I watch the mystery girl as she clutches her stomach, curled up in a fetal position. She's been like this all week. The only time she makes any sort of move is when she's screaming in pain or vomiting that vile substance - we have yet to figure out what it is. She's gotten weaker and thinner. She looks like she's withering away - dying a slow, agonizing death. It hurts to watch her like this. I'm not sure why it hurts so much. I don't even know her. But seeing her like this makes me see red. I want to kill whoever did this to her. I feel like I should be her protector in some way but I can't do anything about it. I feel numb seeing what she's going through. No one should be going through something like this.
My thoughts are interrupted by the sound of footsteps outside the room. I hear two pairs of feet hit the ground. I'm standing within seconds, ready to attack anyone who shouldn't be here. I've been, embarrassingly, on my guard since this girl showed up. The door opens and I see my mother walk in with who I'm assuming is her witch friend. I relax a bit when I see them but I'm still tense.
"Calm down, boy," the witch says, "we'll save her."
The witch looks down at the girl and gasps, "Riley," she says shocked to see the vampire in this condition.
"You know her?" my mother asks.
The witch clears her throat, "she's my- she's an acquaintance."
I frown. There's something more to this.
The witch walks up to Riley, and takes her limp hand, "oh dear, what have you been through?" she says as her eyes turn a shade of lilac. After a few seconds she's crying as she begins to shake profusely. My hand reaches out to touch her but my mother stops me, "don't touch her while she's having a vision. It could be dangerous for all of us."
"What do you mean?" I ask.181Please respect copyright.PENANADkJZvA1ckz
"When a witch is seeing into the past of someone and is disturbed or interrupted, the inflictions of the person's point of view gets transferred through the vision and onto the witch in real time. It's a scary thing to witness, let alone experience."
"You've experienced it?"
My mother looks at me with a somber expression, "there are things about me and my past that you don't know, Nate. And I'd like to keep it that way."
Before I could respond, the witch comes back to our reality, "I- I need to sit down for a moment."
My mother quickly moves her to a chair to calm down while I grab her a bottle of water to sip on.
"This poor vampire has gone through something horrendous. But I believe I can help her. She's not going to be the same vampire she once was. I can't stress this enough, Alpha, but she's going to need as much help and support around her as possible. She's a hard ass so she won't admit it. What is she to you, Alpha Nathan?"
I wasn't prepared for that question as I stutter, trying to find an answer, "I- " I'm interrupted by my Gamma who enters the room. "Great fucking timing," I mind-link him. He gives me a quizzical look, but stays quiet.181Please respect copyright.PENANAmjcZnQjWBv
The witch starts preparing materials for a spell that could possibly help cure Riley. She takes candles, a bottle of gray liquid, a spell book, some bird feathers, and a vial of blood out of her bag. She asks my mother to light the candles and to place them around Riley's bed. She asks my Gamma to switch off the lights as she sprinkles some of the gray liquid over Riley's body. Her spell book begins to float in front of her as she recites a spell from memory. The book opens to the page of the spell she's going to use. As she reads the spell her eyes turn to a violet color. She motions for my mother to take the vial of blood and bird feathers. My mother steps into the circle of candles and places a feather in each of Riley's hands, one on her stomach, one on her forehead and two on her legs. She then slides a bit of Riley's hospital gown down to the top of her breasts, and draws a symbol on her chest with the blood. It looks like a crescent moon. She steps back out of the circle once she's done. I hand her a paper towel to wipe the blood off of her fingers. The witch continues chanting but this time blood trickles down her nose. As she comes to the end of the spell, she faints. The book falls to the floor and the candles are blown out by a breeze. My Gamma turns the light on and my mother rushes to the witch's side. 181Please respect copyright.PENANAUVFlkfoIDh
I stare at Riley as I see her begin to twitch. Her eyes slowly open. It takes her a few seconds to gather herself, but when she does, she's on alert and ready to attack.
"Riley," the witch whispers.181Please respect copyright.PENANA5DiulJI5yU
Riley's attention is diverted towards the witch, "Madalyn," she replies hoarsely.181Please respect copyright.PENANAWkHIbDtTxE
But the only thing I can pay attention to at the moment is the fact that my wolf acknowledges Riley as my mate.
