"I think I'm gonna add a new color to my hair." Taking a sip from her smoothie she brushed the radiant straight orange-red strands from her shoulder. After a thought or two, she added, "Maybe I'm gonna add silver streaks to it but I'm gonna ask Ryan first."
"Good idea, since he's the one that's gonna be seeing it all the time."
She rolled her blue eyes. "Haha very funny but it's my hair and I do whatever I want with it."
Rolling my eyes at her dramatic gestures, I stirred my chocolate smoothie.
Sarah has been my friend since my freshman year. She first befriended me to get close to Derek but after spending time with each other we became really close. Mostly, because she found out that he only dated older women so she just settled for me.
She and Ryan hooked up in our sophomore year and after a roller coaster of drama, they finally stayed together.
"........and Greek god."
Turning my attention back to her I asked, "Ah, repeat that."
"I was asking how are you and Greek God? Are you guys back to being a happy couple?"
Sighing, I sipped the cool liquid. "Yeah, for now until Ms. Hooks calls again."
She gave me a sympathetic look. "Oh, darling...." That look vanished into a brilliant smile. "At least, if his relationship with her gets any more serious then you could finally get a boyfriend."
Frowning, I stated matter of factly, "I don't want or need a boyfriend. I am quite fine being single."
She raised an eyebrow then gave me a stern look. "Single? Darling your far from being single."
Gripping my hands from across the table she looked into my eyes, her features softening. "I know that your brainwashed but we'll get through this."
Groaning, I snatched my hand from hers. "I'm not brainwashed."
She made a tsking sound with her tongue. "Of course you are. You know he doesn't allow other guys on campus to ask you out. Yet, he goes around screwing other girls or should I say, women, having short term relationships but you don't care, you still welcome him in your bed at night.
"But it's okay I understand he's a Greek God. Who wouldn't wanna be under his spell? Just be careful and when he gets serious with his cougar—"
"If they get serious," I grumbled.
Ignoring my comment she continued, "WHEN he gets serious with her and breaks your heart we'll go out and find you the perfect boyfriend to get over him."
Sinking back in my seat, I stated sarcastically, "Gee thanks."
"Your welcome." She smiles sweetly, definitely ignoring my tone, taking a sip of her drink. "You know what I think?"
Oh great! Why is it that everyone wants me to know what they are thinking? "No, not really."
"That's okay, I'm gonna tell you anyway. I think you should get a potential boyfriend. That way when Derek pulls the plug, it won't hurt that much."
Sighing aloud, I gulped down my beverage. "Thanks, Dr. Phil."
Laughing she turned her attention to her drink. Oh, how I adore her, even though times like these irritate the hell out of me. I know that there is truth in what she's saying.
Ever since we were old enough to date no one has ever asked me out. I learned how to be independent at a young age and I had Derek, so I didn't really care.
However, in the third form, I learned that the reason for my lack of dates was because no one dared to break Derek's rules or respected him too much to break the bro code.
When I first found out about his little scheming, I was furious. I mean, who did he think he was? I didn't want a boyfriend but that didn't mean he had the right to do what he did. So I didn't speak to him for a whole week. Even though, that hurt me as much as it did him. I wanted to punish him for his stupid actions.
Eventually, at the end of the week of torture, I had to start talking to him again. If I was being honest with myself, I never was upset that he ward off other guys. In fact, I was grateful. I was upset because he pretended and lied to me for years.
He learned his lesson and now he keeps me in the loop of all his little schemes and I allowed him to continue.
Yeah! I know how it looks. To be honest, being single allows me to stay focused more on my school work, myself, and my friends. So sue me but I'm quite happy. Maybe under all the independence, there is a little submissive quality there.
"Okay girl, let's go. Ryan's coming over later." She stood rampaging through her bag for her purse.
"I'll pay this time," I intervened on her search.
"Okay, no rebuttal from me," she laughed.

Chuckling to myself I paid the bill and followed her out the door.
