Laura's POV. 21Please respect copyright.PENANAzUuomHJZWj
Just as we were about to step into the café, someone called my name, that's weird, I hardly know anyone around here. "Laura" it came again, and the next minute, a lady clamped my shoulders and spun me around "Nora" I called out in surprise, she squealed, enveloping me in bear hug "what are you doing here?" I asked "we came for Norris's graduation from UNAM" she said looking behind me. "um, Nora meet Jasmine, and Jasmine this is Nora, my cousin" I introduced "hi" Jasmine said curtly "nice to meet you, you won't mind if I steal her away from you for a bit now, would you?" Jasmine's eyes darted between the two of us, before finally saying "no problem" "thanks" Nora squealed grabbing my hands "I'll be right back" I said and she nodded. "where are you dragging me to?" I asked trying to catch my breath. "I want to show you something" "slow down" I said turning back just in time to see Jasmine enter the cafe.
And now, on returning, I'm seeing Jasmine standing in the middle of the room, looking down and soaked. What happened? shouldn't she be seated? "hey, what's wrong, why are you here?" I asked and she looked up at me but didn't utter a word. "Jasmine? " I called again, this time she blinked, looking left, right, then back at my face. And before I could blink, she bolted and the next second, was in the street. Yup, she ran away.
Jasmine's POV.
"Doctor Martin, help!" I exclaimed pushing his door open. "I am so sorry sir, I tried to stop her" his secretary who followed me inside said gripping my arm. The middle aged man sitting behind the desk, wearing a lab coat with a stethoscope around his neck, gold rimmed glasses perched on his nose and his face buried a book, looked up, startled at the sudden disturbance. However, he did not seem surprised when he looked up and recognized the person who caused the fuss "it's fine, you can go" he said to her, I yanked my arm from her grip and stuck my tongue at her, ignoring her glare. "Long time no see, Lavender" Dr. Martin said after she closed the door "sorry for disturbing you sir" I apologized regaining my senses. "first, what are you doing in Mexico?" he asked then added "or is Karen here too?" I rolled my eyes inwardly at the last statement, almost forgetting that he is one of those men who seem blinded my mom's beauty and like her, refusing to see how much of a monster she can be.
Anyway, all that aside, I really need his help. "I um.. I reloca... no, I came too.. see someone" I stuttered trying to find a perfect lie, I mean, what I'm I supposed to say? that I turned a rebel and left home just to seek comfort in the house of my mom's greatest enemy, then got kidnapped along the line yadi yadi yadi and now, have mental problem? Jeez, that sounds like crap even to me.
He raised an eyebrow, like he didn't believe a word I said. "okay fine, what do you need my help for?" He said beckoning me to sit. "um.." I pondered not knowing where to start from "I think I might be going loco" my eyes widened realizing what I just said. "no, I mean I'm feeling a little unbalanced... mentally" I said carefully "okay" he said slowly "why did you come to that conclusion?" He continued, and I was confused, I mean, really, how did I come to that conclusion? "or perhaps, something happened?" that, I could answer, then I went on to narrate what happened at the cafe.
"and why do you think your reaction has anything to do with the possibility of you being mentally imbalanced?" he asked, taking off his glasses "I don't know, I guess I think it's so unlike me, I couldn't even say a word in my defence, I couldn't react. I mean, on a norms, I would've punched her in the face or something, but I couldn't, it was like my brain didn't want to or something" I said sounding a bit confused (a bit? who I'm I kidding, I sounded very confused) "well, I don't think it has to do with mental imbalance, it may be a slight case of Cataplexy" I irked my eyebrows "cat-a what now?" I asked with a frown " Cataplexy can cause muscle weakness in any part of the body, though cataplexy commonly affects the limbs (hands may drop whatever they're holding, knees may buckle, legs may collapse) and face (eyelids may droop, the jaw may go slack and speech become slurred, the head may nod), did you feel any of these symptoms?" He said examining me closely like I'm an experiment or something.
"you know what Doc, I'm sure it's not that serious, this is probably just a waste of time. It was nice talking to you" I said turning the door nob "has it tingled lately?" his voice stopped me in my tracks "has what tingled?" I asked turning around, he pointed to my forehead and I pursed my lips. Perfect time to be reminded how much of a weirdo I am "no" I said suddenly letting my guard up "are you sure?" "pretty much" I replied dryly "it may not be Cataplexy or any other weird condition, but it may be a reaction, from the crack" I winced, can't he find another word in the place of crack? "your body might be changing, the lines maybe exuding strange sensations, hence the weird feelings" he said sitting up straight "okay" I said slowly trying to let it sink in, so I don't eventually say something stupid "so what you're trying to say is that my inability to respond to the embarrassment I felt at the café was as a result of strange sensations caused by the lines surrounding my face?" I asked "Exactly".
"so, is there a cure for it?" that's the only thing I want, to cure it, I mean, what's life if you're unable to pack a punch cause you have a weird head (ha, weird head, see I can rhyme too) "for now it's only a speculation, seeing as your condition is rare and not scientifically proven, we might need to conduct series of tests" this man's giving me a migraine, is there a cure or not? "so, in short, there is no cure?" "not yet" then what am I still doing here? "I've really got to go now Doc, thanks for your help, I appreciate" I said opening the door. "Lavender if you could just wait to conduct the tests we..." he started "I can't hear you Doc, I'm too busy running away" I shouted overshadowing his voice. Back in his office Dr. Martin just sighed, shaking his head.
