Madalyn starts crying at the mention of Kora's name.
"H- how is my baby?" she manages to ask.
"I - She's in pretty bad shape. I tried to get her to leave with me but she said that her work wasn't finished yet." I sigh as I try to hold back my tears.
"What does that mean?" Madalyn says more to herself. She's trying to process what I'm saying, but I don't think I can tell her all of what happened with Kora.
"I - I'm not sure," I lie. In that moment, I feel a pair of eyes on me. I look up to see Alpha Nate staring at me with a curious expression on his face. I'm sure he can tell that I'm lying.
"I- I need some air," Madalyn says as she gets up to leave. Alpha Nate's mother, Lillian, walks out with her.
An awkward silence hangs among us once they leave the room. No one makes any attempt at small talk. Gamma Roddrick leaves without saying a word, leaving me, Alpha Nate and Lucas to sit in silence.
"Well, this is boring. Y'all are way too doom and gloom for my liking. I'm gonna hit the bar or something," he says as he wiggles his eyebrows suggestively. I roll my eyes at his attempt to lighten the mood, but smile regardless at how idiotic he can be sometimes.
As soon as Lucas leaves the room, Alpha Nate is the first to break the silence, "why didn't you tell Madalyn the truth?"
"There are some things that a mother shouldn't know," is all I can say.
I make an attempt to get out of the bed but The Alpha stops me, "what do you think you're doing? Are you crazy?"
"Listen here, asshole. If you haven't noticed, I'm a vampire. I'm healed. I'm leaving. End of story," I say with as much attitude as I can.
"So why didn't you leave with Lucas when he was here?" he asks with a smug look on his face. What he doesn't realize is that I have a plan, and I'm not about to tell him or anyone what I'm up to.
I sigh, "I just need some air. I need to think things through. Can you at least give me that?" I try my best to fake innocence but he doesn't fall for it.
"Well, if that's the case then you won't have an issue with me joining you? Ya know, to get to know my mate," he argues.
"I'd prefer you not follow me," I say honestly. Because, let's be real; what I'm planning is a suicide mission. It's something that I don't want to get anyone involved in especially when death is the final outcome.
After a few seconds of silence, I give in, "okay, we can go for a walk together. Just let me shower. I really need to relax my muscles."
--
After locking the door to the bathroom, I quickly turn the shower on. I look at myself in the mirror, shocked at what I see - I look ragged as hell. But a shower is the last thing on my mind. I quickly wash my face and change into a different set of clothing. I open the window and climb out of it. As my feet hit the ground, I'm faced with a smug Lucas. His arms are crossed over his chest but he's got a shit-eating grin on his face.
"What are you doing here?" I whisper yell at him in frustration.
"I knew you'd pull this shit. I just wasn't sure when," he laughs.
"Keep your fucking voice down. The Alpha is still in there," I still whisper.
"Follow me," Lucas says as he sprints away.
I follow him without looking back, leaving my mate behind. It will probably be the last time I ever see him, but it's a risk I'm willing to take.
