The crowded bus is noisy and irritable.
I know I must continue driving, no matter how much I want to be somewhere else.
“Brex! Stop the bus!” I hear from behind me.
“Shut up, Ash!” I say, keeping my eyes ahead of me.
The boys on this bus have been assholes the entire drive and I have no hope of discontinuing it.
“Brex, you’ve done enough driving today. I’ll take the wheel for a while.” Kai says from besides me.
“I’m fine,” I lie.
“It wasn’t a question. Let’s make a stop. It’s been long enough since the last break, and we should stop for lunch soon, anyway.”
I don’t stop. I know I should, but I should be on another bus heading the opposite direction, so here I am.
Minutes pass, and Kai must realize that I’m not stopping.
“Brex! You gotta stop. I don’t have any clue why you’re acting like this but it’s not you.”
At what he says, I pull over a little too fast.
“So what? You know me now?” I ask, slamming on the brakes and turning to look at him. I stand up. I take the collar of Kai’s shirt and pull his face up to mine.
“You. Don’t. Know. What. I’m. Like.” I lean my face closer to his, then slam my foot down, and let go of his shirt.
He yelps in pain.
“You wanna drive now?” He stands where he is, clutching his foot, but says nothing. “That’s what I thought.”
I sit down in my seat and realize the bus has gone quiet.
“Daaaang.” I barely hear someone whisper. I jump up from my seat and race to the middle of the bus.
“Brex, you gotta calm down.” The last person I wanted on this bus, is officially on this bus. His voice is too calm for me to handle.
