"Nathan! Get your ass over here right now!" I sigh as I hear my mother yell through our mind-link.
"Sorry, Stacy, but this'll have to wait. Duty calls," I say to the beautiful bombshell that I have eagerly waiting for me on my bed.
"But, Nate, you promised!" she pouts.
I rub my forehead in irritation. It seems like I've been doing that a lot these days. Since the turn of an era, things haven't been the same. We've been fighting to stay unnoticed by the humans. Unfortunately, we're unable to kill them so we hide to stay alive. All I've been thinking about for the last two years is the safety of my pack. But my own mother is making it harder than it needs to be. She insists that the only way to save the pack is for me to mate with another werewolf. Someone to lead the pack as its true Luna. Right now, my mother is acting as a temporary Luna until I find my mate. But what she doesn't know is that a Luna is the last of my concerns. She hasn't heard the whispers of war yet, and once she does, she's going to force my hand.
"Coming, mother," I say through our mind-link.
As I enter my office, I find my mother cross-armed and angry, "where were you?"
"That is none of your business, mother. But if you must know, I've been out looking for a Luna for this pack; something you place as a higher priority than the pack's safety."
"Oh don't start that nonsense with me, Nathan, you know that the packs safety is our first priority. But what you fail to realize is its interchangeability with the Luna. One of which our pack does not have, mind you. With a Luna by your side, the pack's strength increases, and with an increased strength comes a greater defense against the humans. How long do you think it'll be before they find out about us and where we are?"
"Mother, I understand where you're coming from, but you've got to admit, the humans can be quite stupid sometimes. They won't find out about us. Your witch friend made sure of that, remember."
My mother sighs in defeat, she always does, "just make sure you're doing the right thing, Nathan. I don't want anyone to get hurt. And please, for the love of the gods, don't you dare mate with a werewolf who's mated to another. You're 26, don't do anything foolish, okay? That's all I'm asking of you. We don't need the fates breathing down our necks with your recklessness."
And with that, she leaves my office.

"Alpha! We've got something," I hear my Gamma's gruff voice through the mind-link. I'm out of the door within seconds. If something is wrong, I need to be there. I head towards the border of my pack's territory, it's concealed by the woods surrounding our pack home. Thank the gods, that my father had the right mind to buy this land as part of a human investment when he did; not only do the other werewolf packs acknowledge our territory, but to human eyes, the woods and its surrounding land is owned by a wealthy businessman, and is considered private property.
As I get closer to my Gamma, I smell something vile that makes me stop in my tracks. The closer I get, the more pungent the smell gets. When I finally see my Gamma, I notice something, no someone, in his arms. I look closer. It's a girl, and she looks to be in pretty bad shape.
"What the hell happened to her?" I ask while trying my best to block out the smell. But it's no use. Being a werewolf means that all our senses are heightened and what humans feel, smell, hear, taste, and see, is only a fraction of what we sense. So it goes without saying that this smell is pretty damn repulsive.
"You get used to it, Alpha. But look at her closely."
I take a closer look at her matted dark hair. Her eyes are closed so I can't see the color of them. The dirt on her face tells me she's been out there for a lot longer than she should have. Her body looks like it hasn't seen food in a few weeks. There's a black substance all over her clothes, that must be what the smell is coming from. But what catches my eyes are the two fangs protruding from her mouth.
"Vampire." It's the only word I could muster up at the time. Seeing her in this condition is unnerving. It looks like she's been tortured.
"What do we do, Alpha?"
Putting aside our werewolf/vampire differences, I make a quick decision to help her. What kind of Alpha would I be if I don't show a semblance of humility to a supernatural in need.
"Take her to Martin's private room," I command, "and don't mention this to anyone. Not until we have answers."
I take one last look at the mystery girl before I mind-link our pack doctor and explain the situation to him.
Danger has come and I'm not about to back down.
