Lily's (point of view)
--------------------------------------
I take a deep breath and march through rhe doors of Supes.co. I have a job interview in thirty minutes. I arrived early because I did not want to take chances and we moved into this city recently.
My mom had to come to Crest Falls for her treatment. As mundanes we did not have any superpowers of our own. We had to rely on money to get the job done. And money in my home was also in short supply. We were not rich by any means. We just made enough to push through. My mom was a teacher who taught at kids with super powers at a local school. She was paid a normal wage. I took up a job as a waitress to pay for my college.
But all that changed, and I had to drop the idea of going to college and move to Crest Falls with my mom for her cancer treatment. We used my money I saved for college for paying off some medical bills. But bills kept pouring every month and so I had to find a job, which is why I am looking at the huge glassdoors where I will be giving my interview.
With no prior experience, I realized I would not be given a bigger role. But, I was determined. I had to get the job. I have bills to pay and my mom to look after.
Crest Falls was a huge city. The world was divided into three factions- the superheroes, supervillains and the mundanes. Superheroes and supervillains were always at odds with eat other. The former dried to defend while the later tried to attack and cause mayhem. And we mundanes were just ordinary beings. We did not have any special powers. We were the scapegoats.
I had an interview at Supes.co. A multi-million dollar company started by Kade Drayen, who is now the CEO. I konw this because he appeared in every gossip column of newspapers. No one knew if he was a superhero or a supervillain. There were rumors of course. But, not facts. Every superhero and supervillain were masked. You encountered them but you did not know the man or woman behind the mask. They blended in with us like ordinary people. They were supee caeful with their powers.
Supes.Co was mainly a reserach company. They researched on how ordinary beings got super powers. Their main product was producing serums for strengtheing the superhuman abilities of people. If a super had the ability to fly. Their serum could enhance the flying ability by making the super fly for extended periods of time or even at higher altitudes.
Their serums were the rage now and that is how it became a big company. All supers were buying serums to strengthen or enhance their powers. The serums did not magically give powers to someone with no special abilities. It simply enhanced the already existing powers. Something similar to how a catalyst would do.
I was now waiting in line for my interview.
"Miss Summers, it is your turn. Please go in through that door.", the receptioniat calls out.
I nervously make my way to the door.
CEO - Kade Drayden
The plaque on the door reads.
I open the door to the room. A tall man is standing, facing the windows. His hair balck as a raven's tied neatly as a pony tail at the base of his neck in a rather masculine way. His hands folded behind him. His back to me.
"Have a seat.", his rich thick velvety voice echoes across the near-empty room, save for some sparse furniture which included the desk, two chairs and two sofas near the walls. I take the seat across him.
He then turns around. His glances at me. His ocean-green eyes arresting and making me catch my breath.
"Why do you want to work for Supes.co and be honest girl.", he asks abruptly.
No introduction, no friendly greeting, just a direct straight-forward question.
I take a moment to speak. I open my mouth to answer.
"I don't have all day, girl.", he rudely answers.
My own anger ignites at his offhanded and contemptuous behavior. How dare he look down at me, just because he is the high and mighty CEO.
"My name is Lily Summers. I suggest you use it. And to answer your question, I want to work at Supes.co because I need to pay bills for my mother's treatment. I have no prior work experience, but I am smart. I learn fast. I was at the top of my class in my high school.", I blurt out, my emotions raging, not allowing me to filter the thoughts in my brain when speaking out. I stop realizing that I messed up. And, I mentally made up my mind that I would not be getting the job.
He looks up at me. His green eyes hard and steely. His jaw tightens, like he can't believe someone can stand up to him.
"You are a mundane. Aren't you?"
Before I answer, he speaks out.
"Of course, you must be. You are not anyone special, Miss Summers. You are easily replaceable in this world. The fact that you think you can be anything at all in this world is highly hilarious.", he cruelly presses on.
"Are you a super Mr. Drayden?", I ask.
"This is your interview. Not mine. I ask the questions around here.", he smoothly deflects the question.
" Well, I think you are a coward, Mr. Drayden. You hide behind your wealth and fame. It seems to me you are worse than me- a mere mundane.", I say standing up.
He reaches me. He is close to me now. Our bodies a mere few inches apart. He looks down on me. A 6-ft towering mass of muscle and anger radiating from him.
"You overstep your bounds, Miss Summers. You will find that, you would not want me as your enemy.", he sys softly, but I know the violence he is trying to keep in restraint.
I should feel scared but suprisingly, I am not. The stress of the past few months have been building up. Moving to a new city and taking care of my mother have taken a toll on me. I know for sure I won't get the job anyway. I have nothing to lose. I am not scared. I just vent out all the frustration I am feeling at the moment.
"I am not afraid of you, Mr. Drayden. You are just a big bully. You don't scare me. And for the record, I still think you are a coward.", I reply back just as calmly as him.
"Why you little-", as he says, I can feel the temperature around me increase. Suddenly, I feel as if I am standing next to a furnace.
Am I feeling faint? Did I catch a fever? Was it because of something I ate yesterday?
But just then, I feel the air around me come back to normal. The hot feeling fading. I have no clue what just happened.
Kade is still menacingly infront of me.
"You are hired.", he declares.
"I do- don't understand."
"Are you stupid as well? Do you want the job or not?"
"Yes, Mr Drayden."
" I will hire you as an intern. Talk to Miss Hayes
and she will fill you up with all the details."
"Miss Hayes?"
He looks heavenward as if trying to keep his patience in check.
"Yes Miss Hayes, the one who let you in to my office."
Ohh.. the receptionist.
"Alright, Thank you Mr. Drayden", I say and step back, going towards the door.
" Your performance will be assessed and by the end of the quarter we will see whether you will joining us full-time.", he says in a matter-of-fact way.
"I won't let you down, Mr.Drayden", I say with sincerety.
I go out of the office and get in touch with Miss. Hayes. After, I get all the details. I go back home happy. I have no idea how I got the job or why I got it. But, I am damn well not going to mess it up. I will give my best.
