I live in a rather, different place. I live on an island called Bez Vozvrata, which means no return. It's a fitting name actually. This island is hope to one thousand people. It's like a tribe, a well mannered tribe. We only have one main law.
If you steal, you will 'go find more land.'
No one has ever returned.
I have a rough situation currently. My family is extremely poor, and we do not have enough food for everyone. I have been giving my food to my mother and little sister. I am growing hungry, very hungry. I have a very tough situation to make, either I steal food, or starve to death. I have been contemplating the thought of stealing for 5 days now. If I get caught, I'll be dead regardless. Either I have a watery grave, or I can die at home. . . . . I think I have now made a choice. I'm going to try and steal for my family. If I can't live, at least maybe they can.
There is an open bread market a few houses down. All I need to do is steal enough for my family, the plan in mind is I'll get the food to them before the police find me and, have me go and, well, die on the ocean.

I stuff my pencil and leather journal into my side bag and make my way to the little market. I try to steady my shaking hands and calm my heavy breaths as I near the market. No one seemed to be there, thankfully. There was only one boy, he was 2 years older than I, 18. He lived three houses down from my own, he wasn't one to call out on steeling, so I knew I could at least get the food to my family.
"Oh, hey Kas." He greets me. I found it odd how he was keeping his gaze down, his hands too looked like they were trembling in his pockets of his hoodie. "Hey. . Are you ok Niko?" He nodded and stepped closer to me. "I, I'm going to try and take this for my family." He whispered meekly in my ear, showing me a loaf of bread in his pockets. "I can, give some to your family if you, don't tell anyone."
I knew he was in a small family, orphaned, only his brother and himself was left. I looked up at him, understanding his situation.
"Nikolai, I won't tell another soul nor animal, your word is safe with me. . I too, am actually planning the same." I admit quietly. He looks at me in surprise, his eyes raising from the ground. I nod. "It's understandable." Another male voice says in a sigh. We both look over quickly to see a boy around our age leaning against a building, waring ripped jeans and a baggy black hoodie, some of his bangs from his puffy hair covering the top of his eyes.
"Who-who are you?" Nikolai asks, nervous. "Me? I'm Foster. And don't worry, I won't tell anybody about this. I have been taking from this place for a weak now, the food prices have risen way too much for low-borns like us huh?" He kept a hushed tone as he walked closer to us. He hands me a few loaves of bread. "Hide these, next time wear a bigger hoodie." I nod, surprised by how calm he was with all of this. "How.. are you so used to this?" Nikolai asks, his voice low and now trembling too. Foster shrugs. "I've been having to do this for a while, I have a family of seven, only one parent. The local food services aren't even givin' us enough money for enough food to last a week, what is it for a family of three for enough, 59 right?" I nod, assuming it was a question. "Mhm, and what do we get? 20. 20 for a family of seven." He snarls, his voice raising just a bit. "You, girl, what does your family get, how many?" "U-um, well, A family of 4, we get 40." Foster nods, his expression annoyed and looks over at Nikolai. "You?" "Well, It's just, me and my brother, without a legal guardian left, we don't get any money from food services." Foster scoffs and glares at the center of the street. A large statue of a king made of silver placed at the center.
"Greedy, all of em. Their excuse for my family is 'Oh, well, we don't have enough money, this town is really poor without workers.'" He speaks in a mocking tone. "Maybe they'd have enough money if they stopped indulging themselves in all their riches and expensive food and drink, and their useless amenities." He says, anger in his voice. I understood every word that he spoke, it was all true. I heard multiple centuries ago this land was peaceful, and shared their riches with everyone. It was a nice, caring society. Well, apparently when a different king took over, everything changed, people became poor, then homeless. 'Not enough money, we don't have enough, but If we did' they say. 'we would help you all.' Ha, yeah right.
"Well, you two better get back home." He says, looking at the crowds of people. I was about to thank him before I hear a loud booming voice. "FOSTER" "There he is!" I turn my head to see 3 officers pointing to us. "Welp, that's my cue, get home safely." He bows to us before jumping an alley fence and running into the darkness. "You two!" Nikolai and I look at each-other before understanding. They're after us now. "Run!" I take Nikolai's arm and start running to out homes. The officers stayed on our tails. I left out fence open for a reason. I drop the bread and toss a note top the loaves. the note read

Mom, dad, sissy, I'm sorry I got caught, guess I was never the best at getting away with things well, I hope you live a good life, And maybe it will be easier to get food without me. Well, don't mourn me, I will always be in your harts.
-Kassy
I smile as I go to walk out of the fence, feeling a hand wrap around mine. "Niko, what are you doing, you can go, run." He shook his head and smiled down at me. "Nah, it's fine. A rich family adopted my brother. He'll be better off." "Wait, so, that food was, for you? They didn't want you too? . ." He shakes his head, seeming to not be upset. "There they are!" There they were. Surrounding us.
'This is it." I thought. 'Well...I've lived a good life I suppose. . At least, I have someone to die with.' I was zoned out into my own cloudy reality of sadness, accepting my future of what's to come. I just, whish Nikolai didn't have to die too.
I don't remember much of the way to the shore. "Here we are." I come back form my clouded reality and look to the shore, seeing another officer there, with, him. Foster got caught. It looked like he was yelling at the officers, but, in a language I did not understand. We were shoved next to him, his yelling stopped when eh saw us.
"Well, damnit. . Sorry guys." He says, a saddened grin on his face. Nikolai kept quiet, looking at the ocean as I shook my head. "Don't be sorry, non of this is your fault girl, this was bound to happen for my deeds." We were silenced by an officer as he turned to the crowd.
"These three have been caught for stealing! Foster Harris is among them!" The voices yelled hate fueled words at him, even some of my own neighbors, oh how greed and point of view can damage peoples harts. I looked over to see Fosters expression. He just closed his eyes and smiled, I imagined he was making the yelling kind, and the words polite and happy. I watched as some of the commoners pushed a sailing boat onto the shallow of the water.
"For their deeds, they will be sent to search for new land! This time we will try the southern waters!" The officer announces as the others forcefully push us onto the boat. I noticed some food and drink, enough for two people. "Have fun out there." One officer grins as he pushes our boat off land. Foster yells one more foreign word loudly before smiling and seating himself.
"So. . . what now?" Nikolai asks quietly. "A watery grave?" He asks with a depressed chuckle.
"Hush with the negativity boy." Foster speaks up. "Well, he's right." I sigh, taking my seat. Foster chuckles before shaking his head.
"No, of coarse not." He says ceasing his laughter. "There is land, my grandpa told me when I was younger and he still walked the earth." I felt my eyes widen and my jaw drop and Nikolai has the same reaction. "But, no one has ever some back.."
He nods, sitting back. "He did. He just had to hide. The government didn't want anyone to find out there was actually more land. Where would their precious workers go? Then they would have to do things themselves and god forbid they do things for themselves. Hah, of coarse their is more land." "Are you, usually like this?.." Nikolai asks as Foster chuckles. "I wouldn't be me if I didn't. Now, we need to keep going south, look for dolphins, they will lead us to land. My eyes widened once more. "Dolphins, they exist?" I ask excitedly. Foster nods, smiling peacefully and closing his eyes. "I've heard of legends of dolphins, I didn't think they were real." Nikolai says awe-struck.
"Mhm, We just need to follow where they swim. If we do that, we'll find new land." I smile, looking down at the crystalline waters. I saw small creatures swimming below us. "Are those?..." I say, putting the tips of my fingers in the frigid water. "Fish? Yup. Real wild ones." Nikolai looks over the side of the boat next to me.
"They're so, pretty." He says, also reaching down to touch the water. "So um, Foster. How long did your grandpa say it took to reach the land?" "Three sunsets, if you follow the dolphins, as I have previously mentioned. People are always to scared of them, that's why they never found land. "Three days huh?" He says, reaching his hand deeper into the water. "That doesn't sound to bad." I comment. "Not bad at all."
There was a while of silence before I decided to break it. "So, Foster, do we have a plan once we get there?" He smiles and sits forward, his elbows resting on his legs. "In fact I do. My grandfather told me to befriend the canines. From there, water, we must build a shelter, get a fire, then day two, food." I looked at Nikolai confused as he shared the same confusion. "Canines?" He asks, confused as I was. "Canines are wolves. If you've ever heard horror stories from the town elders you'll know them." "Wolves...those bloodthirsty creatures?" He asks in a panicked tone. I have heard of wolves. They kill and murder everything.
Foster shakes his head. "They are not bloodthirsty. They only kill to feed their pups or if something threatens them. My grandfather befriended them. They are actually loving and loyal creatures." I didn't believe what he said, but everything else he said so far was true, so I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt. "We'll see.." Nikolai mumbles. "Well, it's gonna get dark soon, so let's get some sleep hmm?" I nod, as does Nikolai and we lay down together to stay warm through the night.
"Well, goodnight. Sleep well you two." Foster said before hiding in his hoodie. "Night. "Goodnight."
I thought my journey started when I was born. Apparently I was wrong, this moment right here is where my journey starts. With my bestfriend and a boy I just met. I look up at the stars and let out a calm breath before falling into a deep sleep.
