Ashlyn couldn't believe her ears. She and Caeden had just won the best delegate award for their double delegation in the Model United Nations conference. They had worked hard, and debated well, and impressed the judges. They had represented France, and defended their interests, and made their allies. They had been a great team, and a great pair.
They had also been great friends, and maybe more. Ashlyn had a crush on Caeden, ever since they met at the MUN club. He was smart, and funny, and handsome. He was kind, and confident, and charming. He was her partner, and her crush.
She looked at him, and smiled. He smiled back, and hugged her. They went up on stage, whispering a quick 'congratulations' to each other, and accepted the award.
"Would you like to make an acceptance speech?"
While she was hesitant, her partner nodded. He took the mic from the
He thanked the organizers, and the judges, and the delegates. He thanked Ashlyn, for sticking with him throughout, and mentioned that though she paid no attention to speeches, she was lobbying via chit the entire time... even though he couldn't see it then and at times, forced her to raise points on a speech.
He looked at her, and said something else. Something unexpected, and amazing. Something that made her heart skip a beat, and her eyes widen.
"Ashlyn, I really like you. Since we met at club that day, I always thought you were nice."
He said he loved her, and he meant it. He said he wanted to be with her, and he asked her. He said it in front of everyone, and he didn't care. He handed her the mic and bit his lip.
"You have to explain something to me. How do you have the courage to do this?"
The crowd was watching, in shock and awe at the two.
"I honestly have no idea..." he replied.
"Okay... yeah. Look, this is insane."
"Is it a yes or a no though?" he asked, desperately. He knew she probably might have liked him, but wanted validation.
He was hoping she would say yes.
But she didn’t say that. She didn’t say anything for a while. She just stood there, frozen, and speechless. She just looked at him, and then at the crowd. She just felt the pressure, and the panic. She just felt the fear, and the doubt.
She didn’t say yes. She said no.
She said no, and she didn't mean it. She said no, and she hurt him. She said no, and she regretted it. She said no, and she ran off the stage, certificate in hand. The announcer was looking at the two, in shock.
She thought it was a joke on his end, and she was angry. She thought something was off with him from the minute she stepped in the committee room.
She requested to be switched to a different class as him, and a different club. She did her level best to avoid him in school and all. He apologized, but she didn't hear it.
But she regretted it later.
She hated having to deal with the constant guilt of having lost a friend, and a question echoing over and over in her brain.
"Is a double delegation award considered as one award to both delegates or half an award for each of them?"
She couldn't even ask Caeden anymore.

A.N.
Friends turned enemies... I know that trope all too well. Just ask my real life friends (ones who aren't my enemies at present), or Ashlyn's parents (they were friends for ten short minutes, I guess)... or her twin siblings.
For some reason I'm in love with the trope.
You see, I too, used to have a friend who I currently consider an enemy. Here it was purely platonic friends to enemies, no crushes involved on either end.
And one more thing. SOMEONE ANSWER ME THAT QUESTION!!! Because someone I won an award with in a MUN says 1 each, and I say half.
I need a few more impartial third parties.
