Roddrick and I walk up to the East of the huge surrounding iron gates. It's the same gate I remember when I escaped. I made sure to memorize my route, regardless of how weak I was at the time, so that I could come back for Kora. It's been too long. A lot longer that I initially anticipated. But with our plan, and the others carrying out their plans, I'm sure we'll get Kora out safely and put an end to this damn treaty that we as supernaturals had nothing to do with. I also make sure that I have my gleam up so that I wouldn't be detected. I motion for Roddrick to show me the charmed ring around his pinky finger. It should work just like a vampire's gleam - Kora had given it to me when I had first turned into a vampire and couldn't properly control my gleam.
"You sure about this, Luna? It's risky. Even for me," Roddrick says concerned.
"It needs to be done. Kora is my best friend. And as selfish as this sounds, I don't think I could live this life without my best friend by my side," I say as I turn away from Roddrick and look beyond the gates before I continue, "she saved me. It's time I returned the favor."
I hear Roddrick sigh beside me before he says, "I understand. And as much as I respect you as my Luna, I have to tell you that what we're about to do is bat-shit crazy."
All I do is laugh as I jump over the gate. Roddrick follows suite. We crouch down behind some bushes which gives us a view of the door we're planning on entering through. There are two guards posted at the door, and I'm assuming at every door. Roddrick motions towards the guards. It takes me a few tries to understand what he wants me to do, much to our chagrin. It's at this moment that I wish I let the Alpha mate with me, that way Roddrick and I could use that mind-link werewolves have. It definitely would have come in handy right about now.
I push that thought aside as I manipulate my gleam to let out a faint scent of my vampire; enough for the two guards to identify it but not enough for it to reach the entirety of our surroundings. Roddrick nods and I stand up and walk towards the guards. They stand on high alert as I approach them. I notice a device on their belts making a noise as I get closer. They both reach for their weapons.
"Do any of you lovely boys know where a girl could get a drink around here?" I say flirtatiously. But before either of them could answer, Roddrick is behind them and breaks the neck of the one in front of him. Before he could get to the other guard, the guard reacts and shoots at Roddrick but misses. Roddrick quickly uses his werewolf strength and breaks the guards arms which results in an agonizing scream. I quickly take the fallen gun and shoot the guard in the head and the screaming stops.
Roddrick and I look at each other in silence before he says, "well, if they weren't aware of us before, they sure as hell are aware of us now."
I sigh as I look down at the two dead guards at our feet.
"We better take their guns with us," I say as I hand Roddrick the gun in my hand. I bend down to get the other gun from the other guard.
"Might as well make it an entrance to remember," Roddrick says to me with a wink.
Before I could respond, he kicks the door open and leads the way inside. It's dark and musty like I remember it to be. It's supposed to be an asylum that was abandoned in the 1900s because of the illegal experiments that were conducted here all those years ago. But since The Truth formed, I'm pretty sure they've used this building as their refuge away from others so that they could conduct similar experiments under the guise of 'saving' the humans.
Something doesn't seem right. It's too quite and we have yet to see more guards. Where are The Truth's members? Why don't we see the other supernaturals being experimented on? Do they know we're here? But why would they hide from us when it would be more logical to capture us? None of this makes any sense at all.
We walk down a staircase that leads us to the basement. It's where I remember being kept. I make my way towards my once temporary torture chamber. It looks and smells just as bad as I remember it being. Roddrick stands behind me and squeezes my shoulder for support. I try to keep my emotions locked up tight. This isn't about me. This is about freeing Kora and all the supernaturals captured by The Truth. This is about survival. It's about revenge. It's for our own sanity. Our freedom.
My thoughts are interrupted by a soft weeping. I look to Roddrick and he nods. We both walk towards the sound with our guns aimed in front of us. As we walk closer to where the sound is coming from, I notice the similarities between this place and the place Kora was chained to in my dream. Roddrick suddenly stops in front of me and he drops his gun. He looks like he's in shock.
Before I could say anything, he mutters the word "mate" with absolute anger and hatred. There's so much venom behind the one word that I have to take a step back. My eyes travel to who he's referring to, and that's when my eyes go wide because the person in front of us is none other than Kora herself.
She looks up weakly at the sound of Roddrick's voice and softly chuckles to herself.
"I knew you'd come," she says before she passes out.
I try to run to get to her, but Roddrick stops me by placing his arm in front of me.
"I'll do it," he mutters with a clenched jaw.
He takes his jacket off as he walks up to Kora and carefully breaks the chains that are holding her up. She falls limply into his arms as he places his jacket around her to cover up her exposed body.
"I'll look for the others," I whisper as I leave Roddrick to get Kora out safely.
I use my vampire speed to look through each room and cell but come up with nothing. There's no one here anymore. What the hell happened? Why did they abandon this place? It doesn't make sense.
I stop in front of the only door I need to look through before meeting Roddrick and Kora outside. A shiver runs down my back. What is behind this door? Why has a sense of dread washed over me?
I reach for the door and try to pull it open.
It doesn't open.
I try to push it open.
It doesn't open.
What the hell?
I take a deep breath and use my vampire strength to pull the door open.
It works a bit too well because I accidentally break the door off of its hinges.
But I don't care because the smell is what gets to me first. All I can do is gag. The smell is so pungent that my eyes begin to water.
I wipe the tears away from my eyes and notice the flies around me and the maggots on the floor. It's too dark to see anything in the room so I take my phone out of my pocket and shine my torch light into the room.
What I see is a thing nightmares are made of...
I see tens of mutilated corpses. There could even be hundreds of corpses here. They're unrecognizable. They're all in different stages of decomposition. Who knows how long they've been here for. I can't believe what I'm seeing. I hold my nose close with my hands so I don't accidentally breathe in the pungent smell again, but to my dismay, my eyes begin to tear. I need to get out of here quickly. But just as I'm about to walk away, something catches my eye. I shine my light closer to it. I lose control of my legs and fall to the floor.
What.
The.
Hell.
I see a tattoo on a hand that's laying on top of what looks like burnt werewolf fur; the same tattoo that represents a member of The Truth. I quickly get up and take a step further into the once locked room. I shine my torch looking for more exposed hands.
I find several tattooed hands before I take a step back and race out of there. I need to catch up to Roddrick and Kora. Once Kora is healthy enough, I need to ask her a whole lot of questions about what exactly happened in that building.
