelled. Jason didn't care about their panicked yelling. All he cared about was that Lily was okay. Well… alive.
Jason let the paramedics lift Lily up and set her on the stretcher, placing an oxygen mask over her mouth and nose. He stood, his cheeks and arms filled black dust and char.
“Can I ride with her?” He asked. His eyes wide with concern and fear. Panic rose from his spine.
One of the paramedics looked over at him and nodded. She had dark brown hair and eyes that shone with worry.
Jason climbed in the ambulance as they rolled Lily in and her stretcher clicked in place. One of the paramedics held the mask of her nose and mouth. The other shut the doors and placed a mask on Jason’s face while he sat on the bench. He felt his head rush at the feeling of oxygen getting to his brain. Then they drove off to the hospital, leaving the building of burning dust behind.
