The third wave did not come until after midnight. Goblyn archers had taken the trees and set up encampments outside the city, making it extremely difficult for the Netherians to take back any ground. The archers on the wall were constantly ready, shooting at any scouts that came lurking underneath.
Their numbers increased in the darkest hours before dawn. Black arrows were fired up from the ground to thud into the wall beneath the precipice. Then three grotesque frog-like creatures slid out of the mist carrying bundles of wood in their mouths. The hide on their backs was thick and covered with warts and spikes, and their round fishy eyes stared expressionless at the archers on the walls. They slithered back into the darkness and were never seen again.
Suddenly lights flared from the Goblyn encampments and arrows of flame whizzed through the night. The slug monsters had carried wood soaked in oil, and now it burned with a fury that could not be matched.
Sam noticed a pale figure among the ranks of the Goblyns. It charged at the gate with incredible speed, and the arrows directed at it broke apart as if from striking an invisible wall. The red hair and the Wyvern dagger were enough to tell Sam that Astrid had returned, and with incredible power she shot a dozen spears of rock through the burning gate until it splintered and gave way under the relentless assault. Astrid disappeared into the fire after that and the Goblyn army stormed into the city.
