Anyone here a fan of Tokyo Ghoul?
What about Bleach?
Probably a weird question to ask considering I'm talking about a comicbook inspired series here. Like I said when I was talking about Lauren some of the characters in the Saviors came from stories I wrote drafts of but never published. In this case Seiji came from a more manga based story that took inspiration from Tokyo Ghoul and Bleach.
The novel was this basically, Seiji, who's first name was originally Kadan instead of Sanyu, is part of a group of humans able to summon weapons from different mythologies. His school is attacked by a man who lost control of his weapon and he's forced to awaken his own weapon in order to defend himself. After this a group of officers from a police force known as the WDS begin hunting Seiji and his group of friends. Not tooting my own horn here but I like to think that this plot was pretty good and its relatively easy to introduce to someone to. I never really came up with a title for the story besides Weapon Lord which was the group of humans Seiji was apart of. Like Lauren old Seiji had his own supporting cast, the happy go lucky Kaze Haiiro, the hotblooded Haruki and his more mellow sister Ai. Excluding Ai and the WDS members everyone had a weapon the could summon from different myths. Seiji had Moralltach and Caladbolg like normal, Kaze had Vajra, a bow that could fire arrows made of air, and Haruki had Dyrnwyn a flaming spear.
Now where does Bleach and Tokyo Ghoul come in? Well the overall idea of a group of human like people using weapons to fight came from watching episodes of Bleach. I didn't want to limit myself to just katanas so I opted to make the heroes and villains uses axes, knives, guns, spears and whatever weapon I could think of at the time. Also similar to Bleach were the powers, I was tired of the regular Shonen fight series using fire or ice as weapons so I decided to make it that all weapons were supposed to a have powers far from the norm. Caladbolg for instance could erase anything from existence. I also took the idea of weapons having some sort of release form from Bleach as well. Vajra went from old wooden bow to one made of clouds when Kaze said Atsuryoku.
Conflicts, some of the plot and the method of which the WDS agents fought came from Tokyo Ghoul. Weapon Lords as a group were feared by the people of Japan as a whole and as such they had to hide themselves much like the Ghouls in Tokyo Ghoul. The story was supposed to be a battle of morality. Why should humans care for a group of people who when angry could level an entire city? On the other hand why couldn't the WDS just try and learn more about the Weapon Lords and convince them to help humanity and have the good ones get rid of the more criminal Weapon Lords? Seiji was in the middle, his dad was a regular full blooded human but his mom was a Weapon Lord. The WDS agents used man made Weapons to fight back against the Weapon Lords similar to how the humans in Tokyo Ghoul used killed Ghoul's weapons to fight.
Like most things I've written drafts of this story had some issues. The characters were stronger than the ones I wrote for Iron Maiden in a way. I spent a lot of time creating backstories and believable reasons for a group of teenagers to want to overthrow the government but that's all that was good about the characters, their backstory. They mostly stayed static and almost everyone but Seiji was incapable of winning a fight without passing out or hurting themselves badly.
Seiji's design was partly inspired by these two,
Shinji Hirako of Bleach and,
Minato Arisato of Persona 3.
Seiji's hair and eye color was taken from Shinji and I mostly had him in my mind when I pictured the group in my head. The fringe came from Minato. When I was creating Seiji I wanted his heritage to play a part so I initially gave him a shirt with one of Kyoto's beaches stylized across it. I mostly threw away that idea when I had the Saviors switch to their winter outfits and opted to put him in something with more swagger. I had a fondness for fur coats and thought of them as really cool on certain characters so giving one to Seiji was pretty logical as he was the 'cool' one of the team. Seiji's swords were just designs I always wanted to see but I could never draw. Evidently the fact that I couldn't draw explains why I'm writing a superhero book instead of having someone draw it for me.
Seiji's personality was largely the same but I had to create new reasons for his jerkiness behavior besides being a heir to a company. Most of this stuff is spoilers so I'll just say that Seiji's family is pretty messed up right now.
So where's Seiji headed now? Since this blog entry is going up the same day as chapter 13 I'm free to spoil the fact that the Seiji Association, the pride of Nakamura and Seiji, is gone. If there's two things Seiji takes pride in its his father, for making it in America, and his father's company. To the chagrin of everyone else this means he's very smug, I mean if you could erase anything from existence and was the son/daughter of one of the richest men in the world wouldn't you be a bit smug too? Now what if that was to all disappear?
We'll see how Seiji reacts.
Tl;dr: Seiji comes from a Bleach knock off and he's kind of an asshole.
