“Foolish child!” Galaxy’s voice rasps out of the zombie. “You can never escape me!” With that, he holds up a gun, aims. And fires. Time seems to slow down. A familiar voice cries out, and I suddenly feel myself being shoved aside. As I fall, I see Asteroid’s body collapse onto the dock.
“Asteroid!” I scramble to my feet. I pick her up and carry her to safety behind a hot dog cart. Blood is gushing out of two gunshot wounds in her stomach and arm.
“Meteor, if I don't make it-” she starts.
“No. No no no. Just, no. Don’t talk like that.” I rip my shirt off and tear it into strips. I wrap the shreds around her injuries. “You'll be okay. It’ll be okay.” I pull her onto my lap. An explosion rocks the pier. The zombie collapses, human again. “Asteroid, the device is down. You have to stay with me!”
“Meteor,” she sits up slightly. “Kiss me.” Her lips brush mine. Teasing. Testing.
“Listen, Aster. Michael will be here with the sub soon. You said that you would die if I did. Imagine what I would do if you died!”
“Meteor.” She closes her eyes. “Kiss me, Meteor.” Her lips press tight. I hold her close, willing this all to be a dream.
The sub pulls up.
My lips part.
