Myra walks out of her dorm with her best friend and dorm mate, Sage. She's still processing last night. Crossing over was a bit of a stressful experience.
"You OK, My?" Sage asks. "You don't look like you got a lot of sleep."
"I'm OK," Myra says. "Just had a bad dream."
"Need some coffee?" Sage asks. "I can make my special recipe."
"I'd like that, thanks." Sage and Myra walk to the cafeteria, where all their friends are sitting at a table.
Scarlett is sitting and reading. She's a bookworm. She never really talks that much. She always puts her long, brown hair in a bun and she keeps her reading glasses on all the time, since she's always reading. Scarlett has a reputation for never speaking, but that's fine with her friends. She just needs someone there for her.
Kelly is fidgeting in her seat. She always acts like a woman on a sugar rush, because she has candy hidden in her dorm 24\7. She's saying hello to anyone who walks by and aggressively hugging all the girls. She would be making TikToks, but TikTok was banned from the school. Her blonde hair is messy and unbrushed. It's never brushed.
Celeste is meditating. She's always meditating. She refuses to eat until she's done meditating. Kelly looks like she's about to scare Celeste. When she tries to, Celeste doesn't budge. Her long, jet black hair flows down her back as she takes each breath.
Winnie is shoving food in her mouth, trying to nourish herself. She's always hungry. She has her short, blue hair in pigtails. Always the crazy person. She sees Sage and Myra and waves energetically, two churros stuffed in her mouth.
Phoebe is sucked to her phone. Her auburn hair is in a high ponytail, and she's making duck faces at her phone for Instagram photos. She's typing fast, her thumbs like lightning. Texting, tweeting, writing on her blog . . . nobody ever knows what she's doing.
Frankie isn't here. She's outside, practicing her dance steps. She's in a t-shirt and leggings, repeating her ballet steps. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, she repeats in her head. She repeats every turn, one by one.
Kassidy is cooking in the kitchen with her mom. She cares so much about cooking and her family. She's making special breakfasts for her friends, just to make sure they knew how much she appreciated them.
River had her legs curled up in a ball and her earplugs in her ears. She has her hood over her head, and her eyes on her phone. River doesn't say much. She's a bit of a mystery. She only speaks when she's taking care of her friends.
Lyric is singing, of course. She has her music sheets in front of her, and she was singing out loud for the entire school to hear. Her voice is beautiful. She sounds like a Disney Princess or Demi Lovato or Christina Aguilera. Her songwriting is as beautiful as her voice.
London is throwing things at the boys. Typical London. She gets hit in the face by one blonde boy, and she gasps. She grabs some of Winnie's mashed potatoes and chucks it at the boy. It hits him in the eyes.
Myra and Sage sit down. "Morning, all," Sage says. "Myra's in a mood."
"Oh shoot," London says, sitting down. "What's wrong with you?"
"Oh, nothing," Myra says. "Just a little shaken from a nightmare last night."
"Good morning, dearest besties," Kassidy says, arriving at the table. She sets down a plate of cookies on the table. "Breakfast is served!"
Winnie grabs four, then one more. She licks them all, to make sure her friends don't take them. Lyric scrunches up her nose at Winnie's disgusting behavior. Myra takes one and takes a small bite. She sets it down on her plate and sighs.
"Myra," River snaps. "Eat."
"I'm not hungry," Myra says.
"I said eat," River tells her, "so you better eat. I don't want you to starve, Myra."
"I won't starve."
"Eat," River says.
"River!" Celeste says gently. "There is a way we can say this kindly. Myra, please eat something. We all care for you so much. We don't want you to feel bad all day."
"Fine," Myra sighs. She eats the cookie like she's told. "I'm gonna take a walk before class." She gets up and walks out to the courtyard. She waves hi to all her teachers and puts on a fake smile.
"Myra, you can't tell anybody this happened," she remembers Philby saying. "If you let the OverTakers know you crossed over, they'll use you to hurt us. I don't wanna lose you, OK, sis?"
"OK," Myra had said. "I promise I won't tell anyone."
"I love you, Myra."
"Love you, too, Dell."
She misses her brother more than anything. She wants to see him again. She tells her teacher that she's sick and needs to go sleep.
She goes to her dorm and texts Philby.
