What they don't tell you about Louisiana wetlands is that it smells like sulfur and rotten eggs. I wasn't expecting it to smell like cupcakes, but damn it reeks. The fan boat drifted down the bayou at a glacial pace. A swarm of insects buzzed in my ears. I tried to swat them away, but somehow they always seem to outmaneuver me. A mosquito landed on the back of my neck I slapped it, killing it instantly, but the damage was already done. I began itching profusely. That's the twelfth mosquito bite I've received in the past ten minutes. Ungrateful assholes! Don't they know I'm trying to save their habitat? I spend six years studying nature conservation and this is the thanks I get? I turn to my colleague, Eden, and declare, "This place is terrible! Who thought it was a good idea to come here?"
74Please respect copyright.PENANAmhpRYMUM61
She shot me a judgmental stare through her thick dark lashes. "Get used to it, Gavin. This is a thankless job. You volunteered for this, remember?"
74Please respect copyright.PENANANl09pzHWXy
I crossed my arms begrudgingly. "Yeah, you're right, but it still sucks though."

"This isn't a vacation, we're here to work." Eden pulled out a map and began pointing out areas where we needed to focus our restoration efforts."We need to make sure we're targeting the areas that are most at risk for erosion," she said, tracing her finger along the map. "We don't have unlimited resources, so we need to be strategic about where we place the sand."
74Please respect copyright.PENANAQA5MUrP4fW
"Can y'all remind me exactly what it is you're doing with all that sand you brought with you?" Rhett, our fan boat driver, asked. I'll be honest, I completely forgot he was here.

74Please respect copyright.PENANA7MzUGXJHua
"We're using sand made from recycled glass to restore the Ecosystem," Eden explained.
74Please respect copyright.PENANA9uXKX4dOKk
"Sounds painful to walk on," Rhett remarked.
74Please respect copyright.PENANAeoQpZZhmd1
"It's not meant to be walked on. It's meant to prevent the deposition of sediment in the wetland environment."
74Please respect copyright.PENANAWxahwHTC70
Rhett shrugged, clearly not understanding a word that came out of her mouth. He didn't need to understand. As long as he doesn't interfere with the project, everything will be fine.
74Please respect copyright.PENANAyEZfjzPNlN
As we approached the campsite I caught a glimpse of a weathered wanted poster of a woman, but the eyes had been scratched out, and the word MURDERER was scrawled across the top. I pointed it out to Rhett. "Who's that?"
74Please respect copyright.PENANAFVBaqIDnoY
Rhett waved his hand dismissively. "Oh, that's just Annie Grangerford. She's pretty famous around here. She stabbed our dear mayor 37 times with a machete." Rhett did the sign of the cross at the mention of the dearly departed mayor, then continued sailing without another word.
74Please respect copyright.PENANACdhoRY0DGj
"Should we be concerned about this Annie Grangerford?"
74Please respect copyright.PENANAOIXLMoEoAP
He chuckled. "You don't have anything to worry about, after fleeing from the scene of the murder, she was eaten to death by alligators. It was the most gruesome thing I ever did see."
74Please respect copyright.PENANAYCNOJQLiJ3
My eyes widened. "You watched her die?"
74Please respect copyright.PENANAiA73SSw8pm
"Well no, but I heard it was pure carnage."
74Please respect copyright.PENANAHr3Q9xbIMa
A shiver traveled down my spine. I had a bad feeling about this.
74Please respect copyright.PENANAxlsGmnaHgP
"Why do you keep her wanted poster up if she's dead?" Eden asked.
74Please respect copyright.PENANAWDytmKxiYA
"Because some folks claim they've seen her ghost floating above the swamp. I thought it would be a good idea to keep her picture up to warn people she's dangerous." Rhett frowned at the scratched-up poster. "It's such a shame what happened. Annie was always a little feisty, but I never thought she'd have the capacity to murder an innocent man."
74Please respect copyright.PENANAdfvluilStS
Eden's eyes lit up and she reapplied her black lipstick. "If you see a ghost, you have to tell me! Promise me, I'll be the first to know!"
74Please respect copyright.PENANAIkEiod1zhQ
I laughed, "Okay, okay. I promise if I see any ghosts, I'll tell you right away."
74Please respect copyright.PENANAAPv2yBRA5L
She shot me a satisfied smirk as we drifted down the bayou to our campsite. We pitched our tents and set up camp on the least swamp piece of land we could find. Eden and I sat on soggy logs and ate a delectable feast of cold canned vegetables. Once I'd finished my meal, I stretched and prepared to head back to my tent.
74Please respect copyright.PENANAkgmjLfhTOn
"Don't get too comfortable," Eden chided. "I have a job for you."
74Please respect copyright.PENANAMJIuCJrQ5r
"But it's almost sunset," I whined.
74Please respect copyright.PENANAQn4QEBRLOQ
"Then you'd better move swiftly. She handed me a collection of glass vials. "I need you to collect five different soil samples from the surrounding area."
74Please respect copyright.PENANAgVOItTgGhK
I let out a long overdramatic sigh. "Ugh, fine. Don't say I never do anything for you."
74Please respect copyright.PENANANqYqf7lkDA
I wandered into the bayou with a flashlight clutched tightly in my hands. The crickets chirped, and the frogs peeped a redundant tune that echoed throughout the wetlands. The ground beneath me was soft and moist like a sponge. It made a loud squelching sound with every step I took, alerting the entire swamp to my presence. Water seeped through my beat-up Converse, drenching my socks. Mom told me I should've brought galoshes. I wish I had listened, now I'll be experiencing that wet sock feeling indefinitely.
74Please respect copyright.PENANAPKaC3X3G7U
The swamp seemed to stretch on for an eternity. I surveyed my surroundings, trying to gauge if I'd been here before. All the trees looked exactly the same with their gnarled and twisted branches reaching out like skeletal fingers as if they were trying to snatch up anyone foolish enough to venture into their domain. A shiver traveled down my spine. I needed to stop scaring myself. There was no cell reception out here, so I had no way of asking Eden for help. I was on my own. I resolved to grab my last sample and try to retrace my steps back to camp. I knelt beside a bog and scooped up a sample of dirt from the coastline.
74Please respect copyright.PENANAPwBhI5xbRP
A tree branch snapped in the bayou behind me and a trio of spoonbills let out a hoarse trilling sound. The sound spooked me so bad it felt like my soul was going to eject from my body. I began to lose balance on the soggy ground. I tried to regain my footing, but the soil beneath me was too slippery. I plunged face-first into the murky waters. I kicked frantically, trying to keep myself afloat. I had no idea how deep the waters went. Thick, slimy, globs of algae clung to my skin as I tread water. Just as I began to catch my breath I heard a cacophony of angry hissing sounds surrounding me. An army of aquatic snakes glided through the surrounding waters, lunging at me with their fangs exposed. I screamed and doggie-paddled as fast as I could through the murky depths toward a nearby willow tree, standing tall in the center of the bog. As I frantically thrashed and kicked, I felt a set of fangs bury themselves into my skin. With one last surge of adrenaline, I managed to reach the willow's roots and climb onto a branch hanging above the water. I hugged onto the tree branch like my life depended on it. The snakes lunged out of the water, trying to take another bite out of me, but I was just out of their reach.

In the distance, I heard an ethereal voice singing the Southern blues. The enchanting melody slowly approached my treetop hiding spot. A part of me wanted to catch a glimpse of where the angelic voice was coming from, but common sense won over, and I chose to stay still and remain hidden.
74Please respect copyright.PENANAiLlEdnxRNj
The singing stopped abruptly, and I heard the voice call out. "Hello there, what are you doing in a tree?"
74Please respect copyright.PENANASk0J6ulQ9P
"Who, me?"
74Please respect copyright.PENANAPw2jnDJcJF
Her laughter reverberated across the swamp. "Well, I don't see anyone else hiding up a tree like a scared kitten."
74Please respect copyright.PENANAZh2w7Czglf
I forced out an awkward chuckle. "Hilarious. As you can see, there are a lot of snakes in the water, so I'm going to stay here until they go away if that's alright with you."
74Please respect copyright.PENANAVoRHNn230d
"In that case, you're going to be up there for a while, because you're in copperhead country, son."
74Please respect copyright.PENANAIN52jz7WnO
I glanced down wearily at the snake-infested waters. "I did not know that."
74Please respect copyright.PENANAKhuDGkfJfx
"You must not be from around here."
74Please respect copyright.PENANAMijzUUKgp5
"Just a stupid tourist," I confirmed.
74Please respect copyright.PENANAwRXAYy8IxQ
"Let me help you out." I heard the stranger step into the water followed by the sounds of hissing and slashing from down below. Once the noises stopped, she stepped onto the tree and extended out a pale hand to help me down. From this distance, I could finally see her face. I had only seen it once before, but I recognized it all the same.
74Please respect copyright.PENANA8sUhNa55gz
"You're Annie Grangerford!" I sputtered.
74Please respect copyright.PENANAUFvU5o6J48
She took a dramatic bow. "It appears my reputation proceeds me."
74Please respect copyright.PENANAsuQ9RLRBlK
She looked exactly like she did in her wanted poster apart from a few extra wrinkles on her smile lines and several grey streaks in her raven-brown hair. Despite being allegedly torn apart by alligators, she still had the same haunting beauty she'd had in her youth. I stared at her hand for a long time with my mouth hanging open in shock before tentatively reaching for it. To my surprise, her skin was warm and solid. I was half expecting my hand to phase right through her, but there didn't appear to be any spectral shenanigans going on here. "I thought you got torn apart by alligators," I thought aloud.
74Please respect copyright.PENANAgbYVwYBvCH
She winked at me. "The rumors of my passing were greatly exaggerated." She assisted me as I hopped down from the tree, and landed beside her on one of the willow's exposed roots.
74Please respect copyright.PENANAxnsmni8aYa
She waded into the water and beckoned for me to follow her. I anxiously stepped into the water and realized that it was only about three feet deep. Turns out I may have been overreacting earlier.
74Please respect copyright.PENANAYeyRJWpg1m
The snake's severed heads bobbed in the water like buoys. That explains why the hissing stopped so suddenly. I kept my gaze focused on Annie, desperately trying to ignore the decapitated snakes. I held my breath as I caught a glimpse of Annie Grangerford's signature machete. My heart began to palpate as I remembered she couldn't be trusted. She stabbed a man 37 times. I needed to keep my wits about me. Part of me was tempted to run away as fast as my legs would carry me into the bayou, but I feared what she might try to do to me if I ran. The best thing to do is due what she says, and maybe she won't stab me to death.

She led me deep into swampland to a rustic log cabin overgrown with moss. A warm cozy glow emanated from within the house. It would almost feel comforting under different circumstances. Annie kicked open the door and led me inside. She only had the bare essentials when it came to furniture. She owned a wooden stool, a table for one fashioned out of an old barrel, and rocking chair missing an armrest, and a twin-thsized bed draped with a moth-eaten quilt. "Rupert, I'm home," Annie called out.

Red Shouldered Hawk swooped down from the rafters and landed on her shoulder. He pulled out a dead rat from the front pocket of her olive green shirt and gobbled it up.

"Say Hello, Rupert. We have a guest."

Annie shot me a sympathetic look. "Poor thing, you're trembling." She wrapped a hand-stitched quilt around my shoulders and beckoned me toward the rocking chair by the fire.

I was far too scared to argue, so I sat down anxiously eyeing her machete.

"You look like you've got something on your mind," she said, trying to gauge my expression

"Do you always keep dead rats in your pockets"

She let out a loud cackle. She laughs at everything, doesn't she? That's good, maybe if she thinks I'm funny she'll let me live. "You see, Rupert was badly injured in a storm, which means he has a hard time hunting for himself. I bring home whatever I can find to help keep him nourished."
74Please respect copyright.PENANAC8jHM8kVq9
Rupert turned his head to the side head to the side, revealing a deep crack in his beak.
74Please respect copyright.PENANA5PCwpZS3tC
"That's nice of you."
74Please respect copyright.PENANAaVkz3Dckaa
"It's our duty to protect the innocent whenever we can, right?" She grabbed a ladle and began stirring the stew that had been simmering over the fire.
74Please respect copyright.PENANAkdcS9W3Bq3
The appetizing aroma of cumin, onions, and chili pepper drifted into my nose. "What's cooking in there?"
74Please respect copyright.PENANANVQZvfn9KB
"Snapping turtle gumbo. Want some?"
74Please respect copyright.PENANAvMWRIpshIP
She may seem nice, but I can't trust her. As much as I'd like to eat something, I shouldn't take the risk. The food could be poisoned for all I know. I shook my head. "No thank you. I already ate."

She gave an indifferent shrug and poured herself a bowl. She slurped up a spoonful and let out a satisfied hum.
74Please respect copyright.PENANAHj9k0txnWU
"It's a bit hypocritical, don't you think?" I mumbled to myself.
74Please respect copyright.PENANAKnaO6M0adZ
"What was that?" She spun around and shot me an appraising glare.
74Please respect copyright.PENANAsyCFr3pUZN
Crap! She heard me! My intuition told me that she'd be able to sense a lie, so I took a risk and spoke my mind. "I just think it's a bit hypocritical that you claim to protect the innocents when you cooked up that poor turtle, and also I hear you stabbed a man 37 times with a machete." I only mumbled that last part to avoid invoking her wrath.
74Please respect copyright.PENANAP6FEyCY8B8
"The turtle was far innocent, that sucker bit me." She rolled up her sleeve, revealing deep red bite marks, validating her claim. "So was the man." She didn't elaborate on the second point. She grabbed a first aid kit off the wall and knelt beside me. Let's take a look at that bite."
74Please respect copyright.PENANAdoJzooSQGD
Oh yeah, I'd been so distracted by everything going I completely I forgot about my snake bite.
74Please respect copyright.PENANAG8qPzQrUPO
"Don't fret, darling. Most of the snakes here aren't venomous."
74Please respect copyright.PENANAklaBdCX7CG
I grimaced at the words, most of.
74Please respect copyright.PENANAeahbxXzA3P
She studied the wound. "They're doesn't appear to be any venom, but I want to treat it, so it doesn't get infected. She dug through the first aid kit for an antiseptic solution. "I've just realized that I forgot to ask you your name. How rude of me."
74Please respect copyright.PENANAyd35tUKV81
"It's Gavin."
74Please respect copyright.PENANARoXwABJxKc
That's a lovely name," Annie remarked as she poured the antiseptic solution onto a cotton pad. "Where are you from, Gavin?" She asked, in an attempt to distract me from the sting.
74Please respect copyright.PENANASInd8TtBUt
"Baltimore," I winced as the stinging liquid made contact with my skin. "I lived there my whole life until going to college at North Carolina A&T. This is my first time in the wilderness, and I can't say I'm a fan."
74Please respect copyright.PENANAvWk4kQH8Kx
"I hear this place is an acquired taste for city folk like you."
74Please respect copyright.PENANANgB0eUVlM9
"I hope we can finish our work here before I have the chance to get used to it."
74Please respect copyright.PENANA7RrIzElGW4
Annie tore open a package containing a large water-resistant bandage. "What exactly are y'all are doing here? I know no one in their right mind would come to copperhead country for fun."
74Please respect copyright.PENANAdxVholk3Gw
"We're environmental scientists working on a project to restore the coast after erosion with sand made from New Orleans's recycled glass. Eventually, we hope to plant some native foliage to help revive the local ecosystems," I explained.
74Please respect copyright.PENANAbFCrW4PpcP
"That's a very noble cause."
74Please respect copyright.PENANAriiGfz30t7
"I don't feel noble. I just feel itchy and soggy."
74Please respect copyright.PENANAKp0CYYzwyr
"Heroes seldom do." She slapped on the bandage and smoothed out the edges. "Alright, you're free to go whenever you'd like. I don't mind if you want to stay by the fire a while longer. I get lonely out here all by myself."
74Please respect copyright.PENANA2wzpZzFeAc
I stood up to go, but then I suddenly remembered I have no idea where I am. I rubbed the back of my neck sheepishly. "Funny story, I don't remember where we set up camp."
74Please respect copyright.PENANADe9fB12WWv
"Don't worry. We have a map around here somewhere." She pulled out an old, musty suitcase from under the bed and began rummaging through it.
74Please respect copyright.PENANAmLYL7gx3yA
Rupert swooped down and grabbed a well-worn photograph in his beak.
74Please respect copyright.PENANAExg5PzJxHr
"Hey! Give that back!" Annie shouted, chasing him around the cabin.
74Please respect copyright.PENANA8YnCM0wheD
Rupert landed on the one remaining armrest of my chair. I snatched the photo out of his beak before he had time to react. I carefully examined the photo. It was a picture of two identical teenage girls sitting on a boat dock and eating freeze pops. They were using the same quilt I was wearing now as a picnic blanket. Under the image the words, Annie and Hester Grangerford, July 4th, 1987. were scrawled in black ink. I handed the picture back to Annie.
74Please respect copyright.PENANAKIylbSYmSf
74Please respect copyright.PENANApoHWi9bHL1
She carefully yanked it from my grasp and examined it for any tears. Once she ensured the photograph wasn't damaged, she let out a relieved sigh and hugged it close to her chest. "Sorry for overreacting. This is the only picture of the two of us I have. Hester always hated posing for pictures. "
74Please respect copyright.PENANAg1jHSooxJQ
"Is she your sister?"
74Please respect copyright.PENANAuSQiH1Mhyk
"Shewas my identical twin sister. I loved her more than life itself. A lump formed in her throat and tears pooled up in her eyes. She shook her head in an attempt to snap herself out of the memory. "I'm sorry, look at me, getting all emotional. You don't want to listen to me blubber."
74Please respect copyright.PENANApm5OW3DogH
"No it's okay, tell me about her."
74Please respect copyright.PENANAgEsPyp4Pm1
74Please respect copyright.PENANAWEDLRz3EUu
"Growing up, I was a wild child. I was always causing a ruckus. My dear Hester, she was as quiet as a church mouse. She never did nothing to nobody. She just wanted a peaceful, stable, life. She wanted to be a seamstress. She made that quilt your wearing right now." She pointed out some embroidered words in the top right corner of the quilt. Stitched with Love by Hester Grangerford. It read. "Hester and I never had much growing up, I didn't mind it too much, but Hester had a taste for the finer things in life. She wanted more than either of us could provide. That's why she ended up married to the mayor."
74Please respect copyright.PENANAchjwwgB1x7
Annie nodded. "At first, Hester thought it was like a Cinderella story, the richest man in town choosing her as his bride and whisking her off to his manor. I knew it was all too good to be true. I tried to warn her, but she accused me of being jealous. After they'd been married for six months he became controlling, he wouldn't let her leave his sight. He kept her all locked in that manor like a parakeet in a cage. Hester insisted he was doing it to protect her. I told her that his behavior wasn't healthy. After eavesdropping on our conversations he forbade me from stepping foot inside the manor. He claimed I was trying to 'sabotage their marriage.' Soon after he'd removed me from Hester's life he became verbally abusive, he resorted to screaming and name-calling over the tiniest of things. Eventually, Hester came to realize the kind of man he truly was. She showed up at my doorstep with a black eye and divorce papers in hand saying she was gonna leave him."
74Please respect copyright.PENANAKw3qr7D5cm
"Did she go through with the divorce?"
74Please respect copyright.PENANA705CTOJLiR
Annie shook her head solemnly. "She never got the chance to. The day after she handed him the divorce papers, they found her body floating in the swamp. They didn't have enough evidence to convict him of murder, so they wrote it off as a freak accident. The mayor covered his tracks too well, the case was closed. Every time I looked in the mirror I was haunted by Hester's face. I knew I needed to avenge my dear sister, so her spirit could finally know peace."
74Please respect copyright.PENANASz123RpVAk
"So, you stabbed the mayor?"
74Please respect copyright.PENANAs0wGjTypdF
"I showed him the same mercy he showed my sister. What goes around comes around and all that. Then I faked my death and came to live out here. I don't care if you judge me for what I did, I don't regret it one bit, but I do ask that you keep my existence out here a secret. Consider it a favor for saving you from the snakes."
74Please respect copyright.PENANAnoaQ8v2not
"I don't judge you at all. That guy was totally despicable, and he's probably better off dead. You have my silence. I promise I won't tell anyone you're here."
74Please respect copyright.PENANAw7LoWe7oBt
Annie gave me an appreciative smirk and unfurled a map of the swamp. "Can you tell me a little bit about your campsite?"
74Please respect copyright.PENANARTITUHYjBr
I tried my best to describe everything I could recall about the appearance and location of where we set up camp.
74Please respect copyright.PENANAXbeVXuhHCi
Annie nodded enthusiastically and circled a location on the map and drew a line leading me there. She handed me the map. "Rupert will help lead the way."
74Please respect copyright.PENANAak9PHwTtjv
"Thank you for everything."
74Please respect copyright.PENANA9FGa9ERA8H
She tipped her hat to me. "It was a pleasure to meet you, Gavin. If you ever find yourself in copperhead country again, you know where to find me."
74Please respect copyright.PENANAF868JrSXFp
We said our goodbyes and I followed Rupert into the bayou. I didn't even need to look at the map. Rupert expertly navigated through wetlands back the way I came. As we approached our destination, my eyes widened as I caught the glimpse of lanterns glimmering through the bushes. I stumbled through the brush, coming out on the edge of the campsite.
74Please respect copyright.PENANA6Tl37jhaav
Eden rushed over to check on me. She squeezed my shoulders so tight her fingernails left indents in my skin. "Gavin, where have you been? What the hell happened to you?"
74Please respect copyright.PENANAPCr9ayJFwD
"Eden, I saw a ghost."
