Pairing: Jay Halstead x Reader
Another day in the Intelligence unit. It’s been a whole week since they started to work on a case. They found three bombs in three different locations, all of them were connected to one person. Nicolas Wilson. A psychiatrist, living on his own with memories from a really difficult past.
Jay took this very personally, cause’ the first one who got killed, was the men that he knew. A soldier, who always got his back. They were friends since they were kids.
For worse, the weather this day was awful, causing Jay and Y/N to feel off. In cases like this one, they knew their thoughts even if they didn’t talk to each other. She was his rock. No matter how hard work could be, she understands him, like no one. So does he.
They met almost 7 years ago when Jay was having nightmares and panic attacks after his service as a soldier. It was simple. One chair in the middle of the corridor started this amazing friendship.
“Is it taken?” he asked. His face was a mix of emotions. He could feel the tension between them.
“Oh-h, no, it’s not!” she answered and looked in his eyes. They seem to look a little off like he didn’t know what was happening. Bags under his eyes say a lot to her. He looked very tired, she wanted him to sit.
“Sorry to interrupt, I’m just curious. Are you new here? I mean, I’ve never seen you here before.” he took a seat, putting his hands on his knees. They’re shaking a lot.
“No. I was here a couple of times actually, but I never felt like I’m ready so, it’s my first time joining” he laughed a bit, causing her to look at him. Something about him was making her nervous, but at the same time, she felt she can trust him. After that, they were together in every meeting, talking, laughing, till they found that both of them work as detectives in CPD.
He shook his head at the question that Voight just asked. They’ve got nothing. The last lead was wrong and now, all of the members started to believe that Nicolas is not even in Chicago.
Jay took his jacket and went downstairs. He passed by Sergeant Platt’s desk and went to the basement to get his truck. He drove to his favorite restaurant just to buy coffee for him and cake for Y/N. It always makes her feel a little bit better.
When he headed out with a drink and snack in hand, his phone rang.
“Hey Jay, it’s Y/N. We got a new lead and I’m heading there now. Don’t worry and please be safe. I’m turning my radio off. See you at the district.” he didn’t even get a chance to say something.
Their relationship was peaceful. He trusted her as much she trusted him. Not only in work, but in personal life too. Sometimes it was hard to not yell at each other when they disagreed on something, but they were a one-piece, one person just with two different souls, which makes their friendship real.
This time it hits him differently. She was so confident, ready to take a bullet in the process, just to solve the case.
Jay headed back to the district and went upstairs to ask the team about the new lead.
“Hey guys, Y/N just called me and she told me about a new lead that you have found, what is it?” they looked at him confused. He didn’t understand what was going on so he just stand there, waiting for answers.
“There’s nothing new Jay. We didn’t find anything. Y/N went out just after you left so we thought that you were going out with her” Jay’s heart started to race.
“You- what? She literally just called me and she told me she’s turning off her radio and that I don’t need to worry. Oh my god. She’s with him” he realized.
“He knows her from the meetings. She was a volunteer 6 years ago in the same hospital where he was working. All the victims knew each other because of that. He has to have some list or something, we need to hurry”
“Jay, I’m so sorry, but we really didn’t know anything. She seemed a little off today, but we thought that it’s as usual, bad weather and a tough case.” Kim looked at him. She wanted to help, no matter what.
“Ok people. Jay, you and Kim stay here and try to find anything useful, there’s gotta be something. Upton you and Rojas, go to her apartment, maybe she left some signs, messages, and Ruzek. You and Atwater talk to his co-workers, maybe now they’ll remember something. Hurry up guys, we need to find her!” he yelled and stormed out of his office.
This whole situation, even if it sounds bad, helped Jay realize his feelings. His and Y/N’s friendship was a beautiful journey, but now, when her life is on the line, he feels like he wants more. He wants to hug her tight, kiss her and hold her like no one is there. He loves her.

Finally, after one hour, they have got a lead. Empty, useless church.
When they got on the scene, CFD and SWAT were already there. No one in and no one out they said. They were running out of time, knowing that Nicolas is inside with Y/N.
“Guys, we have a problem. Nicolas took a few more hostages, we don’t know how many. We saw Y/N, she’s perfectly ok.” chief Boden said, walking to the Intelligence unit.
Jay felt some kind of relief. Even if she was still inside, he knew she will be okay.
“Voight, I’ll go. If someone can talk through him, it’s gotta be me.” Jay said. He was more confident than usual because he had a reason. He had a mission to do, he needed to rescue her.
“I’ll go unarmed, alone, no one in beside me, it’ll work, trust me” Voight nodded. All of them were scared about Y/N and now Jay is going inside too because he wanted.
Jay talked to SWAT, he told him his plan and they agreed, which was craziness.
He walked in, unarmed as he said. Walking down the big stairs, he didn’t what he can expect downstairs when he heard:
“Hey, you! What are you doing up there?! I’m going to blow up this place with all of those people!” he looked down, searching for his favorite face. There she is. Looking up at him, tears in her eyes. Finally with someone who she knows.
“Hey, hey, hey! I came in peace, I’m unarmed and I won’t do anything to you! Just please, let those people go. We’ll get you out of here.”
“No, no! I know what are you trying to do. You want me to die in here! My whole life I helped and now? No one is there for me! This soldier told me that he can help me and what? He left me. Those women told me they loved me and what? They’re dead because of me! They all deserved that. And this detective? She wanted to help everyone, but not me, she knew me and she didn’t help! They’re all the same! And-” loud scream echoed in church. Blood was everywhere and in the middle was the body. Nicolas, with opened eyes, lay there with no life.
“Oh my God!” she whispered. She was tough, like no one. But in the end, everyone showes their emotions.
“Y/N, I got you. You’re safe now.” he kissed her forehead, stroking her hair with his hand. She was safe now. Because of him.
“I’m so sorry Jay, I should have told you that I know him. I’m so sorry”
“It’s okay baby, it’s okay. I should have told you something too, definitely sooner than now but this whole situation showed me how much important to me you are. I love you Y/N. I felt like it was my last chance to tell you that and-”
“Jay, I-… I’m not feeling okay, can we just go?”
“Yes, sure, I’m sorry”
“It’s not your fault, I just-” she was shaking so much. I took her hand and we went out, to people that we know.
