“It’s a new day…we better get searching,” Allister said with his gaze held up to the clouds.443Please respect copyright.PENANAtJDiJwpcWR
And with a simple whistle from Beibae, the small blue bird took off into the sky.443Please respect copyright.PENANAyi6LWf4Lgi
Allister couldn’t follow his friend into the sky so he travelled along the ash stained and steel tinted ground. It has always been hazardous travelling through large abandoned cities by foot but Allister didn’t mind dodging obstacles every now and then. When he was younger he’d slip and cut himself all the time. However, with the balance he has today it’s no longer a problem.
While leaping from one piece of broken concrete to the other Allister felt the blanket around his neck grow loose. He rested the off lantern on the ground beside him before tightening the knot that held it in place. Whilst fixing his ‘cape’ Allister heard the distant call of Beibae slowly sinking from the sky and toward the ground.443Please respect copyright.PENANAcNkv4on6EH
She’s found something.
“Oh, you found someone? Good job Beibae!” shouted Allister as he waved his paw back and forth to indicate that he had indeed heard her call.
He quickly picked up his lantern before joyfully skipping to where Beibae had landed. But, what they’d found was sadly not what they were hoping for.443Please respect copyright.PENANA8KkiN68gKl
They found a human. But they weren’t after just any old human. No, they were looking for healthy humans. The person they found was if anything, close to death.
“Oh, this is no good. They’re awfully sick, aren’t they Beibae? There’s no way to help them,” Allister sighed whilst looking down at the human.
The human had a piece of concrete on top of their right foot and it travelled up to their knee. This alone would have been an issue to deal with but their blackened fingers told of an even bigger problem. They were plagued, and there was no cure for this.
“They weren’t immune Beibae…”443Please respect copyright.PENANAU15KZrQSyL
Beibae tweets once, her voice much quieter than normal.
While Allister and Beibae talked to each another the human turned their dull and lifeless gaze up at the two animals. Their gaze said it all, they’d given up.443Please respect copyright.PENANAhPwVLlHACC
After Allister linked eyes with the human he knew it was time to say goodbye.
“Don’t want them to suffer no more, do we Beibae?” Allister asked.443Please respect copyright.PENANA0fgH9m0D5F
Beibae didn’t respond as Allister knelt down next to the dying human. He then pets their head once, twice, before wrapping his paws around their neck and waits for the breath to stop. It doesn’t take long for the human’s body fall limp within Allister’s grasp.443Please respect copyright.PENANASU1FYxmv2H
With one last mew goodbye Allister stands back up on his paws.443Please respect copyright.PENANAKdzMSN1ffT
To remember the human that was unable to fight against the disease Allister wanted to take something back with him that the human owned. Whilst searching around the human Allister found a necklace with a seashell attached to it. The shell was just out of the human’s reach. And judging by the marks left in the dust the human had attempted to reach it on various occasions.443Please respect copyright.PENANAyLKg0bR7km
After picking up the shell Allister turned it over to see SERA carved on the back of it. It was English so the lion couldn’t read what was written but he smiled nonetheless.
“You will not be forgotten, my fallen friend.”
And with that Allister placed the necklace around his neck and started his search once again.
