“Who do you think it is?” Demi asked.copyright protection14PENANAC9cURDGSHm

            “The Scholar.” I suggested.copyright protection14PENANABWPpP9YR83

“Deon, she wouldn’t come back.” Demi said. “That wouldn’t make sense. It has to be someone else.” We made out way back through the bookshelves, following the Scholar’s dust trail. We were back in the entryway, Demi peeped out of the door.copyright protection14PENANAMBTuP0R2AJ

            “Who is it?” I asked.copyright protection14PENANAGdTS7KwOCe

Without an answer, my companion opened the door. “Themis?” before us stood the blind goddess of justice. She was wielding a sword along with a set of scales.copyright protection14PENANAadaZD08CSh

“One was taken, one is deserved.” Themis raised her sword to my neck. “Justice must be served.” The blind goddess swung her sword forcing me to duck and roll back into the room.copyright protection14PENANAFESy9Iz0K9

“What the blindfold!” Demi shouted.copyright protection14PENANAKrmDkuoQi0

I was shocked. Themis had always been an ally. She was one of us, she had originally deemed us just and worthy of becoming New Olympians in the first place. Why would she attack us now?copyright protection14PENANA5segrRgAu9

But I didn’t have time to ask questions, Themis was backing us towards the fire pit, and we were unarmed. “Demi, the fire.” I shoute rushing towards the advancing Themis. Demeter took advantage of my distraction and hurried to turn the flames off. I barreled into Themis, and tried to yank her sword away. Themis knocked me in the side of the head with her set of scales, and held the sword just out of my reach.copyright protection14PENANAR9NKHXshXd

“Deonosaur!” Demi shouted from the wall. Themis had swung her sword, right for my chest. But the blade never touched me. It hovered over my shoulder, quivering as Themis struggled to force it down on me.copyright protection14PENANAqIENmYhKPA

“Justice must be served.” Themis muttered.copyright protection14PENANALU2ZbuRr4l

She couldn’t attack me. I realized. “What the hell is your problem?” I asked. “I thought we were on the same team.”copyright protection14PENANABWupGcm9tk

            “Lord Dionysus?”copyright protection14PENANAmU21IoZZ8P

            “Yeah.”copyright protection14PENANAATJCTV6Kmb

“Forgive me.” Themis took a step back. “I did not know it was you.”copyright protection14PENANA6Y7BnOOJXh

            “You couldn’t recognize…” I glanced at her blindfold, “…our voices?”copyright protection14PENANA3kc5lUulUC

“I apologize profusely.” Themis bowed her head. “Lady Hestia sent me here, I wrongly assumed it was for a fight.”copyright protection14PENANAauwU7qPdac

“Hestia? Hestia sent you?” I asked.copyright protection14PENANAohawSxlGgj

“You almost shanked us.” Demi exclaimed.copyright protection14PENANAYkDapZ5Uk0

“She told me the two of you were here and in trouble.” Themis said. “I’ve been waiting for you to arrive.”copyright protection14PENANAxvv3pCtePE

“If you were waiting for us, why did you attack?” I asked.copyright protection14PENANAreVBLO96up

“You are not the first visitors.” Themis said. “I have been trying to protect this place while I waited. I had no idea it was actually the both of you.”copyright protection14PENANAqtJ3E93K4n

I looked at Demi. “You just missed the trouble.” I informed blind justice. “The Scholar just left.”copyright protection14PENANAKBSfEiR8xH

“Let us hope she stays gone.” Themis nodded.copyright protection14PENANAMYWIAIxJP2

            “Do you know her?” I asked.copyright protection14PENANA9fvTj93mT7

“I have not heard that name, the previous intruders did not speak to me.” Themis reported. “It would be logical that she is the very same person I’ve been fighting off.”copyright protection14PENANAKEIDUnVMvt

“She didn’t speak to you? She didn’t have a message for you?” I asked.copyright protection14PENANAuirq129yLY

“My sword seemed to dissuade any conversations.”copyright protection14PENANAAVe6OxgRT9

“Deon, she said Hestia sent her.” Demi pulled on my sleeve. “Hestia sent her here to find us.”copyright protection14PENANAYDOHgI4cuA

“That is correct.” Themis nodded. “The Lady Hestia asked for me to stay here.”copyright protection14PENANAFYT7pVaytV

“So you’ve seen her?” Demi asked. “You’ve seen Hestia, you must know where she is! You can take us to her.”copyright protection14PENANAx4RLaFirwc

            “Certainly.” Themis said.copyright protection14PENANABvQpd78hjC

            “Are you serious?” I asked.copyright protection14PENANASZBM70Hhza

“Yes.” Themis nodded. “It is my purpose here, Hestia asked that I be here with to await her return.”copyright protection14PENANAd7f4TqJbRg

            “Her return?” I asked.copyright protection14PENANAosMeSZl0hF

“That means she’s coming here!” Demi shouted. “Deon we did it! Deon we found her. That’ll show Deli. Sometimes smarts are everything.”copyright protection14PENANACaFeWMfD4O

“When is she coming back?” I asked.copyright protection14PENANAOhW3lPu51m

“Should be soon, now that you two are here.”copyright protection14PENANAmpO8EH80Hp

“Sweet Justice, how I love you.” I couldn’t help but grin. Hestia was safe, and she was coming here. Relief filled me, Hestia was safe crisis averted. Then a nagging feeling bubbled up out of my stomach. None of this explained the Scholar, or how Adele had acted after talking with the Oracle. I may not have been able to draw the same conclusions as her from the talk with the Oracle, but I was positive she would never overreact to something. If Adele needed to see Kara so desperately, things were only just starting. Regardless, it would be good to have Hestia back safe and sound. Before things start going south.copyright protection14PENANAFkzlyw7N9b

“One was taken, one is deserved.” Themis was carefully placing her set of scales on the floor near the hearth. She set about evening the scales. “Justice is balance.”copyright protection14PENANACXty1PovUp

“Oh my god.” Demi smirked. “I can’t wait to rub all of this in Iris’ stupid face. She picked the wrong Olympian. Now she’s going to miss out on us saving Hestia. HA! I bet she’ll freak, stupid rainbows.”copyright protection14PENANARgPGptnxt5

“Justice must be restored. One is taken, one is deserved.” Themis was now kneeling in front of her scales, facing the door.copyright protection14PENANAX9pxuY3CLc

“Themis?” I approached her. “What are you talking about?” Uneasiness started to creep into my mind.copyright protection14PENANAOo9hXb6lG1

“Hestia was taken.” Themis started to explain.copyright protection14PENANAKyizfH3Dfx

“And a new Hestia is deserved?” I cut her off.copyright protection14PENANAIcG7Jb5MNR

Themis thought it over. “Justice would be served. Balance the scales. Justice is impartial and unfeeling. Justice is fairness and equilibrium.”copyright protection14PENANAZBf9SckZy1

“Whoa, what?” I asked. “A new Hestia? But you said she’s coming here?”copyright protection14PENANA0iAiSP0Wsf

“Replacement?” Demi shouted. “You can’t replace Hestia!”copyright protection14PENANAtas9ibloY8

“We replaced the Olympians.” Themis pointed out. “Gods get replaced when they disappear. Hestia has disappeared, she needs to be replaced. Balance is part of justice.”copyright protection14PENANAfYKv7DIrCg

It made me angry. “How, do we just replace a god?” I asked.copyright protection14PENANAtDz3VsSWol

“I can see if they are just.” She nodded as she explained. “Then they must be taken to the throne room on New Olympus, there they can assume the title.”copyright protection14PENANAbRwD1PPmdO

“I don’t think see is the right word there.” Demi muttered, staring at Themis’ blindfold. “You lied to us, you said Hestia was coming here now.”copyright protection14PENANAvtMfZUSHmv

“I did not lie.” Themis said. “That would not be just.”copyright protection14PENANAYP8yS40L0p

“But…if Hestia is coming here, why are you talking about a replacement?” Demi demanded. Themis was quiet. “Deon, tell her to stop this. Tell her we aren’t going to go through with this. Tell her we aren’t replacing Hestia.”copyright protection14PENANA7bhDPjsFGG

I bit my lip. I wanted to be on Demi’s side. I wanted to yell. I wanted to burn every book in that library. I wanted to throw Themis in the pool. I wanted to erupt. But I couldn’t. I thought of Adele, what would she do in this situation? I thought about how she had sent us away, seemingly giving up on Hestia to return to Kara and the others. She would only do that if something major was happening…something more important than finding Hestia, our Hestia the original one. But for her to give up on that, and prioritize something else instead…I knew it was an example I had to follow. I knew what Adele would do here. “Themis is right. I think Hestia is gone, at least the one we knew anyways.” It hurt me to admit it. “The Old Olympians left this world…maybe Hestia did now too.”copyright protection14PENANAubahr9bkRx

            “Deon…”copyright protection14PENANAPQmYof2p02

“We have to accept it Demi.”copyright protection14PENANAP7e6L4peJ6

            “But…”copyright protection14PENANAUeh4vJdG35

I took a deep breath. “I don’t want this. But I don’t think we can, or should, stop it.” Demeter’s head swung down, dropping to look at the floor. I saw her ball her hands into fists. Without a word she burst through the door.copyright protection14PENANAeTVBRkQTJR

“Demi wait!” I hurried after her. “We have to stay together. We need to work together to do this. Besides it’s not safe, the Scholar could come back at any minute.”copyright protection14PENANAWyZaFKe5YY

“No.” she was storming off down the hallway. “I won’t give up on Hestia, I don’t care what you or Themis say. She’s not gone, we don’t need to replace her…and I don’t need you to prove it.”copyright protection14PENANAbTdtXIcbpg

I started to go after her, but Themis spoke, “Let her go.”copyright protection14PENANAhDace1w5Vg

“The last thing we need right now is more missing gods.” I told the blind goddess of justice. She didn’t answer “Fine.”copyright protection14PENANAWRPV2uFhAE

“Khione and Iris will help me.” Demeter shouted back at us. “They won’t give up on a friend so easily.”copyright protection14PENANAgLxtevcrGB

“She must do what she believes is right and just.” Themis muttered looking at the wall.copyright protection14PENANAHXfRatTHyP

“I’m over here.” I gently turned her so that the blind goddess was facing the right way.copyright protection14PENANAXvHNqJi61S

“The ends justify the means, so long as the end is just.” Themis continued. “And an end can be just by any means.”copyright protection14PENANAKiDiLSNXku

“What are you talking about?” I demanded.copyright protection14PENANAz1sOTCiMjR

“Hestia shall be here soon.”copyright protection14PENANAChmj5M2nT4

I frowned. “Demi’s young, she’s immature, and she has no idea what she is up against. She shouldn’t be out there alone. She could get in trouble, or hurt.”copyright protection14PENANAfDmTV8MI66

“You heard her, Khione and Iris will be with her. The three of them together should be alright.”copyright protection14PENANAdF8Fu1hMOB

“You have to realize she’ll be going after the Scholar, whoever that was.” I said. “She’ll be in danger. She’ll be getting into trouble that none of us can even comprehend yet.”copyright protection14PENANADqT0JYMMmF

“The person you call the Scholar has repeatedly been visiting this place.” Themis said. “I think Lady Demeter is safer away from here.”copyright protection14PENANARBjdvfmiYs

            “Still.” I said.copyright protection14PENANAob8wQDy8pn

“Our task is set before us.” Themis said. “But you must do what you deem just. You alone live in your mind. You must do whatever affords you peace of mind. You must make your own judgment calls my Lord.”copyright protection14PENANAK3NE3xDQkZ

“I think you just made this decision harder.” I muttered. Themis merely shrugged. What do I do? I couldn’t just let Demi disappear, not after finding out we may have lost Hestia for good. Demi and Adele were those I was closest with, I couldn’t just knowingly abandon Demi. I had to go after her. I had to stop her. “Themis, I’m sorry.”copyright protection14PENANAwbAQp65Mo3

The blind goddess merely nodded. “I hold no grudges. Do what you feel is just.”copyright protection14PENANAfMfnj60Seq

I nodded before I realized Themis couldn’t see that. “Thank you.” I said quickly. I darted out of the door and hurried down the hallway. I rapidly slammed on the elevator call button.copyright protection14PENANAfZu3DxBgnV

I had to catch Demi before she disappeared. I hoped against hope that Iris was talking her time responding. I would never catch Demi if she stepped on a rainbow. I burst outside. “DEMI!” I shouted. I looked around. I couldn’t see her. “DEMI!” I ran towards the nearest intersection and hurriedly scanned the other side of the street. There was no sign of her, Demi must have disappeared by now.copyright protection14PENANAfU7QKxXPkl

“Oink.” Someone tugged at my sleeve. I turned and saw a small pig attempting to eat my clothes.copyright protection14PENANATz88XseYkt

“Vestido!” the animal’s owner yanked the feasting pre-pork chop away from the fabric. “I’m so sorry.” She muttered quickly. “I’ll…I can fix that.”copyright protection14PENANAoztSD6qenO

I glanced at my sleeve, there were only some small bite marks. “It’s no big deal.” I muttered. “Nice pet.”copyright protection14PENANAaDIhtsPri9

“Thanks.” The girl smiled. I smiled and nodded at her. I started to walk away. I should probably just return to Themis, I didn’t have any chance of catching Demi. At least with the blind lady I could find something I was looking for.copyright protection14PENANAMcIVkFnzDI

“Umm…actually excuse me.” I turned and saw the pig girl approached me.copyright protection14PENANA32iwVVDl90

“No it’s totally ok.” I said. “This is an old shirt anyways. I don’t mind. You don’t need to apologize.”copyright protection14PENANA9jERB8krzD

“Oh…umm. I appreciate that, but I was actually hoping you could give me some directions. I think I’m lost.” She explained. The girl began digging around in her pockets. “I’m not from around her, but this lady gave me a job.” She pulled out a piece of paper. “I’m supposed to go to this address.”copyright protection14PENANAAlPjhaZEJC

Before I could tell her that I didn’t know my way around. She dropped the paper into my hand. I read it. I froze.copyright protection14PENANAnNFFjAAXVK

“I don’t know the name of the company or anything like that.” The girl added. “But the lady’s name was, Ms. Hearth. I think at least.”copyright protection14PENANAY53CXFKh6j

“Hearth?” I asked looking up. The address was the same one Adele had written down for Demi and I. This address was for the apartment that Themis was waiting in right now. “Someone named Hearth sent you to this address?” I asked.copyright protection14PENANAUHFK0XUZCE

The girl looked at me strangely. “Do you know her?”copyright protection14PENANACZrhELSeIN

Hearth. I thought it over in my head. No way. I didn’t know how to react. I didn’t know what to say.copyright protection14PENANAYGT2jQH37O

“Do you know where that place is?” The girl held her pig a little tighter.copyright protection14PENANAn2v3Nv0HvD

My voice returned. “I just came from there.” I admitted. I couldn’t help it. I was looking this girl up and down. Her? Could she really be?copyright protection14PENANAl7CMpgxhvg

“Seriously?” She seemed skeptical.copyright protection14PENANA4tXXwgOejV

Hearth…Hestia was the goddess of hearths.copyright protection14PENANA2HYxLL3Msy

“Hello?”copyright protection14PENANApOG1A5h8mN

Could she be?copyright protection14PENANAprgmpMCd0W

“Dude seriously.”copyright protection14PENANA93D7BpTEbm

Oh my gods.copyright protection14PENANAdAbTCMZUUl

“Are you ok?”copyright protection14PENANAHjMYGcLipM

“I’m Deon.” I offered my hand. “I work with Hestia, I mean Ms. Hearth. I guess you’re one of us now?”copyright protection14PENANAeyPSGqiA5t

She cautiously took my hand. “Heidi.” She muttered. “So…you can take me there?”copyright protection14PENANAXj48dHUcBP

“Yeah.” I nodded. I turned around. “This way.” I kept glancing at the girl.copyright protection14PENANAyj9lhPx27X

“Umm…can you tell me about the job? What exactly do you do?” she asked. “The lady made me commit without letting me know anything.”copyright protection14PENANAOmwDed4wNa

“I’m not sure I’m the person to explain it.” I admitted. “But they did that to me too, before I started.”copyright protection14PENANA0Ku5THMNUn

“So, what can you tell me?” Heidi asked me.18Please respect copyright.PENANAjP4Ptj2xQP
