It was the next morning, and I was lacing up my boots. Then what do I hear? A knock at the door at six o'clock. Ugh. I looked through the peephole, and it was Killian Rhodes. Honestly, I just didn’t want to trust him, not now, not ever, but I had no choice. Give me a break.
I opened the door and gave him a fake smile. “Hi, Killian.” I said in a fake tone what was annoying even for me.
“Hey, uh, Mr. Winslow told me to pick you up. . . for the investigation for Val’s murder.”
“Right.” I said. “I’m just here lacing my boots and about to head out the door.”
“Well, may I come in?”
I nodded.
He walked into my house. I noticed from the corner of my eye that Killian was staring at the paintings of moons. He seemed to be intrigued. I never seen a man who actually liked moons. Unless he’s not human, but I know he’s human, so I guess.
I finished lacing up my boots, so we could get out of my house before I’d do something stupid.
“Okay, let’s go.” I told Killian.
“Wait,” he said to me.
“What?”
“You should put a coat on, it’s forty-six degrees outside.
“Killian, it’s September and I hardly ever wear coats during the fall time.”
He looked at me in disbelief.
“What now?” I sighed.
“Nothing.”
We walked out the door. And I saw that he drives a Mercedes Benz. Impressive.
“Is that your car?” I asked to double check.
“Yeah. You like?”
“I mean, I guess, but how?”
“Hard work, Maya. Hard work.”
“I’m only twenty-three, Killian.”
“And I’m twenty-nine. Again, I’ve been hustling for years. Ever since I was thirteen. So like I said, hard work.”
I was getting a little perturbed at Killian. I didn’t know why Harry had to hire Killian as my partner. Oh well.
Then his cellphone rang. I didn’t know who that was calling him, I could sense it’s a female though. As he was talking on the phone, I turned to the left and I saw a girl giving a blowjob to a man near an alley, from where I was. I wanted to tell them to stop, but I didn’t want to make a scene. Especially with Killian around. That would be a hell of a show.
He got off the phone, and I couldn’t hear anything he was saying, because of my distraction with the couple who loved foreplay in the alley. Then, Killian snapped his fingers to get my attention. It worked.
“What?”
“You all right?” Killian asked me.
I nodded. “Just daydreaming is all.” I looked at him. “What were you saying, again?”
“I said that was my fiance, Bonnie Almontez.”
“Bonnie Almontez. Isn’t she a stripper for Incubus Knights?”
He nodded. “She’s very good on the pole.” Killian winked at me and smiled, thinking that I would laugh at his stupid sexual innuendo.”
I scoffed and went inside his Mercedes Benz.
“I’m sorry, Maya.”
“It’s fine, Killian. Can we just go? I think we’re late already.”
“Oh shit, yeah. Let’s go.”
We arrived at Val’s house that was near the Bronx. We arrived at Val’s house that was near the Bronx. And I was hoping that there wasn’t a corpse inside the house. Since she lived near the daywalkers and the werewolves. They’d easily maul her to death.
So we opened the door and all I could smell was a week old corpse. Nasty. And I was praying that her body isn’t in anywhere around us, because if we accidentally step on the body, then we get fired. That was another rule for the Supernatural Bureau of Investigation that we had to follow.
“Damn, Maya, you smell that?” His face turned sour as if he ate a lemon by itself.
“Yeah, where is it coming from, though?”
“I don’t know, ” he said. “You check upstairs and I’ll check down here.”
I nodded.
As I checked upstairs to see where the corpse of Val could be. All I saw was a couple of bottles of red wine, either broken and or spilled, a TV with a snowy screen, and a bathtub full of blood. Please don’t tell me.
I had a feeling that I was getting close to the dead body because the smell was lingering in the air. Then I saw a blanket covering up a dead body. “Killian!” I yelled. “I found the body!”
He ran upstairs and found me. He grabbed his gun out of his gun holder, and pointed the gun at the body to make sure it wasn’t a trick.
So, I uncovered the blanket and the image of what I saw was horrific. It was obviously Val, but her body looked mutilated. Her skin was the color of pale blue-ish grey, arms and legs were torn out, even her throat. Her intestines were gutted and exposed, she had two punctured marks on her neck, seemed like a vampire wanted her blood first, and her eyes were popped out of her socket. This was a wicked death that scarred me for life.
I turned away from this gruesome scene because I knew I couldn’t handle it right now. I began to bawl my eyes out but didn’t want Killian to notice or be concerned about me.
“Are you crying, Maya?” Of course he asked me. He put his gun back into the holder.
“No,” I sniffed twice. “I’m not crying.” I lied.
“Really?” He asked in disbelief.
“It’s okay to cry, Maya, I know you were very close to Val.”
“How would you know, you just got hired.”
He nodded. “I know, but I also know what it’s like to lose someone.”
“Oh, really?” I was getting an attitude for no reason and totally uncalled for.
“Really. I lost my partner too. His name was Kevin Valentine. He was my wing man, my homie, my everything. He even hooked me and Bonnie up as well.”
“I’m sorry for your loss, Killian.” I was trying to be sincere, it worked to an extent.
But that’s why I decided to join the SBI because I needed a stronger partner who could keep up with the big boys. Ya know?”
“Yeah, same.” I said. “But I had no choice now, since I’m stuck with you.”
“I know that. I had to admit, what I heard three nights ago at Dead Girl’s Night Out, you really know how to kill a werewolf. I was really impressed.”
I sniffed again. “Thanks, Killian.”
“No problem. I’m gonna call the coroner to tell them to pick the body up, okay?”
I nodded again. “I’ll meet you in the car.”
“Sounds good.”
Killian maybe nice and all, but it would take a lot to gain my trust. Since I don’t know him about his life, but all I know is his stripper girlfriend, Bonnie and his partner, Kevin, from a rogue agency that’s SBI’s rival. And I have to admit, he’s not bad of a guy as I thought it would be. Let’s just see where this partnership could take us. No more than friends, of course, or I would get fired by Harry, but Bonnie as well. In my dreams.
