The Month-Long "Write In"
#1
Andrew Knight
Andrew Knight8 years ago
A lot of places (bookstores, libraries) that get involved in NaNoWriMo host "write ins," or days when NaNo's get together at a time and location to write together in person. Well, considering the diversity of our community, I would like to dedicate this space to one big "write in" for the duration of November! The concept is simple: when you get on your computer to write for NaNo, hop on this thread and check in. If anyone else is on, everyone can strike up a little pow-wow and have a virtual write-in! Any and all discussions are welcome, and feedback/idea swapping is all but mandatory!

How do people feel about changing perspectives? Like I can't really tell the story I'm writing by sticking with First Person. I don't feel all too great by switching suddenly to Third Person for a chapter.

@Alef Magnus, oooh, first to third is almost always a disaster. Why can't you stay in first?
Alef Magnus

@Andrew Knight, I know I get irked by them as well when I read stuff like that but now I feel like I have to write it. The character in focus is generally making her way throughout the story while having to retrieve the memories she has forgotten. But at the same time, I want to also tell the story of other characters around her which can directly affect the movement of her story. Like there are things she doesn't know yet, and I want the readers to first know about it while the character herself is not aware of some information.

I don't know if that makes sense.

@Alef Magnus, that makes perfect sense, I was assuming that the purpose was to reveal new information that the character didn't know yet--that's the great advantage of third over first. I would suggest you discover a way to reveal the information without having the character witness it (i.e. news report, overhearing a conversation) but it sounds like your purpose is more geared toward the other characters who aren't the narrator... have you tried doing a third person chapter as a shift from the narrator's focus? I don't know how well that would work, but the shift wouldn't be permanent, just switching back and forth every time it suits your need. Is it possible for your audience to gain the info while the character is dreaming? Are out-of-body experiences out of the question? I think this problem requires some classic "outside the box" thinking

Alright, here goes **spoiler** (to whoever is reading Glory) hahaha

So the story is, the lead character recently received some sort of ritual to bring out a second personality out of her (this was supposed to be the reveal of the recent chapter) now I have to go and write the story of the one who did this ritual because the lead character will now appear as a different personality (that's supposed to be a reveal for this current chapter) but at the same time, I don;t want to give this ritual-giver a First person perspective. I want to keep my readers in the dark about his motivations. So I need to use Third Person on his story so we do not directly go in his mind.

So there. That's the issue. And I think it's alright to do the sudden shift? I'll just have to lessen the frequency.

I this case, I'd do the sudden shift and see how well it fits. There's no harm in going back and changing it later if it didn't quite work

@Andrew Knight, thanks man! Hope your story for NaNoWriMo is doing great

Andrew Knight8 years ago
@Alef Magnus, I don't know about great, but it's "doing" haha. I'm about to post the rest of Chapter 2, and then I'll continue on. I'm actually finding th writing itself fairly smooth, its just the sitting down and being motivated that's tricky

I sure am. I missed writing yesterday so I'm trying to get caught up today
Andrew Knight
Andrew Knight8 years ago
@Nicole Armas, Same! I think I may have written 3,000 so far, but I keep getting distracted. I'm like 5,000 behind my target for this date
Nicole Armas
Nicole Armas8 years ago
@Andrew Knight, I hope you can catch up! For me, distractions aren't really the problem, it's just not knowing where to go with my story. The age old writer's block has struck me again! Luckily  I've managed to shake it off for now.

I am too! I added a couple new characters and that gave me new energy for this chapter! Also my husband made shredded buffalo chicken tacos for dinner and that makes writing go so much easier with something GREAT for supper.
Nicole Armas

@Frances, I've added some new characters too. Adding new people and situations can keep a story going.
Also: Buffalo chicken tacos? That sounds amazing!

Nice! I'm contemplating dinner when I get home from work, I just got my elk back from the processor and elk tacos sound pretty good! Keep at it, everyone!

@Nicole Armas, You are rocking right along with your angels aren't you?? Good job!!!
And yes.....SO good. Just throw frozen chicken in the crockpot with buffalo sauce and whatever extra spices you want on high for three to four hours then shred it up with a fork. Then add the taco ingredients you like with a little bit of blue cheese sprinkled or a drizzle of ranch. AMAZING and super easy.

@Frances, Yes I am and thank you!
Sounds good! I love tacos so I'll have to try that sometime
Frances
Frances8 years ago
@Nicole Armas, you can do it with BBQ too and make pull pork or chicken sandwiches. I also like to put that on nachos too and have BBQ nachos.......
I really love my crockpot.....
Nicole Armas
Nicole Armas8 years ago
@Frances, That sounds really good.  XD My family really loves using crockpots too. They're great to use.
Frances

@Nicole Armas, I know! I love that I get dinner done in the middle of the afternoon and all I have to do is serve it and its a easy clean up afterwards when I'm tired and ready to crash.
Nicole Armas
Nicole Armas8 years ago
@Frances, Before crockpots were invented; it was the Dark Ages of cooking. XD
Frances
Frances8 years ago
@Nicole Armas, agreed. Though it is nice to cook the good old fashioned way too, I just don't have the time with my toddler running around and it makes me nervous having the stove or oven on and knives around. Its quick and easy and safe to just chop it all up and toss it in the crockpot, high and far away from her.

@Frances, That's true.
