Thump thump thump thump
The music poured out of the open doors into the fairylight-lit lawn. It was getting close to midnight, and most of the partygoers were totally intoxicated. I wasn't, but I was one of few.
Thump thump thump thump
My friend wasn't too deep either. She and I were hanging out around the giant old oak in the middle of the yard. Rainbow colored strobe lights flashed out of the house, riding on the waves of music.
Thump thump thump thump
I spun my friend around and around, tapping my foot in time with the beat. A roll of thunder sounded overhead, but no one could hear the furious roar of nature. The music inside was too loud.
Thump thump thump thu-
Suddenly, the lights blinked out and the music cut off mid-beat. It was pitch black and I couldn't see a thing. A minute later the generator kicked on, but the music stayed off.
A scream shattered the unearthly silence.
I ran inside to see what had happened.
A body lay face down on the ground, tendrils of blood snaking towards my feet. My friend rushed down the hall. When she saw the corpse, she reached for my arm and clung to it like life itself.
”Who could do such a thing?” she whispered.
I shook my head. “I don’t know,” I replied in a low tone. “But I aim to find out.”
I shook her off of me, then knelt next to the body. I couldn’t see anything obvious on the back half, so I carefully rolled the carcass onto it’s back. 132Please respect copyright.PENANA8yfidS6ZYx

A red smile looked up at me.
”Someone slit their throat,” I whispered. “A silent kill.” 132Please respect copyright.PENANA1juhbxfhrj

Somewhere, the music turned back on.
Thump thump thump thump
Or maybe it was just my pounding heart. Either way, all I could hear was the pounding in my ears.
Thump thump thump thump
“Weapons weren’t allowed in the door, a security guard was hired to make sure. Someone either snuck in a knife or bribed the guard. It would probably only have been someone with a criminal record. The host performed background checks on any plus-ones, so they were all clean, except for one. Tara. My Tara. When the host saw she was a criminal, they said no. I told them that she got out for good behavior, so they let her in.” I took a deep breath. I was regretting that now.132Please respect copyright.PENANAdzOoBRLo1d

A shadow fell over me.
Thump thump thump thump
“Oh, darling.” I spun around. Tara looked over me, knife clutched in her steady hand. “My dear, you’ve learned far too much.”
Thump thump thump thump
Blood rushed down my chest. I gasped for breath.
There was no saving me now.
And suddenly -finally- the music ended.
